Hello All! It's been awhile since I posted. We have all been very sick here at my place. My poor chickens have had to tough it out with no special treats from me the past few days. My DH has been taking care of them. I am awaiting the news that all are fine as he just went to check on them. My DH has not gotten the flu and I dread the thought of him getting it.

It has taken me longer to recover than I expected as I have been taking care of the boys, who also have the flu, during the day. Feeling better now, just need to catch up on some much needed sleep & get my little one fully recovered. He is still battling the fever. At least the Tylenol/Motrin combo is working to keep it down but, when it wears off, it wears off! He just walked in! All is well in the hen house! Whew!
My Cochin frizzle cockerel started crowing about a week ago, cutest thing ever. He also, on the same day, decided he was going to mate with every girl in the hen house!! Although, they were not having it. I watched as Ann, my RIR mix chased him all around the yard! I couldn't help but watch all day and crack up at his lack of experience. I guess that shows my lack of chicken experience too. I have never been around a young cockerel/rooster before. Is this normal behavior or is he trying to live up to his name I gave him at two days old..."Valentino"

This one was taken 1/8/2014 and is the first time he grabbed onto something other than my hair and his daddy's shirt.

This was taken 12/27/2013 and is the first time I got a picture of him smiling.

He's adorable. I especially like that happy little face in the second picture.

I'm glad you're feeling better enough to stop by. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your DH!

I have only a little experience with roos, but mine were hilarious when they were learning to crow. I also remember the first one leaving all his girls with no feathers on their backs. They would try to resist, and I usually knew what he was up to when I'd hear a loud, high-ptiched "BWAAAAACK" from the yard, followed by a lot of flapping around.

Aw, Lizzy- he is adorable ! What fun ! I felt like things got a lot easier once we got to three months.
So, I was wondering since egg laying is picking up, when do you all think the peak or best time is for a hen to be broody ? And, do any of you think there is a difference in what the temperature is in relation to getting more pullets then roos ? Like if its cool out and a hen goes broody you'll get more pullets? We only had one try to get broody last year and she wasn't really serious so nothing happened. I thought that if somebody went broody this year I might let it go and see what happens. I need to be aware of chicken math, but was curious .

I'm sorry to hear you all have been sick, it seems to be going around right now. Your little Cochin cockerel is probably just going through his teenage phase with his hormones raging, it's normal.

Lizzy, your little E is so adorable, I'm glad you shared that photo with us.

Wow the wind was cold today, I sure am done with winter.

Things have gotten easier. This past week, he suddenly started sleeping for longer periods at night AND going longer between feedings during the day. It is nice to finally be able to go longer than 2 hours at a time between feedings!!!

I can't say what weather produces more pullets for sure but I can tell you that hot weather has always produced more cockerels for me. Not that I've ever wanted to produce more cockerels!!! So I would guess the opposite for pullets. I'm thinking spring would be excellent for pullets. However those silly broodies will brood when they want to...not when you want them to. It seems like I have more a lot more broodies in late spring and early fall than other times.

Sorry you've been ill. We all come to love our chicken tv for sure. I still enjoy watching the silly things trying to figure out how to be a "man."
I've been on this computer all morning. I feel really tired today so instead of getting in gear I've been sitting here. It's really clouding up here and the wind is blowing hard. We weren't supposed to get any rain but it sure looks possible.

Old Sophia finally got over being broody, but now she's sick. She's making a sound when she inhales and exhales, though she can stop it briefly to eat or when we surprised her by picking her up. She has a tiny bit of nasal discharge and is breathing with her mouth open a little bit. She has one very small spot of what might be frostbite on her comb -- it's a tiny black spot. There shouldn't have been a draft in the coop, and we do keep a light in there, though it's not on all night long.

None of the other birds are showing any signs of a problem. I'm sorry to ask about this when I know it's been discussed before, I can't remember specifics and there's no good way to search through this entire thread for advice. What should I be doing for her?

Grrrr! I hate when a post you have written just disappears into lala land!

Lizzy, what a little cutie!

Renee's recipe has all sorts of stuff in it! Dried fruits, nuts, grains, spices, I think fish meal.....she has a recipe but she makes changes depending on what ingredients she has available.

The spot could be just an injury from another chicken pecking her beak or something. I would separate her from the others if you can. I recommend using Vetrx first to see if she improves. If she seems like she is really raspy I'd try tylan injectable. You use 1 cc in the breast muscle a day for 3-5 days. If you don't want to give shots you can give the same med to her by squirting it down her throat but this can cause some throat irritation.
