Consolidated Kansas

I haven't been getting notifications of posts on here. I really haven't been ignoring anyone. We've had so much rain it's insane. About 12 inches in 3 days earlier this week. The yard is flooded and I've had some catastrophes because of it. Myrphy's law has been ruling around here as well. Everything possible has gone wrong.
@Stardustrose is there light in the coop? If it is fairly dark she may be confused. Otherwise yes she is probably just getting used to her new surroundings and feeling lonely. Time to look for a chicken friend for her.

I've been trying to get ready for cold weather but with all the rain it certainly has put a lot of projects on stand still.
Also I've noticed that people are more irritable and uncooperative than normal.
I got two pair of my dream chickens this week. I've been on a waiting list for over a year for them. They are Yamato Gunkeis. Mine are still young but starting to show adult feathers and such. They look like a dinosaur for sure.

OMG I can't wait to come out and see them :) Have your girls had their puppies yet?

The rain has been awful here and we did have flooding going on. Our yard was full of water, now we're dealing with mud. Well I went into the coop and gave her a gentle nudge out the door, then shut the door while I was outside working.....it worked. She's been a busy girl....lol. They are saying snow tomorrow with more rain tonight. :(

I'm glad to have a Kansas thread to go to. I have a question for my fellow Kansans. What are the best breeds for our crazy, extreme weather conditions? We have 2 chickens. A Barred Rock and a Road Island Red. We have had them for 2 years now and I noticed last winter that Thelma, the RIR, had a little frost bite on her comb but not real bad.

Icelandics, Barred Rock, EEs, Sillies, Chancellors, Brahmas, Speckled S

Thanks! I'll look Chancellors up. I hadn't heard of that one. We started with 2 RIR and 4 Barred Rock but they just started dying, one by one until we were left with these two. I think the other RIR was egg bound. I couldn't talk my husband into getting more to replace them. He said we have two strong one's, let's just stick with that. LOL P.S. I'm still working on him! :D

Yes they had them around a month ago. I had more problems with these litters than I've ever had before combined. The rain and the mud caused some casualties and then later some more problems. I only have one girl out of 8 puppies left. I had some people asking about her but don't know if they are still interested or not. They wanted one for a house dog and I almost felt like saying no but I know there are people out there that do have Pyrs as house pets. We've got a few more weeks to go before they are ready. I think I figured Starry's pups would be ready the 31st of October. Tori's a week later.

Nearly any chicken can do well in Kansas weather. Some of the heavier breeds need to have some shade in summer but otherwise handle it well. Birds with large combs often get frost bite so sometimes they aren't recommended. But if you manage your hen house right they will all do fine.
