I have ! . Although its not a real distinct gobble but you know it sounds real close though. I have also had them strut in front of me and I have seen a few with beards ... I dunno must be the Perry water

Man. I've only been drinking Perry water for four years and my voice is starting to get higher and I like pretty dresses all of a sudden. At least now I know why.

So I got the knee wall finished, but I need to figure out the angle for the roof (like what I did for the nest box). But I'm sure I can handle that now! I had to make a quick run to Lowes for a few more 2X4's and while I was there I took a bit to look thru the bird feeders for fun and found a really cool plastic feed container. I had looked at the dog food containers at Walmart- but they were too boxy and big to fit into my little compartment I've been making on the west side of the coop. I only bought the one plastic container to make sure it fit the space. Got it home, tested it out- it's perfect with room to spare! So, I'll run back and buy another one- it will hold 40 lbs. I figure with two, I can have 80 lbs on hand and less running around in the winter. It also has a pour spout on it when you start to get to the bottom of it with handles on the side to lift and tilt it over! It's actually really cool. The spout comes out of the side that has the lift up lid- so you can chose which one you want. ANyway, I'll post a picture of it tomorrow fitting into the little storage space I created. I love it!

Y'all make my day!

Daren, you make such a lovely daddy!
I had been out in the chicken house yesterday and when I got back in I had to take a shower to go to town. When I pulled my shirt off I noticed a nice pile of poo on my shirt, and in my hair. What a nice surprise the girls left me!
My internet was down this morning and I discovered how much I love sitting here reading all your post while I drink my coffee. Missed you guys and you didn't even know it!
My birds are loving the temps this morning. Happy Happy chickens!

So I got the little roof part on my nest box. OH MY GOSH- that took forever! I screwed it in and unscrewed it like - I don't know HOW many times! It took me 40 minutes and I gave up! I could not get it even and the clamps would not stay on, either. Finally took it off and cussed and came back inside. Then my mom came by and wanted to see what it looked like- talked her into holding up one side, got it on evenly the first try! I am at a point where I just need extra hands, I guess.

Going to take a picture of the little wall I did and the feed storage I found! Be back later! Going to see if I can make some angle cuts now for the roof of the storage area. Starting to get hot so I don't know how far I'll get.

Missed you too, Danz!

That's funny! Glad you're back on.

Okay here we go! I don't have a picture of the roof over the nest box, because it's not that interesting. I'll get a pic of it when I finish plywood on that side. This is a picture of the little storage area with the knee wall I made. I cut all the roof supports this morning and only put up two so far. They have been screwed down into the studs behind the plywood- so they are sturdy. I need to put up more plywood pieces to get the other roof braces up, but it's noon time, and I'm tired and hungry. The kids are LOVING this little coop- but they think it's a play house. I think they may actually be sad to see the new chickens go in it instead of get to play in it themselves. I might have to build them something later....

ETA: I put the plastic feed container in the space to show how perfectly it fits! It holds 40 lbs and I'm going to go get another one. Should be able to store entire bags of feed in there too- it really is larger than it seems! The space is going to have large double doors that swing open for easy access to tools and feed.

That looks great. I can't wait to start my own. Currently my chooks are dwelling in my garden shed which I've bedded for them and added some perches and such. But I really did use it to do, you know, garden stuff. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Car repairs should be finished this month (catching up on damage done by commuting for school and spending all of my money on school) and construction I think should begin in September.

I think I'm going to cheat and use the south wall of my garden shed as the fourth wall for the hen house.

But today the dang birds tried to follow me into my own house.

They were very disappointed when I shut the door.

Geez I wish I was closer. Your kids are cherubs! I'd so take them off your hands while you worked. I think you are right. They are going to hate giving that up to chickens. You'll be out in a snow storm building them a play house! "Momma" is probably a super hero right now.

Hawkeye, the kids are adorable!

Yes, I looks like mamma's next project will be a playhouse. The coop is looking so good and by the time it is finished the weather will be cooliing off some, so you will be ready to start another project while you are out there watching your chickies grow.

You'll be such an "expert" a playhouse will be no problem for you.

You go girl!

Oh, and about the turkeys... I had a hen with a beard one time, and I've seen hens strut, but I've never heard a hen gobble. Lots of yelping, though. Since there's hens with beards and hens that strut, I'm sure one could probably emit a gobble. I'm usually the one that does the calling for everyone around here during turkey season. I love to listen to the hens talking. When we had turkeys they would usually call some of the wild ones in. That was always fun to watch.

We had a peacock hen running with some of the wild turkeys here for a while. I haven't seen her for a while, so I hope she is still okay.
