Consolidated Kansas

It's been rotten and stressful to say the least. Thank you all for the support. The sheriff has called my DH and wants him to come by the station monday night to have a man to man talk about things. Our news cast has reached tennessee and is blowing up bigger than I ever thought. People are outraged to learn that this happened and the sheriffs response was to simply saw that the seputy acted as he should have, which in alot of peoples opinion was incorrect. Leaving an animal to suffer is not protocol in any way. So hopefully to dave face he wants to give us what we ask for which all we want is a formal apology from the sheriff for trying to smear our name in the mud and a personal apology from the deputy for shooting our pet and making him suffer. Well we will see on monday though.

My phoenix is on alot of eggs. Every morning she gets off to eat and drink and someone pops on to lay an egg and she waits patiently to get back on her nest. she is covering all the eggs as of now and I know there are more than 20 eggs under her. Should I leave her to them all?
Maidenwolf, I'm glad this is getting coverage so maybe the dept will be more careful in the future.

If you can segregate the Phoenix that would be best. If the others keep laying in her nest, it will be a really staggered hatch and once a few of her babies have hatched she will abandon the nest and the rest of them will die. If you can segregate her, she will be able to focus on incubating whatever eggs are in the nest at the time.
Chicken Danz, thank you for the reply. The top one, silver, has the cleanest legs of them all with a bluish cast, and is the smallest and leanest. The fuzziest is Gold, who looks to have feathers all over the legs and is a little chunk. I'm not sure about a ruff. I've tried to do some research and I do think at least three are Cochin. Cumulo might be a barred rock? It has clean legs, too.

I have been wrapping them gently in a tea towel and lying them on my chest. They zonk out in seconds and sleep for about 15 minutes like that. They seem to really like the heart beat, and I could be completely wishful thinking, but when I let them sleep like that they seem to grow like crazy and are very relaxed afterwards. They also like a freeze dried blood worm treat (fish food) now and then, and it is fun to see them get to act like real chickens. They are about the size of parakeets right now.
Welcome to chicken addiction

I think it should spread further and wider. Lets let the world see what an injustice it is!!!
I would let her set. Pheonix do an excellent job of incubating and being broody. Wait until she hatches some and leaves the nest then you can candle the others and hatch them yourself like I did last year.
Thank you Danz. It amazes me how far it as gotten in such a hort period of time. I want the fire to build under that sheriff's butt with the support of all the other people that realize the truth.
She is doing great so far and she is very patient in waiting for her nest to open back up and not just abandoning it. She will often kick a hen out if it is an underling. Very dedicated. She did kick a couple of eggs out of the nest yesterday so maybe she will self manage. I am excited, I wanted a broody the kids are loving watching her and seeing how such a small bird can spread out so flat and wide. I cant wait for them to see how she interacts with her babies, I loved seeing it as a kid. So she is my little sunshine amongst the rain of tears....

I've had chickens for over 10 years and never experienced anything like this. Last year we bought new chicks from Orschelns and ended up losing a bunch of them. Something was going in at night and taking them out and popping their heads off and eating their insides.

I think I would have freaked out the first time I saw something like that. Maybe EVERY time I saw something like that. How awful.

My Salmon hen is healing up nicely. She rewarded me with the good care and larger living quarter by giving me an egg.

I haven't seen an egg from her since she was hurt at least 3 weeks ago. I'm hoping she will be able to rejoin her flockmates soon.

That's good news.

Those are some adorable chicks. No chicks for me this year, so I just have to enjoy seeing everyone else's.

I was so foggy brained this morning from being tired I forgot to tell you all about my encounter last night. I went to Wichita to run to Sam's & do some shopping & then didn't get back down to Derby to stop at Walmart until about 9:00 last night. I just stopped there instead of coming all the way back here & then having to drive into town. Anyway, I was turning onto the street that goes to Walmart & just got barely around the corner when I saw something in the street in front of me. At first I thought it was a small dog, but as I got closer & had to slow down I saw that it actually was a red fox.

We have foxes in town. Apparently, they're very good at adapting to town life. They've been around for years here, though not in my neighborhood. I think there are too many dogs and cats. DH is pretty sure they couldn't get in our pen even if they did decide to brave all the barking and whatnot, but you never know.

I have this from the cochin websites. Look like May 4th for Hutch. Consolidated KS meetup anyone?

Gah! That would nice and close for me, but my nephew is having his open house for graduation that day, even though graduation is the next week. And I have to make and decorate the cake.

It would be nice if he apologizes to you personally, then makes a public statement, but that would probably be too much to ask. I'm glad the news cast has gotten such widespread attention. Maybe next time the deputy will think before he acts. I can't imagine anyone defending the way he left that poor thing to suffer and didn't even notify you that anything had happened.

Danz, the egret is pretty. I'm glad you were able to get pictures.

HEchicken, maybe I could market them as Shar Pei eggs?

We don't sell our eggs except to DH's parents. We may sell some to the neighbors; they asked about it recently. We don't have enough hens to really try to sell eggs, especially when the laying drops off periodically.

I still didn't get a picture of Ruby. We're just curious about her. We can't breed or anything like that, so we don't really care what breeds our hens are.

Cherwill- it would be nice, and that is what I am pushing for since they publicly announced our name and address and other personal and untrue things. I have not released the name of the deputy and am going to sit on that info for leverage.

Yea I hope if nothing else the deputy learns how hurtful his actions were and how hard it is to explain to an year old that a member of law enforcement (which they are supposed to trust to protect) has done this horrible thing to her pet.
I didnt think about the staggered hatch thing. Is it safe to move her or should I section her off? Sorry this is my first ever broody

I've had success moving them and I've had some that refused to be moved - they are individuals like that. One of my broody ducks right now was not happy about being moved so I left her where she chose to brood, and put a little run that is about 2x4, made of 1x2's and chicken wire, over the top of her. At 4' long there is room for food and water bowls at the opposite end from where her nest is, so she has to get up to eat and drink. That is working okay, although I'll be glad when I don't have to work around her any more. The other broody duck wasn't actually even broody yet - she was just working up to it. I moved her to the hoop coop and put a few eggs in there and wham - next morning she was sitting on those eggs. Most chickens I've been able to move to my hoop coop and set them up with an area to brood. I've found it's best to move them at night when they're sleepy. Usually when I move them I don't want to risk any eggs that are already developing, so I put in eggs that I know are infertile, or even hard-boiled eggs, just to see if she'll accept the move. Once she is sitting in the new place, I'll trade out the "fake" eggs for the ones I actually want her to hatch. But I've also had two hens that were confirmed broody for several days in the nest boxes in the coop, but after I moved them to the hoop coop they lost interest in brooding. Everything I know about broody chickens tells me at some point in the near future they'll try again but so far its been a couple of weeks and neither of them has shown the slightest interest ever since (but neither has resumed laying yet either).

Hi everyone! Newbie over here from Topeka. I started out with six little chicks a few weeks ago, then went to Orschlen's to get some food for them yesterday and came home with two more :) Hoping to learn some chicken wisdom from you guys!

Our original six that will be 4 weeks old are three buff orpingtons, (Chickadee, Marilyn, & Eleanor,) and 3 black sex links, (Pepper, Sassafrass, & Maggie.) Then yesterday I picked up both a 4 day old silver laced wyandotte, (Sybil,) and a barred plymouth rock, (Edith.)
I've been taking far too many pictures of them already. I'll upload some tomorrow of them! They've been having a blast spending time outside everyday while I build their coop.

Thanks Frizzled for the info, I'll pass that along to our regional director.

Welcome, we're always glad to see new people & new ones getting into chickens. I love your chick's names by the way.

I need to get a good picture of Ruby so you all can tell me what she is. We'd ended up with a stray BO and to keep her company, bought Ruby out of an unmarked bin, just odds and ends left over at Orscheln that fall. We, and the cashier, flipped through the charts of chicks trying to identify her breed just to satisfy our curiosity. The cashier told us which breeds they'd had in for fall and, as a chick, she looked just like the silver-laced wyandottes. As an adult, I've never been quite sure. I think she doesn't have that pronounced a lace pattern, but she doesn't look like the barred rocks, either, and besides, they didn't have those in the fall.

I have a bird laying funky eggs lately, and the shells are thinner than our other eggs. She lays almost daily, but their shells are uneven and often wrinkled looking in places. This is the most wrinkly one yet. I couldn't manage to get a clearer picture at such close range.

Have you tried adding oyster shell to the feed or providing oyster shell in a separate feeder?
