Consolidated Kansas

I had to shut my computer down in a hurry yesterday. We had a big thunder and then the electricity went off and on. I decided to get as far away from the electronics as possible! My SIL has lost two computers and had phones blown off her wall due to lightning strikes to trees on her property.

I just came from the garden where my aunt and I put straw over the stuff that had come up already. My fingers and toes are numb. I read everything I missed (about 60 posts!) but I don't think I can type responses to it all. My chickens thought the cold weather yesterday was perfect for laying eggs; we got 5 from our 10 hens, which is a little better than the average.

Stay warm everyone!

A valve job at 65k,, sounds suspicious to me. I also had a trip planned for 2 weeks from now, was going to go watch my son graduate from basic, the weather has screwed that up for me.

The symptoms and the tests all point to it having a problem with one valve. This isn't the only mechanic that has told us that they think it has valve issues either... It's just now gotten bad enough that we really need to get it done or risk getting stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I'm sorry to hear that you won't get to see your son's graduation. Frustrating weather!!!

I lost two computers years ago from lightening strikes also, but that was when we had phone lines hooked up. Now we don't even have a home phone at all, just our cell phones. I did learn my lesson with those experiences though to unplug every time & we still do to this day just for safety. Computers are just too expensive to risk with lightening. We lost a lot of things that one year from the lightening, our well pump got zapped & our central heat & air as well & that was the year we had a horrible hail storm with it all too, we had lots of damage. That was when I was living outside of Derby.

I thought my chickens were crazy yesterday too, I got more eggs yesterday than I ever have in one day & it wasn't even a nice day. I'm dreading going out there again in a bit to feed all the birds & animals. I have only done the minimum today that I had to do, I just haven't wanted to be out there in that cold wind & it hasn't stopped all day. It is supposed to warm up some tomorrow though & a little more over the weekend.

Trish - I had 6 eggs today out of my 8 active layers! So I agree with the crazy.

On a sad note one of my original two hens died last night. She succumbed to whatever illness she had. The other hen that was acting odd is in quarantine and appears to be doing better so maybe whatever it is I caught in time with her.

On a happier note here is DD and DS playing with the newest Spice Girls. From left to right - Vanilla (Amerucana), Sage (Australorp), Clove (Amerucana).

OK first things first, I got some bluekote and treated the pecked up chick with out getting it on me... No blue freckles here. I also believe i have set the chicks up to learn to not roost in the nesting boxes. The pictures will explain what i did.

Little guy wasted no time jumping up to see what i was doing. I then removed the perch from in front of the nesting box so they couldn't do that. I reinstalled it above the existing roost ladder. Hoping they will go to the highest roost. when they do ill remove the ladder roost and add more single bars.

It's been awhile. I just have to say alot has gone on. My husband was hospitalized for 4 days and on our way home from that a sheriffs deputy shot and maimed my tom turkey Mr. Camo. There is a news segment on it at kctv 5 news for the whole story. I made a facebook page for him as well. A vet tried to save him but the damage was too great and we lost him today. The page is Mr. Camo, there is a press release also on there from the sheriffs dept that has alot of false accounts. I appreciate any support at this time, it is a huge mess.

not finding your facebook page... how about a link?

I'm so sorry Maidenwolf. I so hoped she could save him. You and the vet did the best you could. I think the sheriff's office is covering up for an incompetent deputy. Anyone who watched the news video can see those turkeys are not mean. I hope the sheriff's office becomes the laughing stock of the state!!! And I wish your neighbors all the misery they have caused you.
I went on a duck egg hunting adventure today. I had gathered the cayuga eggs a few days ago and couldn't figure out where they were laying. I finally after a long time did find about a half dozen so I know I am still missing a nest someplace. Anyway I got to following walking trails and found a duck eggs in the weeds, a couple nests in the mud, a huge nest in the loafing shed, another nest under a pallet etc. Now I need more room in the incubators. I can only assume that most of these are reasonably fresh.
Then my big egg buyer told DH last night (he just informed me) that he really wanted more duck eggs to eat. I took him 2 and half dozen last week. But I just mixed the eggs in buckets so I don't know which ones were the ones I was sure were fresh.
I've got a load of ducks in my basement already. And plenty more in the incubators. I love hatching ducks because it pays well.
Also DH told me he has a buyer for a rooster. Just needs a rooster. I have a buff orp I can sell him or some Swedish flower hen roos. I plan to take one of the exhibition orp roosters and put him with the normal buff hens in hoping to produce some bigger nicer birds.
I used the rest of the tylan today. That was a fast $50 when you treat as many birds as I have for preventative measures. I gave the last dose to the birds in the sick pen. I didn't find any of them showing any signs of still being sick today. This is their 5th day of treatment so that should be plenty.
I also hatched a couple more geese, some more ducks, and some more chicks today.
Hatching season is definitely in full swing.
I need a place to put birds for sure!!
