So, it's time to talk about heat and ways to keep the feathered kids cool again. We have so many newbies it's probably a good idea to go through a big long list.

1. Hillbilly Airconditioning- Get gallon jugs, 2 liter bottles, etc. and fill them 90% and freeze with the tops off (for expansion). Cap and place in shady areas in which your birds already congregate. They'll snuggle up to them after they get over being all freaked out. Groups of these can be put in coops for overnight relief.

2. Iced Waterers- Get extra waterers and freeze them 75% full of water, upside-down. When solid, you fill the rest of the way, and the liquid water is on the side that drains out when you place them upright. The water will be cool all day long.

3. Misters- Found at Home Depot, &etc., these are fabulous for providing several degrees of cooling, and you can hook them up to a hose timer for the hottest part of the day. The birds will appreciate it after they adjust.

4. Foot Baths- Use old shallow vessels: Lasagne pans, under-bed plastic boxes, BIG planter bases. Fill with 4" water or less and leave in a shady spot for them to walk through. They'll also drink it, which will be fairly gross, but it's great to let them get their feet wet.

5. Cold Mash- I use cold yogurt, milk, juice, water- mix with their feed for a bit of a different cool feed.

6. Popsicles- Take any old fruit, odds and ends from your fridge that are too bad for humans, but not so bad for birds, and freeze these with water in an old juice carton. The cardboard peels off and the fruit and stuff is in the ice. This will occupy them for hours.

7. Frozen Veggies and Fruit- I get the mondo bags from Checkers and Costco and toss handful amounts out in the yard. They like most of it, but there are things they'll ignore. Had a yard peppered with frozen carrot cubes once...ick. Henry the Chocolate lab thought they were delicious.

I'll post more when I think of it.

No need to hide, that is just ozawkiebantams way, I hope you find what you are looking for.

REALLY !!!!!!!!
HOW WAS THAT RUDE?

I simply guided him to THE CORRECT LOCATION WHERE HIS QUESTION WOULD BE PERTINENT too what he was looking for.

You women make me laugh see If my guiding him to the wanted to buy section was rude what about this

Look I know none of you like me nor do I give two tail feathers. Renee is the one who has stated on your little Sunflower Thread that that is where you keep things PERTINENT buying, selling, trading feed and well here

Anyhow Back to The Pheasant thread I go http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee37/kadoo1975/Emotioncons/word.gif

Look I was not trying to be rude but everyone on here told river rat to ask you about game birds so he did, I don't know why you did not just say yes or no. This thread is about buying and selling and just talking about other things. Renee started the other thread because chicken questions where getting lost here. You went over there and tried to stir the pot. Everyone else seems to be able to go between the threads with no problems. Oh by the way renee never PM me about the new thread I just found it while reading other threads. You seem to be the only one with the problem with the new thread. I never said I didn't like you. If you go look at your predator thread about the cat I did defend your right to shoot the cat. I just don't always agree with what you post. I am sure you won't agree with everything everyone else post either. I can't see why we can't just get along and have a nice thread. Why does it have to be a pissing contest all the time.

P.S. I hope the hawk leaves your pigeons alone and they find their way home.

Mike, can you put up a perimeter fence with some hot wire and give them a bit of protection that way?

Those being good ideas do work. I actually have a Perimeter fence. But the girls just scractch and scratch and sooner or later open up a loose area. I make a "J" hook with heavy gadge wire and keep tucking it down. Just when I think I have it all tucked down I hear commotion and see this poor starving fox skipping accross the back garden with a chicken in his maw and a feather trail behind him.

Poore guy probably has lost his job due to government ineptness.

I know he is just making a living and I am glad he is not living under a bridge.

Just wish I could tell him the witch old hens to eat!
cool.png
Some of my hen raised hens know how to jump the fence and I have clipped thier some of their wings to keep them in. But then when he (Mr. Poor fox) pushes under he kills plenty so he can come back at night and collect the bouty. I keep trying to trap him so I can relocate him to larry ville!

I also leave notes on the bushes offering kibble and a truce! Guess he cant read! I am making some heavy water and spinning down some yellow cake now I think a small well placed nuclear device will take care of this!!!

Foxes have been around for a million years plus, because they do what they do well. I do live in the country to live with it. Currently in negotiations just hope its not as transparent as Pakistan! Other wise its special opps and a wounded rabbit call!!!!!

Chooks you mentioned earlier about an instant hot water heater,do you mean a tankless hot water heater? If so then I would like to suggest that you spend some time researching them. There are new models coming into the market every day it seems, keep in mind these things can get very expensive! There are also HE tank heaters on the market nowadays. Also consider if your water piping system is up to date, if not you won't be taking advantage of what these amazing units are capable of. Yes, I am a plumber and can answer any questions about plumbing issues.

I bought some inexpensive fans at Wally world and hung them from the rafters in my houses. They keep the air moving and vent out the hot air to some degree. It worked great last summer. Just one more thing to consider.

Mike, you never cease to crack me up- when I saw 'heavy water' I thought it was coincidence...then I saw 'yellow cake' and remembered your wicked chemistry mind and realized it was no mistake!!

Hilarious!

Yes, I did mean the tankless- I will be looking long and hard at the models out there, but welcome your advice!! I think I have some work for you around here! Care to barter?

Absolutely agree- I always forget to list the things that are most obvious because I'm thinking in terms of no electricity. I do use a fan in my home coop, and it's the choice seat right smack in front of it in the summer!

Definitely something I'll commit to memory!

Just want to point out that in my past experiance with blue bird trails and wildlife rehabilitation we always used 7-dust to remove mites. When Foxy (only surviver of Mr. Fox) was living on my kitchen table for 3 months, I noticed Mites in her feathers. Dusted her and no mites the next day. 7-dust is pretty environmentally friendly. Last about 2 weeks. Dust the next boxes so they get some daily when they hunker down to do their duty. Catch them off the roost and dust them. Its pretty safe. People rub this into dogs and cats every summer to reduce fleas and ticks. Organic is nice but unless your continous its only a reducer.
