Consolidated Kansas

I just wanted to mention something here; particularly for people who live closer to my area but a good warning for others to keep their eyes open. I am, I believe a very giving person. And I will do whatever I can to help people in need. But there is a scammer in this area and they've made the mistake of coming around and contacting me on at least three different occasions over the last few years. Here's the situation:
These people claim to have 8 kids and are very poor. They need lots of eggs to feed all their kids. Their children however also put out feelers for their parents. Another one of their scams is to say they are donating chickens to people in the church who don't have money for food. Then they never want to come get birds; they want you to bring them to them and meet them some where with them. One excuse after another. Car problems, no money for gas etc etc.
Well here's the thing. These people may have had 8 kids, but the kids are all grown and no longer at home. The kids are out trying to drum up more birds for their parents now using the same old story. My last plea was her dad could only pay $30 for a dozen hens but of course they wanted them delivered to Emporia. Then if you were willing to deliver them they would send you a message and say this or that happened and can they owe you for the hens. In the past I even offered to give them a dozen cockerels that were 3/4ths grown and they wanted them delivered and butchered if possible.
Obviously they forget who they have previously contacted, or another one of the family members is doing the contacting, because they keep sending messages. It's a scam and I am sure there are plenty of others out there that do the same thing. I know there were some in Topeka doing the same thing, then they were selling the birds to make money. There's also a family or group that constantly advertises that they will take any unwanted farm animals. I am told these same people are taking whatever they can get and selling them.
It really bothers me that people use other people's generosity to fraud them into getting things for free.
I want to help anyone I can but I really really hate people trying to take advantage of a giving heart. Just warning you to be careful in your dealings. I have been contacted both from adds on craigslist and on facebook. I rarely advertise, so I am thinking that people mention my name and others on forums and they use that information to send messages.
I wonder how people like this sleep at night.

Thanks everyone, for the very kind words. I'm glad he's in a better place but it's so hard to say goodbye.

Danz, they are a plague in Wichita, they are mostly gypsies and run all kinds of scams, it is their lifestyle. In Wichita, they are headed up by the King family and all of them answer to him. It is kind of like the Holdermans, if you have a problem with any of them, you go to the leader.

I had a few run-ins with the gypsies when I had my business in the city, we had a meeting and the offending person had to come to me and make restitution and apologize. I still banned him and his family from ever crossing my doorstep and posted picture of the family so they could not sneak in when I was not there.

They are like another minority we know of that if they see anything unattended in your yard it means that you don't value it and they can take it.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that has had problems with these kind of people. It really goes against everything I've ever believed. I always figured I would give the shirt of my back to anyone who needed that shirt. I hate to tell anyone no, but I have to. It really bothers me to know there are people out there that truly need help and don't ask, but then there are those that are professionals at taking from everyone.
Sometimes I'm really thankful I am broke and don't have much to give.

Not a great day out at the pens today. I lost my only silver laced brahma hen. She got her head stuck in the chain link and broke her neck. Then I found one of my blue English orpington hens dead in her pen. I can assume the same thing....another broken neck. I checked her out. She was in perfect health. Plenty fat, no congestion, no stuck eggs. And guessing from where she was laying I think she must have bolted and hit the side of the coop. I think the roosters are getting spring fever and it's causing an injury here and there.
I don't know why if I have to loose one it can't be one of my extra roosters I don't need instead of a nice producing hen.

Awww I'm sorry Danz, it seems like that's how it always goes though. I've often thought the same thing. When you have all of these extra roosters it seems like they should be the ones to go.

Danz, so sorry to hear, yea it always seems to be the hens. :( I lost about 5 so far this winter but I started adding up their ages and they were all over 5 1/2 years except for my lil showgirl rooster who just couldn't handle the cold. :( I am having a very hard time getting a showgirl line started. When we moved I sold 30 for $40 to a guy and I think he thought he was getting ripped off. Now I wished I had at least some of them back. One was the cutest sebright cross hen with a showgirl, perfect sebright with a naked neck and I really wanted to see where I could go with her. She was awesome and I don't have one picture. I wonder if I could buy her back now we are settled.

Trish, I pmed prairie Creek, but if u live near rose hill it could be you or anyone here. I bought a pretty white 2 year old peacock this last summer and lost her phone number, after I told her I would try to send pics and updates. :(

Everyone take care, I am getting garden fever with this warm weather!!!

Prariefleur, so sorry to hear about your friend. All my friends have moved and I don't have any here anymore. I was just in the hospital for 9 days and not one visitor. Except my lovely sister who takes care of me and animals while I was sick, also live together. I am so blessed to have her, I don't know what I would do if it were just me, or I would be out of luck. I have a few wonderful friends, but they are in Hawaii, Florida and California so can't help in a pinch!

Good morning Peeps. New day and it's frosted out but supposed to start warming again. I am so ready. The sky looks clear so far so maybe it will be a good day. I really need to get busy on some projects outside.
I was just reading some stuff on gardening and that's just one more thing to add to my list of never ending chores. DH was mentioning last night I need to plant a couple acres of cucumbers and water melon for the birds. I'd love to but then I have no way of getting rid of the 6 million squash bugs we'd have. I was trying to read about vegetable and flower pairings to help a garden and didn't find anything that would deter squash bugs.
