Consolidated Kansas

Happy new year everyone! I'm headed to KCMO in the morning to celebrate new years and a late christmas at my MILs for the weekend. Why she decided to move 120 miles away from family a month after her first grandchild was born, I will never know.

Maybe you will be hauling those kids next year, Sis!

Lol don't I wish! She is bound and determined to homeschool those boys. Might have ask you to "watch out" for them though.

Interesting about the rental market. I bet it's still cheaper than here. (renting a 3 bedroom house here would be anywhere from $800-1200+) a month--depending on location within the city). The more expensive-- the less likely you are to be in a bad area, and we have baaaaaaaad areas in town filled with gangs, homeless, and just dangerous areas. My father in law is a landlord. He recently sold off about 120 properties because he was "retiring". Although, he kept around 6 of his best properties to help subsidize his retirement. One of those properties is a really beautiful 4 story Victorian that has several apartments in it. He only rents them out for $250 a month because they are small and have one bed/bath. But they are so charming. The downside, it's close to an area that isn't desirable, but mostly safe. That drives the price down. I do know that the homes for sale in Pittsburg and the surrounding area are much cheaper than here. (a LOT cheaper!) We looked at a few houses for sale yesterday (my parents are interested) and they are BIG homes built with brick and stone, couple of fireplaces, two story, and impressive looking... for half what they'd be here! It would be so nice to live there if they had software companies or aerospace down that way.

But it would certainly be a place you could retire to and cut costs. I really love the Pittsburg and Girard areas. Gorgeous there! My dad's parents had a house on Quincy street back a long time ago-- they lived in it a while and then rented it out for years and years.

Anyway, yesterday was really fun, my brother came down, and we ran into 3 of our cousins down there. Totally unexpected! They were in town, and we saw them and it turned into a bit of a reunion. We visited my uncle-- which is their dad, and then we all went out to Chicken Annies in Girard. Before that, we ate at Harry's cafe in Pittsburg for lunch and then went to the antique mall and did a bit of site seeing (the houses for sale) and then that is when we ran into our cousins. The drive back was nice, but that road back to Wichita sure is dark and windy. You don't really notice it, until it's pitch dark and you can't see around the bends!

That expensive housing market in Wichita may change a little if Boeing moves on. Maybe it's good your father in law sold off some properties when he did.

Yes, I like Pittsburg. I like the area around there. Where I move will depend on where I can get a job. We won't be buying in town, though. We want a minimum of 80 acres. We love to hunt and fish, so it's going to be a challenge to find everything we need in one spot. Since DH and I are getting older, we don't want to start over building a home. It's just too much work at our age. We want a place with a shop, a barn, a place for chickens, hunting, fishing lots of trees and a moderate sized but well built home. One thing about the Pittsburg area, they've got lots of trees and good hunting and fishing areas.

Sometime in the next month I'm going to see about getting my bad knee replaced. I want to get that done and over with before I think about the move. Right now it's hard to even walk out to take care of my birds... speaking of which, I am going to clean some cages today. One seemed wet yesterday. I think the little hen in the pen above it is such an agressive eater and drinker that she splashes and spills on the tenents in the lower apartment.

She is a beautiful little silver duckwing old english. She is dives into her food and water like it will be her last meal.

Maybe I'll get some pictures taken today.... no promises on that, but I need to get some recent ones.

I have a busy day planned. I have to do my normal stuff, plus make a couple pies to take for the family get together tomorrow. I will be so glad when it is over. Christmas has been kind of a drag this year and I just want to get back on track. I so hope next year is better. Maybe it will be a good chicken year and I'll save some money instead of spending it all on new equipment. That would be nice.
I got to thinking last night. I bought those cookie tins but within the year we won't be able to buy an incandescent light bulb. I wonder if that will extend to heat lamps and things like that? How are we going to use our cookie tin heaters if we can't buy the bulbs for them? I guess I had better stock up on light bulbs this year for things like that.
Does anyone know if this new law is going to end the production of heat lamps? That could be deadly to the home chick industry. Kind of put panic in me. I cna't afford to buy a bunch of individual chick heaters to keep chicks warm. I also have many chandeliers that take a smaller bulb and the compact fluorescent bulbs to replace them are ridiculous in price. And what about those that take specialty halogen bulbs? I wonder if I am going to have to change all my light fixtures?

Danz-I believe that law got struck down and will not go into effect. I could be wrong, but that was the last I heard from my DH who keeps up on that stuff better than I do.

Could be, depends on their ages ya know!

Here's an article about the light bulbs. It looks like you will still be able to get some, but as time goes on they are going to get more and more hard to find. My DH is a manufacturing engineer, and understands well what it takes to switch over manufacturing tooling and processes, so the new ones will be the way of the world eventually. I can't help but think, however, that some of your "specialty" bulbs will remain in production, such as the heat lamps we use for our brooders. There isn't a new flourescent one that can replace that as far as I know, so as long as there is still a demand for it they should be available. It will be your regular household bulbs that get replaced. It is possible, however, that some manufacturers will still have the ability to produce the old style, and as long as there is a demand for some they may still be available.

A lot of that is just my own mind rambling on the subject.
