Sharol he's pretty. Not marked just right for show but still a gorgeous bird. He'd be a great breeder. Have you heard back from Dee yet?
Trish I believe CHICKENROOKIE lives in Oathe if I remember right...So much closer to me.
I'm not accomplishing a thing so far today. I got up late and can't seem to get my rear in gear. I've been looking at prices for K-cups. I bought a sample pack of Cafe Escapes and they are to die for. They had a caramel and a vanilla that was out of this world. Normally I am a chocolate fiend but these drinks were so smooth and great tasting I would love to have some on hand to pamper myself with. Perfect for a cool evening sweet treat.

Wow, this has been busy in the past 20 or so hours since I was last on. Danz, I'll be curious to know what you find out when you call the humane society. It does seem very irresponsible to release known feral cats to hunt and kill the native wildlife, or to become prey themselves but I'll remain open-minded until I hear their side of things. At least they are neutering them before releasing them. People often don't realize how fast cats and dogs can reproduce if left to their own devices and if each person would just neuter them, it would have a huge impact on the number that are put to sleep in humane societies across the country each year.

Well, it is a gorgeous day out there today despite the wind. I was able to go out without even a coat on and it felt so nice to be outside. I'll be taking advantage of that the rest of the day today so probably won't be online much after this either.

I am done medicating turkeys and they are all so much improved - I'm really glad I did it. They looked miserable this time last week with big, puffy sinuses and standing around most of the time looking like they didn't want to be here. Of course, last weekend was super cold too, but I think the swollen sinuses had more to do with their misery. I am so glad I obtained the Tylan a few months back to have on hand for if I ever needed it as it made treatment so much easier than if I'd first had to go out looking for it. That reminds me, I still need to order the Agrimycin so I'll have it if I ever need it.

One of my Exchequers has finally started to lay again - yay. It has been 6 weeks or so since I last had a white egg so it is a welcome addition. My Welsummers and Barnevelder are also laying some lovely dark eggs so it is nice to have the contrast in the egg basket again.

Well, enjoy the nice day everyone and get outside!!!

Yes, Olathe and not sure what I am looking for except to not give any more dollars to TSC! Was considering maybe something unique this spring but too new to the game. I purchased my current chooks in Harrisonville Mo. I currently have a buff orp and barred rock.

Well, it seems like I've missed a ton--50 or 60 pages of posts! I've been busy helping my mom, she had open heart surgery for a valve in November. She's doing so much better now, so now I can start going in every other day instead of every day. Trish, are you planning any hatches right now with your broken leg?

What a day. First I took a picture out my north doors this morning. Evidence the dogs were really enjoying the warmer sunshine this morning.
When I was out feeding I found my entire group of sex link juveniles have bad colds. I hadn't noticed anything before today. So out with the antibiotics into their water. Sure hope they get over it quick. Those are supposed to be my layers this spring for eating eggs. I am sure this bad weather lately has lowered their immunity. They had all been really healthy up to this moment so I hope it's just a passing thing.
I got the straw put in the two new goose shelters. Then I put up a second roost for the Midget white turkeys.
I fed all the birds a special mix today. It was quinoa, barley, wheat, mixed bird seed with everything imagineable in it and then mixed it all in their regular feed. I figure all of them could use a little boost of energy after the cold weather and the changes.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what on earth I could do for shelters and pens. That meant I wandered around a lot and got little done.
CHIKENROOKIE, I may have asked you before. Are you wanting layers and pets, just layers or what? My recommendations for the calmest birds that lay well are Speckled sussex, orpingtons, and brahmas. Those three breeds can be "in your lap" kind of birds and all lay really well. Of course if you are looking for a bunch of colors you can go all kinds of directions.

I have 6 Red Sex Links that I received in a hatchery mix in March 2012. I sure would like to know for sure what the mix is, as these are my best layers and also produce the largest eggs; many are double yoke. They are also the gentlest hens I have , and they sing a lot. They are closer to buff than red in color, and lay a large pinkish-brown egg. Anyone know what rooster and hen combo I need to produce these characteristics?

What are you considering unique? Are you looking to show or back yard pets that are really pretty chickens? And what age are you looking for?

Ralph depending on where you got them they can be a combination of things. Usually some type of rock, barred rock or white rock and either a New Hampshire or Rhoad Island Red rooster. I tried producing my own sex links using the formula K state does which is a New Hampshire roo over white rock hens. I ended up with all kinds of colors. The New Hamp was a heritage bird but the white rocks obviously had been bred for production not for purity. I ended up with all kinds of colors and I still don't think the girls were the only ones showing color. I am just growing them out to see what happens. These are the ones that I found had colds yesterday. Geez!
Anyway further reading I see that the white rock needs to be a silver based white rock. How would you know unless you bred your own line? I am sure the birds will be excellent layers but they sure didn't turn out to be totally sex link chicks.
If you don't care about sex linking you can still produce your own layers.

What Danz said, those hatchery chickens can be mixed with so many things, none of them are pure breeds. They breed them to be the most productive egg layers & the birds they use to make them aren't pure in the first place. I'm going to also try an experiment this spring with a heritage New Hampshire Red rooster over Silver Laced Wyandotte hens. That is supposed to produce Cinnamon Queens & be sex linked at hatch. We'll see if that is actually what happens, it should be interesting.

I hope everyone is out enjoying this warmer weather while we have it, I wish I could get out & enjoy it, but unfortunately I'm pretty limited. I know it's just teasing us & it will get worse again, it's still winter after all.

Well, I posted my 2 extra roosters on Craigslist this morning. (the orp/marans cross and the BC Marans). The cross is causing problems in the run, but he isn't human aggressive (just other rooster aggressive and he is picking on my beta EE rooster). Hum, just got a call on the mixed roo. Yeah!!!

One of the problems with hatching is the extra roos. sigh. I'm hoping Butch's boys can get along together so I don't have to get rid of one. When they hatch into your hand, it is hard to let go.

Wish me luck on the Craigslist call.
