Consolidated Kansas

Trish, I too wish I was closer so I could help you out. I hope you get some good news at the doctor's office.

Trish's experience has really made me realize how much I need to be cognizant of what would happen to my animals if I were suddenly incapacitated. There is so much I do that would take a long time to explain to someone else how to take care of everything, and I would hate for the animals to suffer just because someone didn't know what they need.

It is actually quite bright here now - the sun is out and it is above freezing. The 7-day forecast looks even better after today. I am such a nerd I have an app on my phone that tells me the sunrise/sunset times and how many hours/mins of sunlight we have each day. As of today, our days are a whole 10 minutes longer than on the shortest day of the year.

Just yesterday I wrote that my BR turkey tom doesn't display or gobble and he must have been reading up on this thread last night and decided he better pick up his game, because as of today all that has changed. Now at every sound in the yard, I hear gobbling in tandem and he is trying to keep up with the RP on displaying as well.

You are so lucky HEChicken. We are still in the 20's and this mist or whatever it is has actually gotten worse. I guess I need to man up and go face the weather. Ugh! Some days I just hate going out. I guess this is one of them. I'll bet I don't stand around enjoying the birds though. This wet cold is just too hard on all my aches and pains.
Being old sucks.
Waiting anxiously to hear from Trish. It's getting late enough now I am kind of worried.

Danz, I really don't plan on raising Emus again. My neighbor said he had this one for over two years and thought it to be a male, as there were no eggs. I had some empty shells at one time, but I think I sold them on EBay. If I run across some I'll let you know.

Well the news is not good, I have a fracture of the right tibia. I will be seeing an Ortho Dr in Wichita as soon as they can get me in. Arrrrrggggghhhh!

Oh no - that is awful - I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am. Was he able to give you any kind of prognosis for healing time?

Trish my daughter broke her fibia and her tibia. She had to have surgery then she was put in a boot thing for about 6 weeks. She also had no one to help her care for her chickens and dogs. She boards and trains dogs. She got on craigslist and got a little seated walker. That is how she did her chores. There was a basket she could put food and water in and she scooted along to each pen to do the work, but was able to stop and sit when she fed and when she got tired. It might be something worth looking into. She bought hers pretty cheap cause it was of course used.
I'm so sorry to hear that it is that serious.

Trish, that is not good news at all. Wishing you a speedy recovery with no complications. You do have someone that can come and help you with your chores, right? I will offer my help if you find you need it on your road to recovery. I have to go down the bank to the creek to feed the ducks and now I am going to be real cautious. I'm thinking of tying a rope to the trees to help me down.
Danz if you have any girl ducks you need to move let me know. We moved them to the creek after loosing quite a few and now they seem to be safer and happier.
Yesterday's weather was really nice compared to today. We had decent temperatures and beautiful sunshine. I cleaned out a couple of pens and made sure everyone had clean water and food. These chooks are really going thru the feed. I must not be feeding them enough FF because they empty their dry feeders, too. I brought my FF buckets in the house because I was tired of the thin layer of ice on top. KKB got electricity in the chicken coop(s). Now I can use the heated dog bowls for water. We have just been using the rubber tubs and with KKB helping me with the water now it hasn't been too bad. But if it gets and stays below zero again, I will definitely use them.
Our turkeys have been strutting for quite awhile now, but lately they have started holding their wings out and "square dancing". The wild turkey is usually in the middle. I'm trying to figure out which Tom is her favorite. Do they pair up?
I believe one of the Zimmerman BOs just started laying. She was singing the " see what I did song " and I found an egg in the corner of the coop. Later I saw her go back to that area and she looked sad/confused, I guess she was looking for her egg. I have been getting 2 eggs a day, sometimes. Now that I have electricity I will hang a light in there. What time should I set it to come on at?
Ralph congrats on the emu. I hope that the injury is not too severe and that she heals up quickly.
Well, I'm going to say it, I hope the rain happens tomorrow. It is getting real dry around here. I hate mud, but we need moisture. And then next week in the 40s and 50s, woohoo!!!
