Consolidated Kansas

My danzsizing was a success until the babies hatched and I bought more!!! I got rid of almost all the so-so birds and have added lots of nice ones. I'm actually feeding more now than I ever have. I've got some young breeding stock that is just beginning to lay. I need more houses to separate colors and stuff. I need to chose my breeders and sell off a bunch of cockerels in particular.

I'm trying to focus on Brahmas and Orpingtons. And I'm hoping to one day get all 100% English Orps.
Of course I still have Breda Fowl, Sussex, and some Cochins too. I'm just trying to produce all top quality lines.
The Sabastopols, turkeys, ducks, peafowl and guinea are just more things to care for.
Between weather, finances, and time I never seem to get caught up.

Oh, good heavens...you and I are like peas in a pod. I am glad Pinwheel has the ability to be pragmatic or it'd be a lost cause!!

Taz!!! Glad to see you! Didn't know you took the same break I did. Are we all hopeless? No rest for the wicked...

Its good to have you both back, Taz and Chooks. Its been sort of quiet around here. Hawkeye moved away and went back to work so she doesn't check in very often any more, and Deerfield kind of the same without the move. A couple others were forced out of chickens by neighbors and....it got down to where there were only a handful of us from the "old days" plus a few newbies who would stop in, post a couple of times and then disappear again. You know how it goes.

Chooks - so glad you were able to stay in the game after all. I think you said the Konzas moved on already right? Ahhh well...I really don't have room for another breeding project anyway. I am focusing on several things at the moment and looking forward to spring when hatching can take off in full. What breed of sheep does Pinwheel keep?

Yeah, I knew Hawkeye was going...I hope that all went well. I know a bit about Daren/Michelle and their issues. It stinks to have zoning issues to fight.

I still have Konzas. I sold off most of the adults and juvies and kept a few, plus had a few chicks and eggs. The very minute I realized I was moving and not closing down, the eggs went in! I have eggs coming at about 3 a week now, and want to mix the breeders up a bit for selection of size. I'm going to have to build again...

I'm not at all sure what sheep Pinwheel has! I'll have to get her on here so she can speak to that. I think she's butchering some soon- I've been trying to ignore them until then so I don't get all attached. You know how I sob like a baby when I think about things like that. I'm terrible. Once I know who's staying and is a keeper I'll pay attention to them!

Well I have another physical therapy session this morning, I'm not looking forward to it. Last time the gal made me hurt so bad I suffered all the next day. I think we're going to have to back off a little or I'm not going to get anywhere. With Fibromyalgia you can't push your body like other people or you just backpedal instead of making progress. The therapists want to go gung ho & I just can't do that. I want to get healed as soon as I can, but I have to do the work at my pace, not theirs.

I hope it went well. You're right; if you push TOO hard, you'll cause the muscles to backlash and tighten up even worse.

Hi, all!

I'm not even going to try to catch up, but I did want to pop in and say, "hi!" Things are starting to level out and now that I'm done moving the whole facility I can breathe. I also have a new farm partner, Pinwheel, who has just recently joined BYC. She's got a fabulous farm she's been working for 15+ years with sheep, birds, etc. She hadn't had any poultry in years, so this is great for both of us. Her farm is her real business and she has produce at farmers' markets all over and sells all products from sheep (wool, meat, etc.). It's been wonderful working with her during this move.

I'm still working with Alison on some projects, and that collaboration is good, too.

I'll be on the road a lot more than in previous years and hope to see you guys along the way- can't wait for warm weather and talk of spring!!

How is everyone?

Good to see you back, and I'm glad you still have poultry. I'm jealous of that farm partner you have. DH and I have talked about finding someone who would do that with us, since we have to live in town right now, but we've never gotten much farther than talk.

You know, I sort of knew the mix of people here had changed, but I hadn't sat down and figured out just how much. Wow.

We still haven't seen the fox and haven't yet heard from DH's friend. My SIL texted me this morning that my brother had seen a fox trotting down their street yesterday afternoon. Maybe I need to send the friend there, too. Their ducks have the run of the back yard, and there are gaps in the fence that would make it very easy for a fox to get in.

Hey everybody, I just lost ALL 6 of my chickens a couple nights ago to a fox. I'm looking to buy between 8-10 more. Please, if anybody has any for sale let me know. You can text me at 316-258-3494 thank you!

It has been very quiet here! I wonder what happened to several people. Others I know. It seems like summer got people busy, then school starting got other people busy, then holidays etc etc. Seems like we've had gobs of new people but they just kind of disappear. They need to stick around long enough to know we enjoy hearing their stories and freely offer unwanted advise!

Personally, I don't know what I'd do without this forum. This is where I go when I want to relax and take a break. Every once in a while I see that someone is logged on but they don't post. I have to share my excitement with someone and friends/family around here don't understand my passion for the birds. It's pretty sad when you can tell by their reactions that they are NOT listening and just want you to shut up already.

OMG, I soooooo know that feeling. My kids eyes will get fixed facing the backs of their skulls if I even dare to ask them to get eggs so I can fix their breakfast!!

Chooks I'm glad to see you back, I'm glad you still got to keep going with chickens. I'm kind of down & out right now with my broken leg, it's hard not being able to go out & check on all of my birds, but I have had some great people from here coming to help out & looking out for me & my birds. I don't know what I would do without everyone here, we have become great friends & I look forward to each day reading & hearing what's going on with everyone.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, what kind are you looking for? I don't presently have any for sale, but I should before too long. If you're in Wichita I'm not that far away on the north edge of Winfield. Send me a PM & I can tell you what all I will have for spring chicks hopefully.

Oh I forgot to say that therapy went much better today, I told the therapist I couldn't handle all she was trying to make me do right now & we scaled it back. My leg is still very swollen in the calf where the fracture it & I showed her how tight is still is so she gave me a break & we iced it before I left there. I'm going to have to try to keep it elevated more & ice it more often if I can. I have two appts. next week to go back again.

My Barnevelder eggs got here unbroken today, but they sat them on the cold concrete on the front porch while I was gone. Those postal service people just don't get it at all. Fortunately there was quite a bit of insulation in there, so hopefully the eggs will be OK.
