no doubt, right?! Those are some of the prettiest birds I've seen!! I may be a chicken girl, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate them! Sorely tempting, too!!! I like the cute little bobs!

Hi Everyone!

Hawkeye-We will keep our fingers crossed for good news with Boeing. They sure haven't given much for hope, though, have they? Going to Chicken Annie's, huh? That's one place I haven't eaten when I've been down visiting my sister. The Ft. Scott, Pittsburg and Joplin areas are some I'm considering for when we eventually move.

Daren-Beautiful birds. I had some red golden pheasants before. They are beautiful. That was back when I lived at Solomon and we had a MUCH bigger poultry facility. Unfortunately I had a peacock that BEHEADED my red golden pheasant!

Danz-I put my guess in for 8 pups. That's my lucky number. If she has any that look like my old dog, Buddy,I will claim it right away! Do you have any idea what kind of hatch rate you get with your broody seramas? I have one broody hen, and I don't know how many eggs she has under her, but I don't think she is in a very good spot. There just isn't much for nesting material where she is behind the nest. It seems like it would be cold. I guess I will just hope for the best.

Chooks-I have the same problem with my birds not wanting to eat the "fines" that is in their feed. I use a feed mill mix. It seems they only eat it if I let them go without food for a day or so. I guess then they get hungry enough they go ahead and eat it. In my chicken tractor the wind can blow so bad it blows the feed right out of the pan. For them I give them the feed and then mix some water in it so it's a wet mash. They eat every bit of it that way. No waste. I wish it was as easy to do it that way for all the pens, but a wet mash just doesn't work very well in a self feeder!

Given those 3 choices for towns... I'd choose Pittsburg! Definitely not Joplin.. although it's fun to visit. But Pittsburg has a really great community and they have a lot of fun things to do there. It is a college town, so there are always interesting things going on to try to draw in students and families alike! I'm about ready to leave, just waiting on my parents to get here.

I got two of the Sweeter Heaters last summer in anticipation of the cold this winter (hasn't been nearly as bad as last, though). My roosts are at right angles to each other, so I put one over each roost. They are plugged into a thermocube (on at 20 off at 30) and have only come on a couple of times. I can tell in the morning whether the heater is on because when it is, they stay on the roost rather than greeting me when I go in the coop to scoop overnight poop, and they don't go out the door when it opens.

I'm really pleased with the way they work. It is a very soft, even heat rather than just warm in one area. So far I like them a lot.

I had my first spinal surgery in Joplin. I loved that town, but then it is a whole new town now. I like the trees around the area and everyone seemed so friendly. There was some really great eating places there as well as a not so rediculous big mall. Pittsburg is ok but there is a lot less trees it seems in that area. I don't understand it as it is so close.
Ft. Scott has old time charm and is kind of the gateway to a lot of things in Missouri. I think at this point I would have to choose the Ft. Scott area if the cost of living permits it.
I discovered something in desperation. I had a WCB bantam polish roo that got down and wasn't eating or drinking. The other birds were starting to pick at him. I brought him in and started medicating him thinking he wouldn't last the night. He was very congested and had that upside down brain thing going on. I started him on Vit E and VetRX and dropper fed him sugar water. He still wasn't doing very well. He was gasping for air and couldn't drink well because he couldn't breath. So in desperation I used my spare little nose Syringe you use to clean baby noses and salt water like I do for my own sinuses, and syringed out his nose. Within 20 minutes he was drinking sugar water like it was going out of style, and started eating. The next morning he was back at acting like a spaz and his nose was plugged again. I gave him another dose of Vit E and then syringed his nose again. I figured if it works for my chronic sinus infections it couldn't hurt. Well he is up and crowing and acting perfectly normal for two days in a row now. Point in case. Getting back to nature. If you get colds, take your birds and flush their nose cavities out with warm salt water. It works wonders and seems to clear the cold. A cost free natural solution for these sick birds.
Yeah Hawkeye my hand is getting worse. I've got a little infection on one side and it is getting more sore. I keep hurting myself and getting it dirty. We've got to go to Emporia today so I'm going to try to pick up some vet wrap and try that to wrap it. I just can't seem to feed and water the birds without getting it wet and dirty. I can't stand to put a glove over it cause it is too tender.
DH decided we should just meet my son, DIL, and granddaughter in Emporia and take them out to eat then go to Walmart and buy them some groceries or something. He decided it was too much to handle for me to try to clean and baby proof the house. I think it was more a thing that he didn't want to put up with my son for that long. (This is my son that hasn't grasped the concept of working for a living and lives to play video games.) They DO NOT get along at all, nor do my other kids get along with him. My granddaughter is bright and adorable. It seems wrong that I can't share her with her aunts and uncles. I hope when she gets a little older I can keep her for a few days at a time and introduce her to the rest of the family. I'm not sure how we are going to let her open her presents. It would be quite a load to take in the restaurant. If I didn't need that trip to Emporia to get feed and stuff I would rather try to have them here. At any rate it will be a full day.
My neighbor came over yesterday and worked all day on my chicken trailer. I went out and worked during the afternoon but it about killed me. I could barely move come evening. He got both rooms cleared out and got the floor scraped in one room. I need to do a final clean and then get the floor waterproofed. I had purchased tile to put on it but at this point I am wondering if I could just seal it some way to keep moisture from the wood. I'm afraid the tile won't stay stuck down and then I'll have a worse mess. Once I figure out what to do with the floors I can start building runs. I still need DH to pour the pillars to set it on which hasn't gotten done.

Hi Everyone, I missed you all, I didn't get a chance to keep up well while we were gone. It was an all right trip, just tiring riding in the car 5 hrs both directions. We got back about 12:30 last night. On the drive back home last night we kept seeing owls, there were more of them than I have ever seen at one time before. The last one flew right in front of our car & was trying to carry a rabbit bigger than it could fly with, so we had to slow down to avoid hitting it.

Ozawkie, you have beautiful birds! I especially like those quail. We have wild quail around here on our property & I like hearing them call.

Danz, I hope you can get your hand healed up without getting a major infection, that can get nasty. I think you need to keep it covered when you're out taking care of your birds. I know gloves hurt it, but some kind of cover to keep the dirt out, maybe the vet wrap would work while you're out there & then change it when you come in. That's so exciting about your dog having pups, I can't wait to see pics of them!

Hawkeye, I hope for your sake you don't have to move. Have a good & safe trip & have fun!

IVY, that's nice that your sons get along so well & that you got to spend some time with them at the holidays. I really missed seeing my son this year for Christmas. We go to Joplin quite a bit on our way back & forth to see DH's family. It's still pretty sad there due to the tornado they had, it will take a very long time to heal the scars left from that. I hope we can find some way to get my rooster here, I can't wait to see him. Send me some pics soon OK?

The pups & my chickens were very glad to see me this morning & get out of their runs, they all came flying out of there like they were on fire. I'm pretty sure at least one of my Ameraucanas is laying. I found an egg this morning on the floor of the coop, I don't know why two of them decided to use the floor instead of their nests. It's not like they don't have enough nests to share.

I will have to keep the salt water flush in mind in case I ever need it. Please take care of your hands. Maybe you should see the Dr. for some antibiotics. I would be afraid to cause to much damage to my hands because they are something I can't do without. I think you will be having 10 puppies. I can't use my favorite number because it is too large so I'm gonna say 10.

My stupid phone has rang all day. I'm trying to get things done so we can get to Emporia. I'm just not a phone person. I want to say what I need to say and get off. Grrr! I definitely like the internet cause I can drop in and get my news, and then go about my business. Maybe I'm just too much of a hermit!
The birds all were doing well this morning so that is an improvement. I've still got one rooster with a bad cold but the rest seem to be over it all for the most part. I really do need to downsize. I am going through over 100 pounds of feed a day now !
