Danz, I hadn't heard that story, so you GOT me. I was sniffing away tears. What a beautiful story, and reminds me of what really matters. I need a lot of reminding since I'm having a tough time with the possibility of moving. I sure hope you feel better. Maybe you should just plug in your heating pad and take it easy for a day or two and rest up.

Ivy, sounds like your neck of the woods is a heck of a lot worse than where I'm at. Of course, I'm really down south-- closer to Oklahoma. We don't really see much snow at all. Maybe you just need to come down this way? Of course, the SEK area is really beautiful, too. We lived in McCune for a while-- that's near Parsons. I used to get my childhood Santa pictures taken at the Pittsburg mall. Good times. That is where my dad's farm is. (around Girard)

Did a lot of running around today and am finally home. TIRED. I have to pick up my oldest at the bus stop now. Sigh.

I watch the weather a lot. It seems like where Ivy lives there is a lot more winter storms and a lot more rain than the rest of us get.
But then the Wichita area seems to be hit with every major thunderstorm and torrential rain storms. SE Kansas seems to have a lot milder climate but because it is slightly warmer they tend to get more ice and less snow. And so on.
It was a nice day out there for as cool as it is. I am dreading more snow. I can't believe how sick I am of winter already.

Well, I had a bank disaster this summer as well. I ended up closing my business account with them, and they were none too happy. I went in person and talked to them about it and told them why I was doing it. The account had to have $200, and i was well above that, but they kept charging me for other stuff that I had NO clue about until I got my statement. I got all that money refunded back to me (because I threw a fit and they said it was a computer error--ack!) and closed it out and moved it. I'm with you-- they don't need to be doing stupid stuff like that. I can't believe they'd charge you ANYthing for a savings account. I guess when you find a new bank, be sure to specifically ask them about maintenence fees and service fees on your money. I'll never bank with anyone wanting to CHARGE me for keeping my money with them.

I already have several accounts in the bank here. What irks me is when I opened that savings it was because I was a broke single Mom and I needed a place to deposit money so I could come up with big payments like insurance and house taxes. I can't verify but when I opened it I think the minimum was $500 and if you got below that, the fee was $2. She said I would have been told that I had to have $10,000 in it when I opened it. But I am sure that some 25 years ago I didn't have $1000 to my name, let alone $10,000. And don't you think a good bank would have called and said "Hey your balance is low." My old bank got bought out by Emprise many years ago and I'll bet it changed then and they never notified me.
They did this to me once before. I had a business account. At that time I did almost all my business from Sept to December, so there were no transactions going on. I got a certain percentage deducted for inactivity. Again it took me a couple months to realize it but it was a rip. I just closed the account cause I wasn't using it much any way. I do most of my banking on line and I rarely look at the statements. I just file them. I guess maybe I should start. I only kept this account open because it is in Council Grove. I am selling my house up there and until the deed is switched over I wanted to have funds close if I needed them.
Before they got bought out I could just call my banker from a car lot and say I wanted to buy a car and hadn't settled on a final price for it. He'd say write the check and we'll cover it. That was all it took to get a loan. Times have changed. No more small town friendly banks!

Danz, I agree banks have changed so much & it's not for the good of the customer, that's for sure. I have had some problems with certain ones over the years. I had somebody get my information online & buy porn with it. When I went to the bank to find out about he charges they treated me like I was the criminal & made me call the companies right there in the bank & tell them I didn't make the charges. My account was overdrawn due to the charges that I didn't make & they made me pay those. I had to borrow money from my DH to pay those stupid bank charges. When it was all done I closed by account & hubby did too & we went elsewhere to bank. If they changed things & didn't notify you I would be protesting the charges if I were you.

Well I got DH to go out with me before he went to work & look at my automatic pop door because it wasn't opening. We had to take off the metal cover over the motor & found out the string that pulls the door up had just come off of the screw it hooks to. They make those things with the smallest little thread almost. At any rate it was fairly easy to get it back on after taking about 10 screws out of the cover, so now it works again. I'm glad it was something easy to fix at least. The chickens were so happy to be able to use their door again, they were chattering about it when they came in. I had problems with that silly Lakenvelder hen again tonight. I don't know why she insists on being the very last one into the coop at night & she doesn't want me within 20 feet of her. I have to prop the door open & then go far enough away that she doesn't feel threatened before she will run around the coop & into the run. None of my other chickens act like those two, it's so frustrating. Maybe if they were laying me nice white eggs it might be worth the aggravation, but they're not laying yet.

I agree with everyone else, IVY, you need to move down south further, closer to your sister. It's not as bad down this way as it is I guess up where you are. We still get the cold, but probably not as bad & not so much snow. We do have our share of ice at times though.

Sry I havn't been around I've been busy with work any my wifes been on the computer when I'm around. Danz I've been getting a little nervous about the shifty information and happenings lately. After just a touch of reading I've heard that banks are no longer "good" but to go with credit unions instead. I've go 2 checking accounts with under $20 in each, never been offered a loan and was even told by a banker to over draft my account by $300 to help buy a used car because he couldn't approve that loan. I later found that they were trying to make a profit while making my financial history look worse. All of the bank rates and charges have been going up left and right and I read where the bank practices and policies are partially at fault for the economy especailly the bigger corperate bank. I live on the north end of fort riley and travel all the way around it doing my day to day but suddenly the last 3 months there have been choppers EVERY WHERE 24/7 I don't know if there's something to be worried about or not but it all has me a little uneasy. I don't know what to think about our current state but I hope another large down fall isn't in the making. Sorry to sound paranoid and I hope I didn't get out of line. I've missed talking to you all and hope all is well.

ETA: I've been doing mostly cash business for the last 2 years anyway (living in such rural areas) and only have a bank account so I can put money in to use online if I need to and for my direct withdraw acounts, I opened up the second account because the bank was closer and who my paychecks are written on for ease of cashing them, but after the little stunt they pulled, telling me to overdraw as an alternative to a loan, I just put a dollar in to keep it open for check cashing privliges.

Trish-Sorry those lakies have turned out to be such a pain for you. They are flightier than the other birds I have, but my older hens are not near as flighty as the younger ones. Today I was in the coop, and I went back under the roost for an egg one of the leghorns had laid in the shavings. When I stood back up after picking up the egg I was face to face with one of my older lakenvelder hens. She was only about 6" from my face. She just looked at me and sat there on the roost. I said, 'OH! Hello!" She didn't even acknowledge my greeting.

The temp is a little warmer tonight, probably because of the cloud cover, but we also received another "covering." This one is of snow. The ground is pretty much covered. At least it isn't a lot of snow. There's probably less than 1 inch in accumulation. Seems like the closer I got to home, the more snow there was.

Well, call me paranoid too, then. No one believes me when I say I think there is something happening or might be going down. Just a smart tip about emergency management-- I think everyone should have a couple months of food rations stored up in cans, water, dry goods and things that won't go bad for a few years. (cans of ravoli is great--has meat in it) Even if nothing happens politically, you'll be set for being snowed in, a tornado, or a blackout. BTW, we might start having rolling blackouts, too. The nuclear companies are having some restrictions put upon them that won't allow for a constant grid use. So, we'll see!

I can't believe you have SNOW again!! WOW! We never get snow down here! We get rain and ice, and that's about it. We do have snow from time to time. But it is going to get colder today. I hate winter. I really do.
