It's been awhile. I just have to say alot has gone on. My husband was hospitalized for 4 days and on our way home from that a sheriffs deputy shot and maimed my tom turkey Mr. Camo. There is a news segment on it at kctv 5 news for the whole story. I made a facebook page for him as well. A vet tried to save him but the damage was too great and we lost him today. The page is Mr. Camo, there is a press release also on there from the sheriffs dept that has alot of false accounts. I appreciate any support at this time, it is a huge mess.
I'm so sorry. Even if Mr. Camo had been aggressive, what a ridiculous response by the deputy. To leave Mr. Camo wounded and in pain, and not even notify you about what had happened and why, is both cruel and unprofessional.
Maidenwolf, so sorry about Mr. Camo - what an awful event to have to go through. RIP.
Danz, glad your birds are doing better. I know what you mean about finding duck eggs everywhere. My burn barrel saga continues. I didn't even check it yesterday because I was so sure my chocolate duck, who is now brooding in the hoop coop, was responsible for the eggs she was sitting on. Today I gave a quick peek behind my horse shelter and saw what looked like a piece of trash up against the fence. I walked back there and actually jumped when I looked in the barrel and saw one of my black muscovies looking up at me. Good grief girls - what's up? Only a few days ago they were ALL laying in the nest boxes in the coop. Then I noticed that she had thrown out all that broken glass - it was all behind the barrel. So glad she didn't cut herself up doing it. Later I went back and checked and there were two eggs in it - one completely gray from ash. Then on a whim I checked the other burn barrel that is nearby and there was another duck egg in there. So I guess I have to check those barrels every day now too, while I'm collecting eggs.
I had my camera with me and was able to get some better pics than I did yesterday. Here is the barrel, now in focus. If you look through one of the holes, you can see one of the eggs. The other barrel is back behind it and is apparently a "nest" as well.
I cleaned of the ashy egg and we ate it in tonight's supper. I know it wasn't that old since I emptied the barrel two nights ago when I moved the chocolate, but I didn't want to incubate it like this and didn't want to wash and then try to incubate it.
Here is the broken glass thrown out by the duck.
Well, it certainly doesn't look like anywhere I'd want to lay an egg ...![]()

Yep, I need to get on that. I've hated those things since we moved in and wanted to move them but its very tight back where they are and they are so rusted, I'm afraid picking them up won't be easy - they'll probably just fall apart. Until now I didn't mind them being there so much because they provided cover for the birds to hide from predators (when the fox attacked the second day, all of the survivors were back there, hiding behind those barrels). So as long as they weren't visible from the house, it didn't seem like there was any harm in leaving them there. It never occurred to me they'd think they were good nesting sites. Crazy birds.HEChicken, you have some determined ducks. I think I would be making haste to get rid of those barrels so they can't use them any more. I can't believe that hen moved all the glass either, that's crazy!
Sharol, why do you recommend the one without pain killer? When I bought some recently I didn't know which to get an in the end got the one with the pain killer because it was to treat a bird following bumblefoot surgery and I figured she'd be in a degree of pain. It sounds like maybe that was the wrong decision?
yep.. there are 2 of these video's.. theywere pretty interesting.. . they show day olds at hatchery and how. their eggsperts do it..Overall, I've found hens to develop both wing and tail feathers faster than cockerels. There are exceptions to every rule and there is always the one that surprises me still but in general....
