Consolidated Kansas

Daisy was my foster fail. I had her because she wasn't eating at the shelter and I had to force feed her the first day I had her. Then I wouldn't take her back. It has taken me a week to be able to even write about it.

I'm sorry sharol about your kitten, I have had some like that. In fact I have one right now that isn't growing hardly, she's tiny. She doesn't have any respiratory problems but she is just small. Her mother quit feeding her for some reason when she was really young & I had to start feeding her cat food. She is pretty smart, she comes over to me every night when I go to feed all of the outside cats & meows for me to pick her up & put her up on the rabbit hutch where I feed her & my big baby Siamese mix. I feed them separate from the other cats on another hutch because the others fight over food & neither one is aggressive enough to fight them off. Sammy, the Siamese mix is just a big baby & lover. He would make a really good inside cat but we already have 3 cats in the house & my DH says no more inside cats when these die. One of them is about 10 now, so she is getting older. She is the one who has had a broken leg twice & has a crooked leg. It doesn't stop her for sure, she still runs on it. It's funny because my DH was the cat person when we met & now he's liking the dogs better. We have two tiny little 5 & 6 pound dogs in the house & then the two GPs outside. Those little dogs in the house are spoiled rotten & he has spoiled them worse than me, which surprised me because he had such a fit over me getting dogs after my other two died. Now he talks about them like kids.

Sharon so very sorry to hear about your kitten Daisy hugs.

With the beautiful weather yesterday and the fact that chicks will be 4 wks old tomorrow and have way outgrown their brooder box we went ahead and build their starter coop/indoor chicken yard in the outside garage. This garage while it is attched to the main garages in the house is in a complete seprate building which we can see straight into the chicken area from our bed in our room. So when they get bigger we will double the size of this space plus they will have a chicken door cut into the wall that leads directly into their 10x12 chicken run. The second heat lamp on the side wall will be removed in a couple weeks when they are bigger the hanging heat lamp will most likey stay until closer to spring or when they start really not needing it. We have ventilation in 3 different direction the windows are covered with rubar wire mess that is used in concrete seeing how heavy and sharp it is we don't believe anything can get through it. As well as there is a ceiling fan for use in the summer. I will try to attach pictures I seem to have a problem attaching more then one. Please let me know your thoughts.

Also the chicks are rolling in the pine i was wanting to use Demoryer earth rather then sand for their "sand baths" but wasn't sure how old they need to be before i can give that to them since i know they will eat it?

Looks like you've got a nice set up there. You won't have to run the heat lamp all winter. I normally keep my chicks warm until they are about 8 weeks but most people recommend 6 weeks. The trick is to expose them little by little to cooler temps. When they get all feathered in they can handle the cold.
Just curious; is the ceiling fan rated for outside with a sealed motor? If not, it will probably not last out there. I stock up on cheap fans at the end of the summer most years because they end up over heating with all the chick dust. For my building I spent a chunk and bought two completely sealed units, one was even safe in water so they wouldn't over heat. They made a huge difference in how hot it got out there. I had them plugged into a thermostat so they only kicked on when it got above about 85.
Diatamaceous Earth won't hurt them at any age if they eat it. You must be careful due to the dust hazard though. I used to just throw some into my shavings and let the chicks stir it up in their houses. I still have a ton of it but the problem is putting it some where it won't create a dust storm and won't get wet.

Danz;
Thank you its our time building a chicken containment area as my huuby calls it. The ceiling fan was installed by the people who sold us the house and its always been here. So don't know if it will work or if we will need to replace it just gotta wait and see. what kind of sand should i get for their sand baths? Also having salad tonight baby spinach and baby green lettuce i think its boston its not Icebugr any issue giving a hand full to the chicks they are eating grit daily now? Thank you

Also while i know the pics aren't the easiest i have had a Bluff Orphents from the get go seem to have a low hanging belly. I don't know if this is something to be worried about none of the other chicks tummy hang this low so wanted to double check this chick is the biggest of the BO and is eating and pass stools fine.

I'm sure you needed an answer earlier on the lettuce. Most of my birds aren't real crazy about lettuce but if I give it I shred it fairly fine. As far as I know you can use any kind of sand other than silica sand or blasting sand. Quartz sand or even local sand is fine. Sandbox sand is a good choice cause it should be clean...not that it will stay that way! You can mix the diatomaceous earth with the sand as well if you want to start using it.
Just be sure that the fan is grounded so if it gets over heated it will trip a breaker if something goes wrong. You should be okay to use it.
It rained all day and there's still some coming down. The cool front came in and the temp started dropping about 3:30 this afternoon. It felt a lot colder than it actually was. That wind was really cold. At least the geese and ducks are enjoying it.

Danz,
Yep mine tried it but i don't know how much made it into their bellies but that's ok. Great so will pick up some playground for them tomorrow and will have hubby check the grounding on the fan. Yep the cold came through but we are still sitting at 48 degrees up here so who knows its Kansas weather. Any thoughts on if my low hanging chick belly is something to be worried about?
