Consolidated Kansas

okjenyp, Welcome to the group. There's tons of people here from the Wichita area and I'm sure they'll jump in soon. Join in and tell us more about yourself.

Not knowing much about chickens before I got 12, I got 5 Cornish cross( 3 ended up being Roos!) and 2 buff Orpington pullets. 1 RiR roo, 1 EE roo, and 2 black pullets( 1 has grey tipped wings unsure the breeds).. More roosters than I need! So I have been reading up on the Cornish cross and find that they aren't good for laying eggs.. So I guess we will have to eat those.. And the other Roos we will have to eat as well.. I just want to keep one. And try to hatch some eggs later. My dogs think the chickens are for their dinner. Luckily they can't get into the chicken pen. I converted an old metal shed into their coop

Jen, we all learn from what we do. I had raised chickens 40 years ago and I wonder now how we ever kept anything alive. There is a whole 'nother world out there in chickens that lots of people never know about. This is the place to come to learn for sure. And you will get some differing opinions now and then but that just broadens your scope of making your own educated guesses. Until chickens can talk we'll never have all the answers. There's a nice balance of give and take in opinions here, but it's discussions... not arguments.
Feel free to ask questions or just chat.

I have been pretty lucky so far. Lost 2 little ones the first day. But that happens. I am very thankful for this site! I have learned so much.

Garden tilled, check. Potatoes planted (why do I always buy too many?), check. Onions planted, check. Peas planted, check. If I can walk tomorrow it will be a miracle. That wind is awful, and I put it off yesterday trying to avoid the wind (that worked well, not.).

The only question is, nap first? shower first?

Hi, I'm jen. I live in Wichita. I just recently started raising chicks. I have a group of 4 week olds that just went out in their coop a few days ago. And a group of 1 week chicks in the brooder. I am wondering where everyone buys feed?? I have been getting feed at Atwoods. I have checked out Valley feed and seed and Hillside feed and seed.

I was going to respond to you earlier & then my internet went down & I couldn't. Welcome to the forum & to chickens! I don't live in Wichita now, but I lived outside of Derby for 23 years till I moved here. I don't know what part of Wichita you live in, but if you're anywhere close there is a COOP in Mulvane that would be most likely a lot cheaper for feed than Atwoods. I personally think they're kind of high on feed at Atwoods. I used to buy my feed all the time at the Mulvane COOP when I lived up there. I buy my feed now at the COOP in Winfield since I live here & they're cheaper by quite a bit on most things. If you want directions to where the COOP in Mulvane is send me a PM on here & I can give them to you.

Wow it's warm here today & I have had so many aggravating issues I've been dealing with today I haven't even gotten to enjoy it yet. First we had a letter from our cell phone company I had to deal with & then another one with my phone. I was unable to make or receive phone calls or texts, so I spent a lot of my morning on the phone. Then my internet went down on my computer as well, so I just finally got that back up. I was about to throw my hands up & give up.

Thanks trish, I will check out the coop in mulvane. I looked on their website but all it has is stocks information! Which is way above my head. I just need to know how much a bag of feed is lol. And sorry to hear about the phone internet problem. Years ago people went so dependent on technology as we are today. So, when it doesn't work, we are lost

Yeah they usually don't have feed prices on their websites if they have one, just market prices. But you can call & find out.

I sure had a busy weekend. Boss called on Saturday so had to work to push an emergency change out but testing showed we had critical issues. So tedtibg continued on Sunday. The changes finally went out Sunday night around 8:00 pm. Talking about a long working weekend.

Well, I lost another hen. I was quite concern at this point. I checked every bird, making sure no one was sick. Examined the dead birds and nothing obvious. I will.keep an eye on the birds for the next few days. I can't afford to lose laying hens since I have most of their eggs already spoken for. Hechicken, I need your "I've too many pullets" problem.:D

Danz, that was one bizarre pic of ggs twin peachicks! Sorry they didn't make it.

Trish, glad you and your granddaughter had a great day watching the chicks hatched and feeding the goats. Kids do grow up fast.

Jen, welcome to our group. Lots of us live in Wichita and just outside of Wichita. There is also a coop in Benton if you are on the NE of the town.
