HeChicken, Maybe when you move those out you could replace them with a couple barrels laying on their sides. That way there would be cover, a place to lay and it would be safer for your birds.
Yeah, I had that thought today too. No new eggs appeared in the barrels today - maybe now their secret has been uncovered, they'll find somewhere else to hide some eggs.

Sharol I'm kind of thinking you are right. That was kind of along the same info I was getting from my brother in law when he said to get it without the pain killer. He also recommended neosporin (spelling) over the triple antibiotic stuff because it was safer to use. He is a pharmacist and certainly doesn't have anything to do with chickens but he used the information he had available to give me answers.
I always thought Neosporin is just the name brand for triple antibiotic?

Neosporin is one of the three antibiotics included in triple antibiotic ointment. The other two are bacitracin, and polymyxin sulphate. I am allergic to triple antibiotic ointment and the only thing I can use is bacitracin alone. That's the only reason I know the difference.
I found all those duck eggs yesterday and today I needed some to fill an order. The others were already incubator bound. I only found 6 eggs so I guess every duck on the place found a new spot.

Spent most of the afternoon working on the brooder. I took all the birds out and everything that was in there. DH is taking out the wood and the insulation on the walls. I am going to put metal strips along the baseboard to keep mice out. I don't think I'll reinsulate unless I can afford to cover it in heavy plastic panels. Since they cost about $30 for a 4 X 8 sheet that probably isn't going to happen. When it is all ripped out I am going to pressure wash the thing down and then oxine it. Then I will put some of these over crowded chicks out there. I have way too many birds in the house and it's time they went outside.

Hi all!
Shot in the dark here...Anyone know what the results of breeding a chocolate to a lavender would be? I'm still s-l-o-w-l-y learning genetics so take it easy on me, lol. I can find clear answers on B/B/S and C/B, but nothing so easy for other color combinations. Lavender is a self-blue, isn't it? Do the self colors cause problems when bred to other colors?

Sorry, just glimpsed the Neosporin thing and had to pipe up. Neosporin IS a brand name triple antibiotic. It contains Neomycin, Polymyxin B, and Bacitracin. Neomycin may be what you're thinking of, Verna.

Just to clear this up.....I think the previous posts were about two different things.

There is a method of sexing that involves looking at the wing feathers in day olds, and in some breeds that can determine gender. I didn't load the video because our connection sometimes makes looking at videos hard work, but I suspect that is what you were showing in the video.

However the previous discussion was simply about how fast males and females feather in respectively, which is a different thing than actual feather sexing. Some people have noticed that females feather in faster, particularly in the area between the shoulder blades, and the tail. I too have noticed that it is often the case that the pullets feather in faster. However there are always exceptions so you can't use the fast feathering to be 100% sure - I've been surprised several times by a slow feathering pullet or a fast feathering cockerel.

I agree HEChicken, you can have different rates of feathering in either sex. Even the tail feathers can fool you sometimes. The pullets usually get tail feathers first but not always. The feathering varies from breed to breed too.

Anyone in the Topeka area who would be interested in helping rehome some family pets.... Our chickens.... Please private message me. I promised the kids I would find homes for them that they would be loved and enjoyed for their personalities as much as we have enjoyed them. Our neighbors have been very hateful. Encouraging their children to be hateful, as if a back yard flock is "white trash" versus being ecologically sound, as well as very enjoyable as pets. We cant handle vandalism to the house or yard in spite... My children don't need, and can't handle, anything else to damage their self esteem. They already get teased for being Asian and not looking like me, not being wanted in China, for facial differences... They need to be able to ride the bus without adding one more thing to be teased about to the list:-(
