Consolidated Kansas

I have been getting 2 eggs a day regularly - love having enough to give them to people! Funny th ing is - have had 2 double yolkers - both were in the batches I gave away!

Lost my lil small hen though - told the 3 year old that she is visiting friends... but I"m thinking that if I check the neighbors dog - there are some dog turds w/feathers..

Think she was a bantam sized - I prefer full sized - but my kid loved the lil eggs so I'll have to get another few lil ones... I have lots of space. Funny thing - when I was working on my coop - I cleaned out and filled the wading pool for my kid to play in - soon she had a chicken, dog, and the kid all playing in the pool ... no camera

Okay - roosters aren't as dumb as they act sometimes... mine was being a good boy all week - then he started getting agressive when my eldest visited - she likes to hold the hens - and she can grab him and hold him - so he doesnt trust her... so he got a lil "cocky" and puffed up like he was going to get my legs... i yelled NO - and he actually stopped ... looked up at me ... thought he'd try again - I yelled at him again... and I think he really does know that word... he stopped and walked away... I still don't turn my back on him th ough! I actually have a little dog run in there (the dog used to be put in there du ring the day until I knew he wouldnt hurt the chicks) - so I just toss the boys in it while I'm working... or when they act up. Dare I dream that he will one day actually be a good boy?

Hello form Richmond, KS. I have lived in Kansas for over 41 yrs now, came here as a child bride. lol I'm a CA transplant who loves Kansas!
I'm so happy to have come upon this thread! I've been wondering how to find out who all is from Ks but now I don't have to. I am new to chicken raising. I got them for the eggs never imagining it's be so much fun and so soothing to care for a flock of chickens. It can be heartbreaking too, as I lost most of my first bunch to the neighbor's mean dog. Now I am doing the waiting thing, anxious for that first egg along with soo many others. I haven't read all the pages of this thread but so far found one poster who is only around 20 or so miles from me in Wellsville. Hey, I hear you have a pretty goo bbq joint in Wellsville! Hoping to get over there for lunch after church soon.

Thanks for creating this thread. Now, what''s the easiest way to get right to it to stay up on the posts? I don't want to have to search it out all the time.

Carol

Welcome CarolAnn! I am in Baldwin, but grew up down the road from Richmond in Garnett! I love BYC and this thread - it is a great way to keep up with what is going on in the area.

Speaking of upcoming events, who is going to Poultry swap/sale in Gardner?

Hey, Carolann,
I'm a little further East, in Lacygne. Welcome to the forum!

Hey CarolAnn welcome to the thread. KS people are great. Gardner Auction not far from you on the 18th many of us will be there. Sending my Welsumer roos to the soup pot tomorrow. Thank God for my friend Patty I dont want to do it my self.
Hugs to all!

I'll put it on the calendar. Told hubby about it ans he said "but that's the cars show here". Big car show in Ottawa the 18 and 19th. They cruise Main St Saturday night. I said "well I went to the car show with you last year so you can go to the chicken thing with me this year". The look on his face, so funny. Those of you/us who Do go ought to wear something with BYC on it and user name. Just a thought.
I decorate cakes and got to meet a bunch of ladies from a cake site we belong to at a big meeting once.

***I can't wait to see what a difference honest to goodness fresh eggs will make in my cakes/baking!!

Try some duck eggs. I hear they are super great for baking. They are sure good for eating.

Im a California transplant too-dad worked at GM fremont until it closed so we got moved here so he could work at Fairfax back in 1982. Love Kansas but hate winter lol. Ive lived all over DG county Baldwin City to Lawrence and I have a small plot of land in Mound City so Im all over. If you are into plants go down to Arnolds Greenhouse south of you in Leroy-great people and lots of fun-all there fall stuff is going on now, hope I can make one more trip down there. Also there is a fantastic BBQ in this little tiny bar in Williamsburg called Guy and Mae's Tavern, pretty famous so I would highly recommend it and then there is this really cool country bar with bull riding right in, hay rides during Christmas lights time through all the property-I know it changed names recently and I cant find it right now but Im pretty sure it has the name something"Ranch"-it was a family type place with regular big beef dinners etc then turns to more of a bar at night. Wow lots of fun country stuff down your way-wish I could get my house sold and move back that direction.

CarolAnn I bet you could go to the Auction in the morning and get back in time for the car show. I am betting the Auction opens at about 7am for viewing.
