HEChicken-- Goodness what a special little poult. I hope he is doing ok (hope I didnt miss an important post about it) This rain- yes we need it- but goodness settle down already. I have much to do but the rain keeps holding me back. Luckily my coop is nice and dry and the grow out shelter too. When we move to a new place ( hoping soon---send prayers lol) I will have learned that I need to post my coop onTOP of the hill and not at the bottom. There are no trees at the top and wanted the coop near a tree.. So far no flooding of the coop though. Anyway- I am glad you got everyone in a dry location. I am building a fenced area for my phoenix today. She will get off nest when she sees me open the coop in the morning as long as I am still standing there and she runs over to me and looks up and talks to me and takes off to eat, its like she is asking me to watch her nest, how can I say no... So the building will continue in the rain so she can be more comfortable.

Frizzle-- Those chicks are adorable. Love the cochins

Here are a few newer pics. I havent posted in awhile so first off--

I lost my connection so I lost my multis. I'm going to have to try to remember what everyone wrote.
Welcome Thepinkcoop! Join in. Do you really have a pink coop?
Hechicken I do mark my eggs with the date they go into the hatcher. The problem was I was marking chicken eggs, turkey eggs, guinea eggs, pheasant eggs, and duck eggs all the same time. Needless to say I got a chicken date on a couple of duck eggs. I usually set several trays at a time and it gets confusing some times. For as lousy as my hatches have been going lately I guess it hasn't mattered that much. I have totally lost my touch.
I have the hatcher empty and ready to load for hatches today. I am just watching humidity right now to see how it does. I opened up some air ports and lost humidity in the process so I am trying to peak it back up there some.
I don't know what the rest of you are getting but we had driving rain all night. And it is still raining and blowing like wild. It's sitting right at 33 degrees right now so at least we aren't getting snow. If this was all snow we'd have 15 inches of the stuff and blizzard conditions. Looks like just to the west of us it is snowing.
I was gone for the afternoon yesterday I delivered some birds on the way to Emporia and at Emporia. Then I went to Walmart and spent a fortune. Then to Bluestem and spent another $100 on some starter feed and dog food. I am sure glad I don't have to buy all my feed in bags. Ouch!!! I was going to buy some lumber to start my hoop coop but decided to wait. DH is going to go to Ottawa to pick up some kennel panels later so I will just get my lumber then. I noticed that Sutherlands is having a 20% off sale so I guess I could wait until Saturday and save even more. I really want to get busy on this next hoop coop though.
I have been burning through some major money lately that I don't have to spare. I hope before long though I get things settled and get my breeding groups figured out.
Last I saw our little area here was still in extreme. It's only a small section here in the middle of no where in east central Kansas. 40 miles in all directions things have improved. However we have gotten some moisture lately and this rain last night and this morning should help. The problem is here it is all clay and runs straight to the creeks. It just sits on top of the ground until it runs off or evaporates. I hate it.
I have some indoor projects to complete today so I'm afraid the birds aren't going to get a lot of attention outside. I hope they are all okay in this weather. Most of them are holed up in their coops....except the ducks who are out playing in the ditches ....on the other side of the road. Come on fencing guy!!!! Hurry up!
Thanks for the heads up! I need to pick up a few pieces of plywood to finish my coop.

I took the poult to the coop this morning and put it under Mama Hen again. I went down to check an hour or so ago and couldn't see or hear it so

it is okay. I didn't want to lift her off and disturb things as long as they seem to be going okay. Her 3 chicks were out eating and one of the other poults came out but I didn't see it eat. They are all still within the 72 hour mark of hatching so don't HAVE to eat yet. I sure would like to see them do it though.

I hate to be the one to tell you....well, let me back up. I grew up in Australia where the languages taught in schools are relevant to our geographic region - Japanese, Chinese and Indonesian are most common. The school I went to taught only Japanese so that is what I learned. I later went to Japan as an exchange student and majored in the language in college, so am reasonably fluent. Uki does not mean white or snow....I think you were looking for Yuki (which is snow). The word for white is Shiroi and coincidentally, that is the name of our cat, who is pure white, so you and I were thinking along the same lines. I am terrible at naming pets but faced with a white cat, I didn't want to do something obvious like "Whitey" or "Snowball" and finally one of the kids asked me "What's the word for "white" in Japanese?" and when I told them, they liked it and that has been his name ever since. So I guess we did name him "Whitey" after all.

The word "Uki" actually means "threatening to rain" or "rainy season".

I LOVE all of their colors!! So pretty!
Frizzle, your chicks are pretty great, too!

DD1's birthday is this Saturday and a friend of mine who keeps chickens wants to get her her own chick for her birthday. I've more or less said yes to her, but DH doesn't know yet :) Am I understanding this right- would that be considered chicken math, too?

On Sunday I built a raised bed, but luckily ran out of time to get anything in. We got less than an inch of snow here in Topeka, and I'm so happy for it! I did get some raspberries planted on Sunday, hoping they make it!

Good morning everyone. I love this Ks forum. I live in the high desert in CA with my husband and we have chickens. KS is our second home you might say becuase my husband was born and raised in KS and taught school there before coming to CA where he met me. We go back to KS every year as hubby has family there. His sister is 95 and lives in KC but he was born in Paola and has children in Emporia, Wichita and Newton. Just wanted to say "Hi". I had a double surprise yesterday, a bull snake on the back step and one in the chicken coop. The chickens don't get upset with them and they do keep the mice down. They get quite big, both were about 4 feet long, but their heads are very small and in all the time we've lived here none of my chickens have been hurt. My rooster, a silkie/maran, doesn't bother them. So far I haven't seen a sidwinder or a Mojave Green our two venemous rattlers. I have nine big hens with roo and a polish and five bantams in the other pen. The Polish, Tilly, belonged to a friend that needed to let her go and she still lays eggs several times a week and she's seven years old.

Maidenwolf I have 5 more little d'ulansk pullets. I put them in with the d'uccle to see if I could do some more of a breeding project on them. I think I could fairly easily create a whole new color in the d'uccle with them. Of course none of them are old enough to lay yet. I may eventually just donate them to you after I'm done playing with genetics. They seem stronger than the Olandsk chicks and the d'uccle chicks and they are just as cute as buttons.
Frizzle I meant to mention your chicks as well. They are really pretty. How are the orpingtons doing?
Baustin glad you could join us. Your husband came from around my stomping area. I live slightly South and halfway between Ottawa and Emporia. I am sure he will be familiar with the area.
Snakes will eat eggs so be sure you get them gathered quickly. I would just as soon they stayed away. I don't care to run into surprises while I'm out caring for the birds. That's just my take. If they would eat mice around here I'd totally welcome them but instead they tend to prefer eggs they don't have to chase.

Some new additions...

Swedish flower hen babies (Trish's grandchicks), front chick is week older -smaller one in back is crested--yeah!

What pretty birds. I sure wish I had room for some chicks again!
With the first two poults, I tried keeping them warm on my chest and their little nails were scratching me up badly. This one was so still there was no issue with it. By this morning it was determined to climb out of there and up as high as it could get. It got to my shoulder and pushed up into my ponytail and then went to sleep. I guess that was as close as it could find to snuggling under a Mama

LOL! My chicks would do that, too, crawl up my neck and try to snuggle under my hair. It can be a bit of a mess trying to get them out again.

How pretty. Especially Saturn.

Sad news from my niece's family. One of their two ducks was killed, probably Sunday night. Looks like it was a fox (remember me just talking about foxes in town?!). Yesterday morning my SIL found two piles of feathers in the neighbor's yard and Doug was nowhere to be found. Stan was huddled in the duck house, quacking and traumatized. I'm not sure why or how Doug was out in the evening because they usually lock the ducks in at night. They've already ordered more so Stan won't be alone. The minimum order is 3 and for some reason my brother is adamant that they have no more than 3 ducks total. I have no idea what they plan to do with the leftover duck. Hopefully they'll end up keeping them all. Four ducks are no harder to take care of than 2 or 3.

Yes there is supposed to be a "Y" there. -- Ugh hate updating from my phone.. My sister has studied japanese for years and can speak it quiet well. She named him because of his white color when he was a chick. I am so glad the poult is back with momma. Hope it all goes well and the rain settle down a bit.

Cherwill- sorry to hear about the duck.

There are only a few varieties of snake that will eat eggs - most won't touch them. I don't know if Bull Snakes are among those that do.

Awwww....that's so sad. I hope they can keep all 4 - I agree it is just as easy to care for 4 as 3.
