Soliciting thoughts: best bedding for the brooder.
I'm thinking ahead to mid-April when the chicks come home from school. Our first ever batch brooded in the sun porch in a kiddy pool but this batch could be as many as 40 (if we get a 100% hatch, I'm not holding my breath). They will only be at school for a few days because they can be a bit distracting :) So I'll be building a permanent brooder in the storage room off the garage. Insulated, power, and not a bother to my better half.
So what's everyone's thought on bedding? Pine shavings? Sand? Something I haven't considered?

I use pine shavings in my brooders, it's easy to clean out & gives the chicks traction. I would not use sand myself, it holds moisture. Be sure to get the bigger pine chips, not the one more like sawdust.

thndrdancr that's funny! Birds are so entertaining, people who don't have them have no idea. I laugh almost daily at my dumb guineas that run around here, I call them goony guineas for a reason.

I agree with Trish. Pine shavings are the best choice. Also the larger, not the smaller cause chicks can ingest the tiny pieces.
I can spend a whole afternoon, if I had the time just watching my birds. they are too funny. I have to give those clumsy geese the top prize for entertainment though.

Danz, Im still hoping to get our chicken house next weekend. Ive promised David i wont get chicks until we get the house then all bets are off. When will you have buff orps and barred rock chicks? Also, anyone, i saw baby turkins at feed store and they were so ugly/adorable! How.friendly are they? Do they mix well with other chickens?

Hello all. I know I have asked this before but I can't find my last post or the replies. Does anyone close to or in Topeka have blue or black Marans? I'm also interested in Salmon Favoralls (sp), and Easter eggers. I was at Orchlens today and was told by one of the employees that this season has been crazy! They are having a hard time keeping chicks in stock. Also, does anyone know anyone that can build a coop for a decent price? Trying to decide if we want to build it ourselves or hire someone.
Thank You!
Ricki

New coop almost done, I must say I am not a carpenter but the boys had fun helping. Would have gotten done if I hadn't been getting called into work for grass fires.
Only thing left are door to nesting boxes, main door, windows, vent door and some wire for vent window, roosting bars. Then some paint.
