Consolidated Kansas

Wow its so windy out. I just got back from town. Went to see my sister for a few minutes after I got done elsewhere and spent 2 hours. Whoops! Now I still need to bundle up and go take care of the birds. I feel like I've already put in a full days work. I'm not at all looking forward to being out there today. You know some days it would be great to just have a day off. DH is going to be late so I've got to get some stuff on for dinner. I'm going to try a new recipe if I ever get it started. But I guess the chickens probably want to eat so I have to do it.

I agree. That wind is awful (and very cold for 50 degrees). I have a lengthy list of things I intended to do outside this afternoon that are going to wait until Saturday and hope for warmer and better. It is just too cold to power wash the garage floor (and it REALLY needs it - at least one of my hoodlums (the puppies) is routinely using it as a bathroom. I'll spray the icky spots and then powerwash when it is warmer (I hope) on Saturday.

I'm getting 4-5 eggs a day from my 10 laying hens and 2 pre-lay pullets. Much better than 0 from them. Love the longer days.

keep warm and safe.

My eggs are slowly picking up but not like I hoped. If the darned weather would stabilize that would help.
I caught this English Orp hen stranding up in the cage. She has been sitting a lot due to her whatever is wrong with her leg. I wanted to show you all what a huge basketball of a chicken she is. She IS standing up and not sitting in these pictures. Kind of hard to take through the cage bars so the pics aren't as good as I'd like. She's like a huge ball of fluff. The feathering in front of her in the first picture is the little brahma pullet that had a brain injury. She looks like a miniature bird next to this one.

She is gorgeous. I love the feather markings.

I love that color Danz, I didn't know you had any that color. I would love to have some of the BBS Orps, but with the other chicks I ordered for spring that will give me 3 colors & that had better be it. There are so darned many pretty colors they're coming up with in those, but you have to stop somewhere. I was just thinking awhile ago if this spring I can get my other hoop coop built maybe I can divide it in the center like I did the Orp coop & put the heritage BRs in half & the heritage RIRs in the other half. We'll see how they feather out, if the coloring is really nice I may keep them & raise some, but it just depends. The parent birds looked nicely colored, but it's hard to tell from photos sometimes so we'll just wait & see. My Blue Laced Barnevelder eggs are supposed to be here tomorrow, I hope they get here OK. I'm hoping to get my replacement Speckled Sussex eggs some time next week.

We spent most of the day today in Wichita for appointments & errands. I don't go much of anywhere right now that I can't use an electric cart because I can't walk too well with this fractured leg. I'm still hurting pretty bad most of the time & I just can't stand on it for very long at all without it yelling at me. I spend a lot of my time with my leg elevated & icing it still in several places that I hurt.

When we were driving into Wichita today we had just turned onto highway 77 when my DH said he saw a coyote run across the highway up ahead of us aways & into the field. By the time he told me it was already out of sight so it must have been really moving. That was about 10:00 this morning, so in the daytime. I figure it had been over at someone's farm trying to get some free food & was going back to it's home to sleep. It ran right in front of a big semi trailer, but it was running fast enough to not get hit, darn I hope it stays over on it's side of the highway.

These girls are about the same color as my Breda fowl and pretty close to the blue cooper Marans I used to have. I really do like those colors but my favorite are splashes. I lost both of my splash girls so I am hoping when I start hatching from these I get some splash as well. The same guy I bought these from as chicks just sold 8 for $725 and $65 shipping. I think I was pretty lucky that I won the auction for these at a decent price.
Hopefully when I get some of these roosters out of here I'll be able to move birds around enough to start some hatching egg producing on these girls.
Some of my Hinksjc have started laying as well. I really want to separate several of those for specific breeding but once again I am short of coops/pens. These birds are so big they take more room than some others.
I was looking on line and found some decent priced Carbaryl dust so I ordered 24 one pound containers of it. After I placed the order I wish I had ordered all they had. I think they had like 53 in stock. Sevin is getting so hard to find and the price is getting insane. If this gets here fairly quickly with no problems I might just order the rest of what they have in stock. I have no idea how much I use a year but I never have enough on hand. I used to buy it in 5 and 10 pound bags for a little of nothing. I was reading today that there had been some legislation a few years ago removing it for use for animals due to breathing hazards to humans etc. So I guess that is why now they only sell it in one pound containers at a time and have quadrupled the price.
I've got to get up early in the morning and find something to put these roosters in so my friend can transport them in his car with his kids etc. I was going to do that today but by the time I got home and then did all my chores it was dark again. I swear no matter what time I get up the days are just never long enough.

Yeah that's all you can seem to find any more are the little cannisters. Walmart has them in the 3 packs usually in the garden section, that's where I usually end up getting them. I'm sure I will need to buy some more when I start cleaning out coops in the spring. I have that to look forward to when I get this leg healed up, all the maintenance I haven't been able to do while I'm recuperating.
