Consolidated Kansas

I will be spending my day setting up what will be the pen for the geese when they get older. They will get to free range some, but only when we are out there (which is a lot), and when we are not they will have a nice large pen. Inside the pen, we are setting up an A frame shelter. The back part will be enclosed on three sides to offer shelter if they should want it and the front part will be wire so they can have an outside area and still be safe. The A frame is where we will herd them at night. That is of course, after they grow up some.

Oatbucket, sounds like you will be busy today. But your birds will thank you after it's all done.

I think the problem with faverolles is if someone has never seen them or noticed their personality they just aren't that well known. I think the roosters are the most gorgeous birds and the hens are pretty plain. I love the contrast between the males and the females though.
Enjoyed the visit Trish. We got a big storm about an hour after you left. My brother said it rained really hard in Winfield. He said it looked like a hurricane with all the wind and stuff. Since he has been on the North Carolina coast for the last 30 years I am sure that is all he can relate to.
My son and his wife are house shopping in Wichita right now. He called yesterday and they found a house they loved that was at the very top of their price range. It had only been on the market two days. They put in an offer and got beat out the same day. I told him there must be something better in store for them. I do hope they find a house soon. They are living in a motel right now since they closed on the sale of their house this week.

Danz, you are right about people don't know much about Salmon Faverolle. If it wasn't because a trio came with the flock that my DH bought and you identified them for me, I won't know that they are SF. I have been seeing quite a few house up for sale in Wichita. I also see quite a few new development huzzling buzzling with new constructions near where I live. Hopefully your son and DIL will be able to find a house soon. It seems like the housing market is finally waking up.

I hope everyone is doing good. I've been doing tons of things outside. I didn't put cover on pool for winter and I'm paying for it. I've been working on it everyday and I can finally see my work paying off. I guess I didn't lock my Cochin coop last might and lost a hen

. All I found was a ton of feathers leading out to the pasture. Not sure what got her

Michelle, this is what I'm not looking forward to. DH wants to have an inground swimming pool. I'm afraid the cleaning responsibility will fall on me, unfortunately. So I've been telling him no inground pool. I can still handle the above ground pool for now, especially when DH lost some of the parts to put the pool back together this year. :P

I hope everyone enjoy the holiday. Want to thank all the veterans and military personnel for their sacrifises.

Trish, I still have the Salmon Faverolle that I got from you. I think I'll continue to keep a few because I just love how calm and friendly they are. The rooster is awesome and he protects and leads the flick well. Do you plan to eat tiger lambs or just keep them to help clear the pasture?

Ah, the Sebbie goslings... that's on my list of must have. I need to really look at my flock situation once I'm back in town in July and see if I can get a pair.

The board is slow lately. Maybe everyone is enjoying the holiday. I heard that the lake was full until the storm came through. Speaking of storm, we had about 2" of rain this last 2 days. Everything seemed to have greened up nicely. We still need more though but it's definitely a nice start.

Time to go get more stuff done around the house. I still have 1 morenpot of orchid to repot. I just can't find a time when it doesn't bloom so I can repot them so I'll just have to do it even when it's blooming. I also repotted an Adenium after the blooms dropped off. This is the first time it has bloomed since I started it from seed. I'm quite happy to see it bloomed so soon. It normally takes 4 to 5 years for seed started plants to bloom.
tweety we got these first two ewes & ram to use for breeding & will raise some lambs from them for butcher. My son also is interested in one for them as well so if we get more than one he wants it. They're all babies right now, two are 2 months old & the other is 3 months old. They all will go out to pasture as soon as the fence gets done, which seems to be taking an eternity with all of the clearing we're having to do just to get ready to put it up. There are a lot of trees & brush out there that have to be cleared so we can get to the area where the fence is & where the new part will be. Working with those darned hedge trees is the pits too with all of the thorns.

I think that was the issue I had with the SF was that not that many people knew what they were so I just didn't sell that many chicks from them. It seems like the breeds people know the best are the ones that sell the best for the most part. After someone sees some of them though they want them, for instance like the Swedish Flower Hens, they're pretty & very friendly & calm.

I enjoyed the visit as well Danz, it's always nice to see you & all of your birds. We saw the storm that came in to your place after we left, in fact we drove through it for about 30 miles or more, it was pouring. I guess the one at our place caused the electricity to go off temporarily because the microwave clock was blinking when we got here. I'm glad it had stopped raining by the time we got here so we didn't have to unload lambs in the pouring rain.

I hope your son & DIL find a house soon, that has to be hard living in a motel & not that cheap either.

It sounds like everyone is keeping busy, we're just going to be around here today & our granddaughter is finally coming over some time this afternoon. It's been over a month since we've seen her, so it will be nice to have her here again. I also have people coming to buy chicks & some laying hens from me this afternoon as well. These same people bought rabbits from me the other day & saw my chickens so they're coming back for birds today. It's too wet & muddy to do any work on the fence project today, so I guess that will get put off till it dries up a bit.

Lizzy I honestly have no idea what might be wrong with your goose. I've never heard of symptoms like that. Since there has been a drought out there you might try adding some niacin to their feed. It is essential for joint health in geese. I have no idea what else might be going on. I would just buy the cheapest supplement capsules and sprinkle it on their feed. Brewers yeast is also another great source of niacin but it usually comes in pill form. You might be able to order a bottle of loose stuff on the internet though.
If JosieChick would jump on here she might know. You might send her a PM and see what she says.
Ok, so what I don't get is that these birds are allowed to free range all day long. Isn't there niacin in greens like grass? Do you think they're still not getting enough?

Had a very bad day yesterday. I crashed my car...bad.

I still don't recall what happened but I'm ok. Only a couple of minor scratches and the airbag hit my legs. No one was with me because I was driving in to work. I was definitely preoccupied by the project I'm working on but still... Sigh! DH is a trooper and tried to tell me everything is fine. That's why we have insurance for, he said. I was quite shaken up to say the least. Believe it or not, this is my first auto accident.
I hope you're feeling OK; sometimes it takes a day or two to feel all the soreness! I'm sorry you crashed, but very glad you're not hurt seriously.

Anyone has any rain? All the storms just went around us. We need the rain desperately.

We've had a couple of downpours in the last few days. It sure has helped the garden.

HEChicken, has your garden recovered from its slow start?

Another Kansas BYCer here. I'm south of Great Bend a ways.

Welcome!

Hello everyone.
My husband and I have been in the San Juan mountains in Colorado since last Saturday.

Sounds like a nice break. I usually only worry about checking email when I'm gone, and I do that on my phone. Now that DH has a laptop, though, we'll probably be tempted to take it whenever we're gone.

I'd say there must be something better out there for them, and hopefully they'll find it soon.

Enjoy the visit, Trish; sounds like it's been too long!

One of my nephews graduated from college Sunday, and another got in a car wreck and broke his neck in two places. He's having surgery today and I haven't heard anything yet. He should fully recover, but it will be 6 months before he can do much physical labor, and at least a year before he can do any heavy labor. He's only 20, so it's bad, but it could have been so much worse.

I almost forgot... I wanted to follow up on the conversation of freezing eggs. I made a chocolate chip cookie bar with frozen eggs. It turned out really good, but it wasn't as thick as usual. I thawed the eggs in the microwave, and I wonder if that was a bad idea, so I intend to try again with eggs thawed overnight in the fridge. I've got a few more eggs in the freezer now. I'll try to follow up with ya'll again later on the success/failure of this experiment.

Been there...done that. Broke my neck but not in a car accident. He will probably have some spinal issues the rest of his life but being young is also a good thing. He should recover much faster. As long as there wasn't nerve damage with the break he should be able to adjust fairly well. Most of my neck is fused so I can't turn it like a normal person. No one really notices except me. I have to turn my whole body instead of just my neck. The only time it really creates a problem is when I am trying to back a car or other vehicle. DH got me a back up camera for my car for Christmas but it isn't mounted yet. Humm! Go figure.
I've been cleaning out the brooder house. What a job! Seems I have to do that a lot.

Another very busy day here. But I got the brooder house all cleaned out and got the chicks all treated for mites just in case and got every one back in and warm again. It was a full afternoon's work. I just got done feeding and it's already past 7:30.
I sold about 20 more birds today so that helped justify some of the work. I don't know if I'll ever catch up again. Tomorrow is another hatch day but I am too tired to even get organized for it tonight. Maybe they'll hold off until I get moving in the morning.
I'm hoping secretly I have no customers tomorrow and can find some time to do some house cleaning. I don't have a home any more. It's simply a chick hatching center.

Let us know how your experiment goes.

I hear you Danz, I'm just about burned out on hatching for this year. I need a break bad & it's coming soon!
