I'm still not getting notices of posts here. I've been busy & haven't had a chance to check either. I've been trying to get all of my pens ready for winter. I still have a couple to do yet. I put up quite a few tarps & then plastic in some places so it takes me quite awhile to do. When I get that done tomorrow I have to get my main coop cleaned out completely & put all new shavings in. I do the deep litter method so I do it twice a year. I have to do it before the winter & then it will get done in spring. I usually get it done in Sept. but with vacation & then being sick I didn't. I'm running out of time though so I have to get on it.
As far as breeds of chickens that do well in winter here pretty much any of the breeds do OK. The ones with larger combs may get a little frostbite but usually the hens don't have as big of combs as the roosters do. My roosters are the ones who always get the frostbite. Last winter was really bad for that. I put up wind blocks with tarps or plastic on the north sides of pens & leave the south sides open for the most part. That still gives them protection from the wind but air circulation as well. I have a big long row of 3 pens that I have tarped the whole back side & the two ends & the front to the south is open. Chickens can usually do OK in the cold unless we get a really bad cold snap. I have my smaller bantam breeds in my breeder coop where they have an outside pen but sleep inside. It has air circulation at the top of the coop & there are 4 stalls in there for different breeds.
