Consolidated Kansas

No poultry is allowed.

This is a small pet type event. Cage birds, and a few pocket pets (small mammals, like flying squirrels and guinea pigs)

If you are wanting to sell something you would need to talk to Mike the guy from the link. I think they still have room, but I'll warn you the spaces aren't cheap.

Welcome 6pakmama and all you other new people. Always great to have new people in the neighborhood. Got a couple of welsumer roos here if any one wants them for free.
Renee I figured out why the hen rejected her only chick; she went broody again. Another hen has at least 11 chicks cant seem to count them and is laying again too. She seems to love her kids. Crossing my fingers that the weather is changing to a cooler phase.

Wow- super broody season here, too- My banty Cochin is on round 2 and kicking them to the curb. She started laying again yesterday, so I expect her to be broody again, say....Saturday?

My barred EE is on her second clutch, and she hits 8 mos old tomorrow.

It's been one of those summers! I have a broody Buttercup, too, so this puts me at nest #9 ready to hatch in 2 weeks out of 18 hens.

My breeders are all acting as if they know nothing about this 'broody' business, and I'm delighted to keep it that way!

A dear friend has discovered that her Splash Orp pullet is actually a cockerel- he's from Gumpsgirl stock and is absolutely stunning, around 14 weeks old. If anyone knows someone who could give him a good home, let me know? She's right on campus and it's not going over so well in the neighborhood now that he's finding his bellowing voice.

Sorry we still haven't made it out. Every time so far has conflicted with a fair and soon will be football games on Saturdays. Thanks for keeping us updated though or else I'd forget all about it should a free Sat AM crop up. Do you all keep it up year round? We've got a lot more Saturdays open through the Spring.

Hi Fellow Kansans!! I am in Richmond, so not far from several of you. I am new to BYC as of last night and today I am just thrilled to find this Kansas thread! I started my flock in April and after the neighbors dog got in and killed all but 4 of my 22 four wk old girls I restocked and now have 26 girls and a dude. I named him Rusty (a partridge cochin) but my 8 yr old granddaughter came over anxious to see the "Little Dude" so it stuck. My girls consist of 5 barred rocks, 5 blk sex links, 3 buff orps, 8 RIR, 4 New Hamp reds, and 1 blk australorp. I have about 6 with full red combs and waddles and not sure what to expect/look for next. Someone please point me to a fount of info on squatting etc etc etc. I have my happy dance all ready for that first egg!!!

How do you clean your newly laid eggs? Do any of you use a wash like I've heard about? When I've gotten fresh for the nest eggs from a friend I have just rinsed them under the faucet and let them dry.

So glad to be in company of other Kansas chicken lovers!

We're in Lawrence, with lots of Orps (different colors) Easter Eggers, Lakenvelders, Marans, and tons more.

If they squat when you reach for them, you'll have an egg inside of 3 weeks. Put a couple of golf balls in each nest to show them where to go- it helps. They get noisy, too, sometimes. For the most part, mine get noisy as if they're telling the other girls to get off of their nest!

I don't wash eggs unless they are poopy, and I only do that if I'm selling the eggs for eating- not hatching.

I don't wash them until right before I package them up, either, as they will have to be refrigerated once they are washed, and I prefer to keep them out so they don't take up so much room in there.

Hi, all!

I just had someone contact me who is interested in a couple of POL pullets of any old kind for her boss for a present. They're here in Lawrence, and I told them going price for that sort of age can be as high as $20 or more (that's what I get for non-hatchery birds) so she understands that.

Is anyone coming up for the caged bird show Saturday who would be interested in selling her a couple of pullets?
