Consolidated Kansas

Danz, Im still hoping to get our chicken house next weekend. Ive promised David i wont get chicks until we get the house then all bets are off. When will you have buff orps and barred rock chicks? Also, anyone, i saw baby turkins at feed store and they were so ugly/adorable! How.friendly are they? Do they mix well with other chickens?
I've got barred rocks right now. They are laying and very fertile. The buffs just started laying a while back and I haven't been getting fertile eggs. I'll be candling some here toward the end of the week again to see if they are fertile. My roo is in molt right now but that doesn't usually affect them. I have a back up roo I can use but prefer this one cause he's much taller. Turkins are good layers. I've been told they are fairly nice birds. My fear of getting turkens would be that they would be picked on. any time you present a bare area other chicks tend to pick at it. I'd say they would be okay if you can give them some attention several times a day for the first several weeks and make sure they aren't being beaten on. The obvious paring for these would be to buy other docile breeds to go with them.

Off hand I would suggest you go to Premier Farm and Home about 8 to 9am on Saturday morning. It's on University drive to the West of Topeka avenue. Look for Dee Sauvage. She and her husband are running the swap there now. Usually a white pickup with a big white trailer on back. Her husband Karl, always wears a very colorful hat. Dee hatches lots of chicks and I'm not sure all the breeds she has right now. She did have blue marans, and salmon faverolles, and easter eggers but I have no idea what all she keeps now. If she doesn't have them she or Karl may be able to tell you someone that does. Tall her I told you to look her up.

Oh I didn't have KSKINGBees posts showing up for some reason when I wrote this. I guess he does indeed have the Marans available.
King bee I am very envious. I have no peafowl eggs yet. Lots of breeding going on but no eggs. WAITING!
Where'd you get your pyrenees?

Kskingbee, so cute and congrats on the first pea egg!

Where did you get your pups! They are so darling! Now remember with 2 after they get used the place, separate them as much as possible with one spending time with Okie and 1 with you. I didn't do this as much as I should have, so they bonded to each other, Never learning to bond to us. Then they don't listen at all. Two are a real challenge! I eventually had to rehome my girl pup, but she never was lgd material either.
You probably know all that though about training. My boy is outstanding now, they are worth it in the end! I couldn't do without him!
I wouldn't have a bird one if it weren't for him!

I was talking with a local vet tech here, she says a gal just adopted a pyr and didn't normally even like dogs! Hope she falls in love, apparently big dogs are very difficult to find a home for here and I know lgd are a whole different ballgame from a regular dog. Class of their own!

I look at Pyrs from a different perspective. I think they need to be together to learn to work as a team. Mine are very bonded to me. Of course I didn't plop them out in a field with a bunch of goats lacking human contact either. They work close to the house. Pyrs have selective hearing.. .I start early with prize for obedience. Stock up on dog biscuits and they tend to do what you need. I'm saying in your case be sure the pups are with you when you are caring for the birds. They will bond to the birds and protect them. If they start to chase a simple "No!" usually is enough to teach them they aren't toys. Pyrs are smarter than any dog you will ever own in my opinion. If you let them do their job they'll reward you with total peace of mind......when they get mature. Expect to have every piece of trash or stick or whatever else they can find drug up into a pile.

Awww they're adorable!!!

have you named then yet?

We are trying out a few names, haven't decided yet.

@Trish44 sent me a PM telling me that they were on Craigs List! They came from a farm in Independence where they were running with all kinds of fowl and farm animals. So far, they have been sleeping in one of the brooder pens in the brooder house and run all day long with the chickens, guineas, and Jake. All the peas are penned until the NPIP testing is done. The dogs are surrounded by about 65 guineas, soon to be about twenty as we are taking a load of them to auction Friday. Probably will take a few yearling peas and a few dozen Easter chicks.

Congrats on the pups KsKingBee, Okie had sent me pics right after you got them. I hope they work out great for you. I couldn't live without mine for sure, I wouldn't have a live bird or animal here if they weren't here. Our predator load is ridiculous around here. It will take them awhile to get serious about working, usually they start getting serious about it at 8-9 months. They're however still puppies till after 18 months. It takes some working with them, but like Danz said they are very intelligent & sensitive & don't like to be scolded. They really do want to please you.

Congrats on the coop Anderson Lowe, it's looking great, good job!

Boy was yesterday quite a day. I had asked a gal from Ark City to come & trim my goat's & sheep's hooves for me because I'm just not up to doing it. Fortunately she brought her mom & they worked together, thank goodness. The first two goats weren't bad, Peanut & Penny were really pretty good actually, but then we got to Patches, oh boy. She is miss untouchable & has always been that way. She ran around the pen away from us & finally I got her cornered & had one of the gals come & put the halter on her. Even then she was a mess, they finally had to put her up against the fence & hold her there to get it done. You would have thought they were killing her. We got her all done & I was giving the CD/T shots & de-worming as we went. I figured I might as well do that while we had them confined. We got to the sheep & the ewes weren't bad, they laid them down & that worked better for the sheep. Then came butthead Ram, oh boy, he was a mess. I had made a chute & he broke right through it & they had to catch him by the horns. I was afraid they were going to get hurt. Two of them sat on him while they trimmed his hooves. I didn't want him to go to the new owner with bad hooves so we got him done but it wasn't fun. I got my knee run into by the sheep & it's still sore today. They helped me get the ram tagged as well, so they were a big help. Whew, I'm glad to have that done for awhile. I think they were glad to be done too. I told the gal that next time she comes the butthead won't be here.

Then as we were about done DH came back from running & had cut open the back of his leg when he tripped over some barbed wire & after we finished up with the hoof trimming I had to take him to the ER to get his leg sown up. He ended up with 4 or 5 stitches, I lost count in there somewhere & the rest of it they steri-stripped shut. He says it didn't hurt except when he first did it. I can't imagine that but he's sticking to that story. He can't run now for a week the Dr. told him so he is upset about that.

Guys, I have a problem. Walt'z Ark won't incubate the eggs for the chicks I ordered until I can contact the State Veterinary Office and have them confirm that we can accept the chicks. Evidently, she's had lots of hatched chicks that cannot be shipped in various states because of Avian Influenza. I googled KS State Veterinary Office but came up with zilch. Does anyone know who I would contact?
