Consolidated Kansas

Ugh, what a nasty day! We're getting a lake in our driveway & the dog run & chicken run roofs are full of water. I haven't let either the pups or chickens out of their runs today, it's just too nasty & I don't think they need to be out in this weather. None of them are happy with me, but at least they are dry & warm. I haven't gone out to collect eggs yet, I think I'll wait until afternoon when I have to go out & feed the pups anyway. It's cold & the eggs aren't going to spoil, so they'll keep. This weather just makes me want to curl up in bed with a nice book & stay there. I may just do that after DH goes to work. I have things I need to be doing, but this weather doesn't make me feel productive at all, my joints are hurting & it's do dark & dreary. So far the weather service is saying we're only supposed to get 1-2 inches of snow here, I sure hope they're right & that it doesn't stay. It looks like DH is going to have to drive to OKC to get my son for Christmas so he can come, so we all need to pray that the weather doesn't get too bad & he can't go. He just got a new job a week ago & won't get paid for 3 more weeks, so he doesn't have the money to drive here. His daughter has been upset with him, so he needs to get here so he can spend Christmas with her. You can't really explain to a 7 year old that well why you can't afford to come see her at Christmas.

I just did my shopping on line. To heck with driving. I guess this is going to be one of those' "Sorry folks, this is the best I could do." years.
I just couldn't see getting out in this weather to look for better options. My credit card is going to be a mess! Time to sell some birds!!!
The yard is a lake. I really need to get out there and get things under control.
Ivy do you want to come wrap my presents? I haven't done any of them.
I have several things ordered that should be here and aren't. It makes me very nervous. I still haven't purchased anything for my daughter and granddaughters in Colorado. I think I'll just send each of them some money to spend.

Well I' ve been luck this afternoon, got everything wrapped but one. That is not going to be a big deal. We didn't spend as much for Christ-mas this year, all the kids are getting harder to buy for. If they said they wanted something that is what they are going to get.

I still need to find something for DH. Since we won't have our Acedemy store back in Joplin until Jan. 27, I am having a terrible time finding something for him.

Wally world only carries so much in hunting and fishin. I need more than what they offer to find him something. Guess I could buy him anouther gun.

Oh well, glad we are in the southeast, if we get any snow, it won't be much. One of my rosecombs is sure busy out there in the garage, maybe going to start laying again. I can't wait!

Hey you! What's up? Getting wet, are ya? We are dry so far, but it looks like we will get some later. I just hope there isn't too much ice. Enjoying your first day off work for the Chirstmas season? It's my day off, but I feel like I haven't gotten much done. I had two days at work that were two of the worst since I've worked there.

I still haven't been out to feed and water. I slept a little late. I think I just needed the extra sleep to catch up from the stress. I usually never get more than about 4 hours, but I certainly slept more than that today.

I'm getting ready to put some eggs in the incubator. I hope I don't regret this. I don't really have good winter chick raising facilities.

It's been raining here all day. And if this was snow we'd have at least a foot and a half. The temp is still above freezing but the rain keeps coming down. I finally got my back hallway cleaned. Sure wish it would stay that way. But DH just got up to get ready for work so I'll bet in the next 10 minutes there is mud tracked in again.
Chooks, if you are lurking, I hatched out 7 button quail chicks today. Put them in a bin and the first thing they all did was manage to get in the quail waterer and get totally soaked and chilled. I put them back in the incubator to dry and just took them out to try it again. How can they be so dumb???
Maybe tomorrow I'll go the basement and dig out the wrapping paper. I still like wrapping gifts. (Well I don't particularly like doing it... but I like to have them wrapped.) It just seems wrong to buy those gift bags and not to try to make things look nice. Maybe I'm just too cheap and can't see spending the money for them.
My silly chickens have been out in this rain all day. WHY????? Here I am fighting to get rid of colds and they are out getting soaked.

HEY HAWKEYE- I have a question for you. How many people does Boeing employ in Wichita? How much is this going to hurt the economy in Wichita? What affect do you think it will have on the economy, housing, etc. for the area?

The reason I ask is that DH and I have been exploring geographic areas trying to decide where we want to move. We want to stay rural with little to no chance of development around us, but we also want to be within a reasonable distance of a larger city. The area down that way was one of the ones I was considering.

We aren't going to be doing anything for probably about a year, but we want to be well prepared when the time comes.

It's been raining here all day also, it's sloggy out there. I had to go out & feed the puppies this evening & they were not at all happy with me that I hadn't let them out of the run today. I guess I'll have to let them out tomorrow even if it's snowing because I know they need some exercise. I know it wouldn't have hurt them & they wouldn't have minded being wet all day, but I hate to see them all wet & muddy all day long. They won't go in until the evening when they have to because I shut them in at night. The rooster just stood out there in the run & yelled at me all day long. I will have to let them out tomorrow too or they will be really mad at me. I went out & collected eggs & then managed to break 2 before I got them in the house, they were in my coat pockets, ick what a mess. I was trying to carry some wood in for the stove & smashed them. I had to dump water out of the tarps over the chicken & dog runs so they wouldn't bend the tops any further in. The one over the dog run is already bent from having so much water in it before I managed to get a board in the middle to give it some support. I hope it stops raining soon or our road will be a disaster. Nobody knows how to maintain roads any more, so they just grade all the gravel off & push it into the ditches until they're all filled up & then there is nowhere for the water to go. It just sits on the road & makes a bog there. That's what happened a couple of years ago & the road washed out in two places. We couldn't get to our house for days. They had to bring in rock & build the road back up, but since then have graded it all down again.

IVY, I'm not Hawkeye, but I can answer also because I'm originally from Wichita & lived in Derby for 23 years before I moved here. I can't speak to the number employed at Boeing any more because I have nobody working there now.(My late husband worked there for years.) But a big portion of Boeing in Wichita was sold to Spirit Aerosystems, so only a small part of the plant is Boeing now. It's not the only airplane company in Wichita either, there are several. It definitely would impact Wichita some if Boeing leaves, but there are still a lot of companies other than Boeing that would still be there & the air force base also. Plus Wichita has a population of approx. 350,000 plus the surrounding towns included in the population of the metro area. It's just sad that Boeing is wanting to leave Wichita because they have been there for so long. They have had an agreement with the city of Wichita to keep jobs here & if they leave they will be backing out on their promise. I guess they wouldn't be the first company to do that, Hawker-Beechcraft also has an agreement with the city, but has been laying people off lately. Anyway, Hawkeye can probably give you more numbers as far as current employees & such, but Wichita will go on with or without Boeing. I just wish all of these companies would wake up to what they're doing to this country & the economy though. My DH works for GE & they opened a plant in Brazil & they get a lot of the work that used to be done here now. I really worry about what people in this country will do when all of the best jobs are in other countries.
