Consolidated Kansas

Oh no - that is awful - I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am.  Was he able to give you any kind of prognosis for healing time?
I just went to my family Dr since I already had an appt. today & she did the x-rays in her office. She is sending me to an Orthopedic surgeon & I see him in the morning. He comes to Winfield so I don't have to go to Wichita, which is a good thing because I found out I can't fit in the car with my leg in this full leg brace except for laying across the back seat. It's not exactly comfortable. I guess I won't be going in the car much for awhile.

OQueenBee no she really doesn't have anyone. I would be there in heartbeat if I could get away myself. I would be in the same bind she is if something happened to me.
So I was thinking if some of you who are in the Wichita area or otherwise local would be willing to help Trish feed just one day for her it might get her through the worst part depending on when the actual ortho work will be done. Since I can't get down that direction right now, I'm willing to donate a few $$ to help pay for a critter sitter for a day or something. I think we all have some weaknesses in our support system and would need help if something happened to one of us as well. I worry about that all the time.
Also QueenBee I have two ducks I think I could sacrifice. They should be at point of lay cause they came from the same group yours did or just slightly younger. I had let these girls out of the pen with all the boys to join the breeder ducks but they just hung around the old pen and wouldn't join the others. When it got so cold I just put them back in the pen.
If you hear of anyone needing boys to butcher I have almost 20 of them. I was going to butcher them myself but it's been too cold.
I've got to reduce a bunch of these birds.
I caught 16 nice sized roosters to be butchered. I have one more that I wanted to eat myself cause he is huge but he is so sweet I hate to do it. I may give up and throw him in the group. I probably have another 20-30 that aren't quite up to eating size. In another month or two I'll have a bunch more boys to butcher. I should try to sell them now and get them out of here.
Then I have gobs of the really pricy cockerels I need to sell but I'm not selling them for a prayer. I paid way too much for them as chicks to sell them at butcher prices. I guess when we have a decent day I can take pictures and put up a few adds for them. I'm sure I'd have better luck selling them if I sold by pairs but I want to keep as many breeding girls as I can.

Danz that is a great idea about each person doing one day a week - I could help out in that way, even though I am too far away to be able to help every day.

I think the problem with a chair like that for Trish is that there is enough of a hill and uneven surface at her place that most of the pens wouldn't be accessible by a chair like that.

I would definitely pen your chickens until you are sure what ever came around doesn't return.
Personally I don't know if bumble foot surgery pays to do or not. The ones I worked on always seemed to have it come back. I think just giving shots of penicillin works as well as anything. It's said to be a staff infection and they are so hard to eradicate. Now if the bird is in a lot of discomfort I would do the surgery and follow with flushing it each day and giving antibiotics. But if the bird is getting along okay I'd just give the antibiotics and call it good.
That's just my opinion from what I've dealt with. I am sure other's see it entirely different.
Wow free straw. If I were close I'd jump on that. Very nice of someone.

Thanks! I guess it's off to the forums to figure out dosage etc. I appreciate your advice.

Trish, depending on how close you are, I'd be willing come help you feed your animals and do things that need done. I'm in Haysville. Are you very close to Haysville?

On your bumblefoot question (should have chimed in earlier).

I have had several chickens with bf. I lost a roo last year to complications from it. I have an EE hen who is 3. She was treated (we did the surgery twice) for the first time when she was about a year old. It comes back periodically. That said, she is still laying 4 eggs a week or so and seems healthy. One of her feet was swollen for several months. We had the best luck doing the surgery and then after the bandages were removed, I made sure the roosts were clean (not easy in the winter) and sprayed her feet at bedtime with vetercyn for an extended period. We used the liquid wound care stuff in the spray bottle. It isn't cheap, but for some reason the ph changes that it causes seems to help with the healing.

We dug around in her feet (yes both of them) and got out all the stuff we could, but there was no real "head" in one of them. I then used triple antibiotic ointment and iodine (clear), and used a bit of gauze over the wound and wrapped it in vet wrap. There are good instructions for wrapping the foot over in the illnesses thread. I left them wrapped until the vet wrap looked really nasty and then unwrapped them at bedtime and treated with the vetercyn. When I checked her feet the next morning, the spots had healed over, so I didn't re-wrap them.

We did this again last summer, but I'm not going to do the surgery on her again. She is a really good girl and easy to treat, but I'm not going to put her through it again.

I have had more success with a couple of others that were treated at the same time as her first surgery. In those birds, it wasn't as far along, and they cleared right up with the first surgery.

My theory is that bf is way more common than most people think. I think my girls picked it up when they got stuck with thorns from a tree in our yard that drops branches occasionally.

Just my opinion and experiences.

I've never been to her place so I just have to guess at what it looks like. I know every one has plenty to do but a couple hours one day wouldn't be that big of a deal. I have her paypal address if anyone who isn't local would like to send her a little for a critter sitter. Just PM me. I hope this is something they can fix with a low boot or cast so she can at least get around. I know her bedroom is upstairs and that has got to be a challenge on it's own.
When I was looking for a place in the country that was one of my prerequisites. That it had to be a single level home or at least have the master bedroom and anything I would use on a daily basis on the main level. I'd had back surgeries already at that point and knew the day was coming soon I wouldn't be able to handle stairs well.
Ralph my sister bought one of those walkers from Harbor Freight for my dad. He didn't use it much except to go to the bathroom but in the later stages of his life even then he would have to stop and use the seat going just 20 feet or so. They certainly have their place. On that subject, so do the motorized carts at Walmart. It's impossible to push a walker and a cart at the same time!!
It's supposed to warm some today. I can't wait. It sure isn't looking promising yet. We had lots of freezing fog last night and it's still a little foggy out.
I've got a load of feed ordered for later this morning and will need to take those roosters to town. Going to be a busy day.

Hello everyone, I finally made it back up to my computer, not at easy task since it's on the 2nd floor. I went to the Ortho specialist this morning & got some better news I guess you could say if there is good news about a fracture. The fracture is in the fibula on my right leg closer to the knee, which is more unusual I guess. The Dr. said it happened due to my twisting my leg when I fell, which I knew right away was a bad way to fall, but what can you do. Possibly if I hadn't been holding a chicken at the time I could have protected myself better, but the hen didn't get hurt at least. Anyway, it turns out the bone I broke isn't a weight bearing one so I was given a walker & I will be starting physical therapy next Tuesday two times a week for 4 weeks. My leg is really sore in several places, I really did a job on it. I irritated the tendon down the back of my leg so it hurts about the worst next to the fracture & then I sprained my ankle & my knee is swollen as well. The Dr. was a bit concerned about the knee, but it's a wait & see after the swelling goes down. He said if I continue to have problems with it after 2 weeks he will order an MRI & follow up from there. So overall I guess I lucked out if I had to break my leg that was the bone to break.

My DH is pretty stressed right now having to take over for everything pretty much that I do here so if anyone is so inclined like Danz said to come & help out a day & give him a break from caring for chickens he doesn't even like that would be great. He is muddling along with written instructions from me, but he really doesn't know what he's doing. I'm not going to be able to go down there for awhile until I can get some function back in my leg. It's too risky for me to be going up & down that hill till I'm able to navigate a little better. Right now I'm too unstable & I could too easily fall again especially now that the snow & ice are melting & there is mud now. I hope I can get this swelling down & get things settled down soon so I can have less pain & be able to do more. At least I'm not in a wheelchair like I was yesterday & I got rid of the full leg brace, that thing was the pits.

Are you very far from Haysville? If you're not too far, I'd come help ya a little bit.
