Consolidated Kansas

I was actually in St. Mary's hospital. I doubt if you even remember St. Mary's. I don't know how many years it's been since they closed it down. I had just had major surgery the day before and was totally unable to move by myself. They released every patient in the hospital except for the critical ones. I had to stay. I remember they lost power and water and they pushed my bed out into the hallway. That was back in the days when they opened windows for a tornado. They were preparing for a major amount of injuries to come in.
I guess the main thing with me was that I was unable to move on my own and I had no way to escape unless someone moved me. I couldn't even roll over alone so they had to do that every few hours. I was on the third floor and of course there were no elevators available. Since I couldn't walk I kept thinking they might just desert me and leave me to blow away. It was pretty frightening at the time. I do remember the noise and the pressure changes so vividly.
I also remember the one in the early 90's. I lived in Council Grove then. We came to Emporia and looked at all the destruction.
Well DH got home and got the tractor out. He didn't act too mad. Come to find out this wasn't a huge slab of concrete after all. It's a huge rock. I told him people would pay good money for that for a landscape feature and he broke it in half. He said I could still walk out and stand on it and drink a cup of coffee.

Good to see you Chooks.
I managed to loose my glasses today too. I sat them down somewhere so they wouldn't get in my way and can't find them. I am pretty sure they were outside some place. I swear this was one of those days I should have just stayed in bed.

Don't feel bad, about a week ago I was out mowing & came around a corner & just lost control of the mower. I ran up over some rocks & into my iris bed. I was aggravated at myself for smashing a bunch of iris down besides getting the mower stuck on the rocks. I pulled & pushed & there was just no way I was getting that mower out of there that way. My DH was already at work so I knew I had to figure something out. I went & got the old truck we have & hooked up the mower to the hitch & pulled it out with that. I was so glad I was able to get it out of there before my DH saw what I had done. Fortunately it didn't hurt it any because it has a feature where if you hit something with the blade it just turns it off.

I kind of was having a weird day here today too, I kept forgetting what I had gone to get & having to make several trips back to get things, it was really aggravating. I was tired today, so I think that was a lot of it.

Too bad we live so far apart! My DH and yours would probably have a great time chatting about severe weather. My DH is fascinated and terrified by the weather in the spring but he knows quite a bit about it and I am sure could learn a lot more from your hubby! I hate severe weather too. I am from the east coast and we don't get weather like this. The unpredictable nature of it really scares the daylights out of me.
This looks to me like what they call a "land spout". It is essentially a tornado that doesn't have a supercell associated with it. These are usually always small and are harmless most of the time, but they can get to be strong enough to be equivalant to an EF1 or EF2 tornado. The weather service will issue a tornado warning on land spouts, so if you see one you should always call it in to the local authorities (the NWS or the police department).

Sorry, I don't mean to go all "teacher-y" on you, but my husband is a forecaster for the National Weather Service, so I get this stuff drilled into me all the time. :) We had a tornado warning the other day South of Goodland, thanks to a land spout as well. They are nearly impossible for the NWS to warn on without someone on the ground to call them in because they are almost impossible to see on the radar.

Oh, and I know that it is too late to go this year, but I would definitely recommend you go to the Storm Spotter meetings the NWS puts on every year. They are chock-full of good information aimed at keeping the public safe!

Ok, I'll get off my soap box now...
I couldn't believe she had all those babies! There were seven that hatched, they are just precious. I filled the gap under the gate with pea gravel and have gone out to check on them several times. I made a small make shift step for them to get back into the nest in the dogloo because they are so small I was afraid they wouldn't be able to get back in but they were all in there with mom tonight. She tried to flog me a few times today so they are being really good goosy parents!
Congrats on the babies. I have one goose sitting on 6 eggs. She didn't even start laying until the others were all done. I was in denial thinking she was sitting on air until one day she got up. I have no idea when they are due to hatch or if they are good.

Lizzy I was in a bad tornado in 1974 in Emporia that killed several people. It sounds weird but since then I am not afraid of tornadoes. I felt the pressure change and it is a sensation I don't think I'll ever forget. In all the years since then even when the sirens sound I normally go outside to look. I used to frighten my kids to death. Only twice in all the years since, did I make my kids go to the basement. And both times I did, a tornado touched down within a mile of my house. I couldn't hear sirens out where I live now anyway. I have gone to the basement here once. A tornado was spotted a couple miles north of here but never touched down. I am fascinated by weather and what makes what happen even though I don't know that much. However I hate rainy, drizzly, cloudy, or cold weather. I am a sunshine kind of gal for sure who likes to be warm.
I also have an extreme dislike for wind over 15 mph which seems to be the norm around here.
How scary! I would have been very upset stuck in a hospital and not able to move with weather like that. Why did they open the windows??

Glad you got your tractor unstuck. We have had more trouble lately with our machinery. The tractor just got back from being serviced today because a mouse chewed through a wiring harness in the instrument panel. Our zero turn mower got dropped off today to be repaired because the blade housing and pulley something or another broke and we replaced it, I mowed half the yard and it broke again. Ugh! I feel like our entire lawn will never be mowed all at the same time and just look nice for a few days.

One time at the house up in Rantoul I got the mower stuck in the mud down by the creek and we had to pull it out with the Jeep. Oops!

Bummer about your mowing accident! I LOVE iris. We have a few growing here but someday I would like to have a cutting garden and have lots of bearded iris varieties. They are one of my favorites.

I FINALLY got a nap in at 5 PM! We both needed it. She cried most of the way back from the mower place in Whitewater. I stopped a bunch of times to give her a pacifier but she would eventually spit it out and start crying again. The last time I stopped the car was facing south and I didn't get in all the way and the wind slammed the door shut on my ankle! Arrgghhh. It hurt really badly. I am glad she settled down tonight. Daddy got to cuddle her while she was all sweet while I went out in the thunderstorm to round up the horses who almost killed me several times trying to bring their spooky, foolish selves back into their dry lot for the night. Everyone stay safe tomorrow if I am not back on!

I do remember St. Mary's. I visited friends and family there and some friends' parents worked there. I never knew about opening windows in preparation for a tornado. That must have been horrifying. I am thankful for elevators now!

We have a push mower, but want a rider, as there is a lot to mow. I guess we have always had old ones, or I am heavy enough because they never shut off on me. There are things I could run over or clobber, though!

I hope you find your glasses and they didn't blow away!

Rest in peace, Hermione.

My little EE that has been fighting egg peritonitis lost the battle overnight.

She was egg bound a couple of weeks ago, and the egg must have broken inside her. She has been weak, but while I was at my daughter's in Reno, she got to the point she couldn't stand. My VDH (Very dear husband) made sure she was in a safe place in the coop and gave her food and water 3 times a day for the whole week. (he didn't want her to be separate from the others because she would be lonely) She was still alive last night when I got home about 11 pm and raised her head a little when I petted her. She was dead this morning when I went out to take breakfast to them.

It is really hard to be a chicken. Maybe she will draw a better hand in her next life. Sleep well, sweet girl.

Back in the day, the common scientific thought was to open the windows so that the wind would blow through the house and not take the house with it. However, they now say that opening windows in the event of severe weather is a BAD THING to do. They now say that it is more likely to take the roof off of the house (or worse) if you leave the windows open. They also say that houses with an attached garage are more likely to have damage from strong straight-line winds or tornadoes because the garage door is the weakest link. Once it blows in, the wind can "grab hold" of the roof or any other part of the house and take it away.

There are many times that I have thought that it was too bad that I live so far from so many others on here. There are several on here that I would love to meet and spend the day with! I am sure our husbands would have a blast chatting about weather. I am born and raised in KS, but that doesn't keep me from being scared of the weather. Its sheer power scares me. Add to that the unpredictability, and I just prefer to hide. We had a small rain shower yesterday, and my DH was sitting in our sunroom watching it rain. It seems like he is always working when it storms, so it was nice to have him home, even if it wasn't a severe storm. I think he enjoyed actually getting to watch the storm, rather than watching it via the radar.

ivyrash, show girls are a cross between a silkie and a turken. They are called that because with no or few neck feathers it looks like they have a fancy hat on.
Josie that was a great clutch of geese. I'd be tickled if my girl hatches any of her eggs.
I also agree on the coast. Every one used to say that hurricanes were so awful...how could you live on the coast? The way I see it you have at least a week to prepare or evacuate. In tornado alley you might have seconds.
Lizzy, I giggled when I read "back in the day". That really dates me!

But you are right. We were taught that all through grade school and had drills to open the windows and lay under our desks. I'll bet thinking back a lot of people got rain in their house for nothing!
Sharol I am so sorry about your hen. It is sad. I just lost my best colored Olandsk hen to being egg bound. She was a gift from my daughter which made it even worse.
Well my heart is broken this morning. I had 8 100% English Orpingtons being shipped from Mississippi. I went to the post office to pick them up and 4 of them were dead. And of course 2 of them were the cuckoos I really wanted. The seller did refund my money right away which was great. These are 6 weeks old and huge for their age. I ended up with one black, one blue, one splash and one almost white (it has gray on its head) Three of them already look like boys. I sure hope that isn't the case. I placed a bid on 10 more from the same guy that are younger. He was so honest and I really do want those English. I am pushing food and water to the survivors right now. I guess that means another mess to clean in the kitchen. I sure hope they do okay.

I was hoping you'd take that comment the right way, especially since I wasn't sure exactly when that was taught. I bet a lot of people had more than just water damage if they had windows open... However, I can definitely find some irony/humor in running around OPENING windows when it starts to rain!

Yeah it was less than a smart moment for someone! If a tornado hit it would probably break most of your windows anyway. Maybe Dorothy (WofOz) should have opened her windows before they knocked her out!
