Consolidated Kansas

My son came home on an apnea monitor too - he was on his for 7 months and I remember the several nights the alarm went off! I look back at his baby pictures and almost all of them he has wires hanging out of the bottom of his shirts :) Those monitors are wonderful and life-saving for sure!

Lizzy are you sure that is a turtle dove?It looks like a ring neck dove to me. It could have come from someone's aviary or something. If it comes back to eat you will know for sure.
No, I am not sure that it is a turtle dove, but we have LOTS of them out here. After you put doubt in my mind, I went and looked into which kinds of doves are prevalent in Kansas. According to the KDWPT, the 4 most prevalent species of dove in Kansas are: mourning dove, Eurasian collared-dove, ringed turtle-dove, and white-winged dove. After looking at pictures, my guess would be that this dove was either a ringed turtle dove or a Eurasian collared dove. Both of those look incredibly similar to me. I've grown up calling them turtle doves. After looking at the pictures of the different species, though, I wonder how many times I've called a different bird a turtle dove. :) When we lived in Cheyenne, WY, I would call those doves turtle doves as well. Then, an avid bird watcher called me out on it and informed me that they were NOT turtle doves. The doves in Cheyenne were larger than the ones we see around here and didn't have the collar on their necks. They were still turtle doves to me, though. :)

Lizzy, that was a really pretty dove, I'm glad it was OK & got released again. I love hearing the calls they make.
I like hearing the calls they make as well, but the birds have a tendency to jump out from places when you least expect them too, especially when it's cold outside. I've been surprised by them many times...

So I found a little guy last night with a bloody backside. It looks like the others have decided to Peck at his backside continually. Little Bullies. So should I remove him from the coop and put him in a smaller cage until he heals? Is there a medication I should put on his bumm?

Segregating would be a good idea - they will continue to peck as long as he is there and the wound is visible. There is a product called Blu-Kote that is gentian violet based (so very messy if you get it on you and you will when you are using it) that you can spray on the wound. I've had good luck with it turning the wound from bloody red to blue/purple and the rest of the birds lose interest in pecking. I believe it also has some properties that will aid in healing. You can get it at almost any animal supply store - I would try Atwoods in Park City from where you are. Until you can get that, the chick will be better off in a segregated area where they can't continue to make it worse.

Ring neck doves aren't native. They come from Africa. I raised them for years. A turtle dove has markings on its wings where a ring neck dove has a soft even looking color. Look both up and you can see why I think so. Of course I couldn't see the whole dove in your picture.
We got some storms last night and it is cold today. I am really really tired of complaining about the weather. I'm starting to wonder if our entire weather system has shifted forward a couple months. The wind is blowing wildly which of course has the birds upset.
I think both of my old peach trees died this winter. It was so dry and they were really old trees but neither one of them are showing buds yet. They probably needed replaced but just the same I hate loosing trees of any kind. I had some vulunteer elm trees come up in my iris garden and am seriously thinking of leaving one of them. They are alive and thriving on their own so I can't complain. They just aren't where I would prefer them to be.
I really need to plant more trees but a little worried that our spring rain will be the end of it. I spent so much money on plants the last couple years that didn't thrive because of the heat regardless of all the watering I hate to waste more money.
I got tickled watching Marshmallow this morning. A group of gulls landed on a field east of us. One of them decided to fly into the yard. Marshmallow got all sorts of upset and chased the gull jumping in the air after it. It landed a distance away and she ran after it at full speed trying to chase it off again. This pursuit lasted a good 5 minutes cause the gull didn't want to go far enough to satisfy her. It finally landed in the field across the road and she was happy. But the whole group of gulls were still on our side of the road. They were just far enough out she didn't see them as a threat. One nice thing about having the gulls nearby the ducks ran for cover so I didn't have to chase them out of the ditches.. When it rains it's a never ending battle with them. Otherwise they are very good about staying where they belong. That running water is just too much excitement for them.
Jhammet I use blue kote or pine tar on these things. Both work well.

Are there any open wounds? You might treat any open sores with triple antibiotic ointment (without pain killer) before spraying with blu-kote (and that stuff is REALLY messy -- he he moves when you spray, you will be wearing the stuff for a while). These the 7 week olds? he/she won't like being alone, either. Is there a friend or two you could put with him?

The subject of doves also brings back a childhood memory. My mother referred to a bird that made a deep mellow sound as being a "Rain Crow". When she heard one, she said it would rain and it usually did. It wasn't until a few years ago that I actually saw a "Rain Crow". It was a Turtledove. It must have something to due with barometric pressure, for it to make the unusual sound than their normal cooing.

We have a special needs mourning dove that lives on our property. We call him Dummy. When he flies, he flies like he is drunk, stumbling as he flies. I will be driving down my driveway, and he insists on walking in front of my car, or flying two feet off the ground in front of it. Often times I need to stop the car until he figures out how to get out of the way. Many times I find him on top of my house making his mourning dove cries. I have no idea how he is able to fly that high, but he does make it. He is so much fun to watch. We watched him and his sibling (Dumber) grow up a couple summers ago. Unfortunately I believe his sibling has passed.

Never heard that Ralph. That is interesting. I'll have to keep my ears open.
I sold all of my doves, ringnecks and ivories, then just last month I sold all my diamond doves. I really love the sounds doves make but I wasn't doing much with them but feeding them and cleaning up after them. At least they hatched and fed their own offspring!!! It seems I have to raise about everything at least once. I had doves when I lived in OKC but they froze here in Kansas after I moved. I really enjoyed them then but had no other birds but cockatiels at the time. I used to trade my offspring for bird feed from a bird broker down there.
So I was ready to do it again but have way too many other birds to care for so they weren't as much fun now.
