So this afternoon was the afternoon from H.E...double hockey sticks.

I came home after picking the little ones up from preschool and all was well. We had lunch, and afterwards, I went to check on Seymore (turkey). She was GONE!!!! No turkey in sight! I totally panicked.. but realized after a wild run around the house, I didn't see any feathers anywhere. SO I figured she walked herself off the property and didn't get snagged. (i hoped) After 40 mins later, I wasn't too sure anymore. I kept calling her and after the second time out to check the horse barn again, I was walking back up to the house in near tears and I heard her calling to me. I turned around and she was trotting up thru the back pasture towards me. I sat down on the ground and kept calling her and she ran all the way up to me and into my lap. I hugged her and pet her and told her she was a baaaaaaad turkey.

The wind really kicked up today and it blew down a portion of the "gate" I have on the pen under my deck. It was just the top part- but enough for her to fly out. She was also very over heated and looked bad. Her wings were out from her body and dragging, and she was panting. I gave her fresh water, changed her food out and put the water mister back on her. Poor thing.

Not chicken/turkey related, but because the wind had come up so strong, it blew my pine tree over again. (it was uprooted last week in the storm and we had a piece of wood against it holding it up) Fortunately one of my errands this morning was buying root stimulater and ties for the tree, so I quickly pounded in two fence posts and staked it up and watered it down again. I've been keeping it really watered since it was damaged. So far, it looks fine. Crossing fingers.

I was going to wait until it cooled off later today to mess with it, though. SO instead, worked out there in 106 degree heat, nearly fainted and got sick. Then, after I completed the job and dragged myself inside, my hands hurt so bad. Took off my gloves and discovered I had blood blisters on the palms of my hands. Fun. Tonight they still look as red and swelled as they did earlier. I guess from using the pipe fence post driver really tore up my hands. I swear, I don't know how to have a boring day.

I'm so glad your turkey came back. I hope she does better with a heat today. but as I understand it it's supposed to be very hot again.

Hawkeye, I'll bet you were scared to death. I'm so glad you found your turkey. I wish my wild turkeys were tame like that.
We never got any of the rain they forecast a couple days ago and the wind blew but not as hard as predicted. I think we must be in some little pocket here that has it's own little unique weather pattern.
Sounds like your day was a bee-itch. I didn't feel good yesterday and actually spent my afternoon in bed. Must have been old lady syndrome or something. That normally happens when the weather turns cold and wet not when it gets hot.
I did get the stock tank pumped and vacuumed out, and refilled for the ducks. It had turned dark green and smelly. They were all in it this morning having a playful swim.
My DH is off for the next two weeks and said we would get some pens built. However he spent the entire day messing with his truck yesterday and isn't done, so I have a feeling this isn't going to go as planned. He is so slow anyway. If I could do all the stuff myself it would be done!

Hey, all! I miss you guys and being on here a lot...it's crazy season with the kids in school and me still finishing up the new facility. Can't say how excited I am about the heat returning!

Hope everyone is doing great, and I'm hoping things will slow down enough for us to think about a fall get-together.

If anyone is in need of a rooster, it's been the summer of roos for me and I have Orps, Black Copper Marans, a Blue Marans, and some odds and ends. I have a Lavender split Bantam Salmon Faverolles if anyone is interested in pursuing that project.

These will all go to freezer camp in 4 weeks if no takers.

Give us some more mild rain and temps, and all will be much better, right?

Danz, thanks! I'm def glad she is so tame that she would run up to me... but I sure wish she had done it sooner so I wouldn't have been out in the 106 degree heat searching for her. She loves being held and pet, she closes her eyes and makes kind of like a purring noise. Since she's an 'only child' it's probably why she is so tame. Sorry you weren't feeling good yesterday! That is a real bummer. I'm not feeling up to my usual perkiness this morning- sort of worn out. I bet it's the vacation and the hard work yesterday catching up with me. Didn't help I stayed up later than usual last night, too. I hope you get your pens done! OOhh, I totally hear you on getting them done faster without your DH. But it sure is easier with two hands for heavy lifting or just positioning. My DH is kind of the same way- he can spend a lot of time doing something- and I can take half that time and be done and moved on to the next project. And I will still do it nice, not half way. I hope he gets his truck fixed and can help you get 'er done. hehe!

Chooks, busy here too with school, but it sounds like I still have it easier than you. My oldest is in school all day- so i have a nice chunk of free time. The little ones go to preschool twice a week, so I do a lot of driving on those days and get nothing done at home. They only stay for 3 hours and so I usually stay in Wichita and hang out - which wastes time. I try to fit in errands and get things done, but often times it's just an inconvenience. But it would be insane to drive all the way back home since I don't live in Wichita.

Well, no work on the coop this morning. Too tired. Going to see if I can talk my DH into helping me put up that last plywood piece over the east wall tonight.

Patience has never been one of my virtues. If I want something; I want it now. I can't stand standing around doing nothing. And of course I am always mad at myself cause I never manage to complete anything in the amount of time I think it should take. My worst fault is I start doing one thing and notice something else that needs done, so I move to that etc etc. Results in a lot of unfinished projects. I really like staying on task, but I take on too many things to do so none seem to get completed. I have no common sense about when to stop taking on something new.

Oh, my gosh! This sounds TOO MUCH like me! Much to my dismay, I'm having to LEARN patience, like waiting till next year to get my poultry barn.

I think at my age and with arthritis setting in big time it's time for me to slow down in some respects and cut down on the number of projects and chores, but I DON'T WANT TO!

Waiting for help from hubby is another problem. He has his own set of projects that he is just as behind on as I am. I think he even has MORE unfinished projects than I do.

It sure feels great when one of them is completed, though! Hawkeye, I'm sure it will feel really good when you get your coop and run finished.

Well the way I see it my projects are more important than his! He! He! Most of his have been pending so long he doesn't have a clue where all the parts are to do them. Drives me nuts! If he dies I'll never be able to make heads or tails out of any of it.
I was craving sweets while ago. So I made some cookies. It beats being out in the heat. One of my favorite quick recipes especially if you have little kids around. My parents in their 80's love them too though.
1/2 c. corn syrup
1 c. Sugar
1/4 c. honey
Bring to a full rolling boil
Stir in 1 c peanut butter until melted
Then stir in 4 c. cocoa puffs (I buy the cheapest brand I can find)
Drop by spoonfuls on wax paper. Store in an air tight container once they are cool.

My favorite easy recipe is for peanut butter cookies. 1 c. of peanut butter, 1 c. of sugar, and 1 egg. It sounds ridiculous, but it works. You beat them together, put teaspoons of them on a baking sheet and criss-cross them with a fork. 10 minutes at 325 or 9 minutes at 350 (I've hear both). Yummy, and very easy. No, there really isn't any flour in them. Really.
