But what do you mean by "heated buckets"??

I buy heated horse/livestock buckets for my ducks/geese and heated dog bowls for the chickens (I only have 1 large heated horse bucket left from last year).

I never had much luck with the plastic heated poultry fountains - either hard to get the lid on & off or they always broke easily- especially the amount of money they are.
The heated metal bases/fountains cost a fortune and if your like me having a bunch of difference pens and areas for poultry it's hard to invest so much. So this year I was going to invest in heated dog bowls for my chickens. I just worry about my fowl that has larger wattles because I don't wan't them to get frostbitten when they drink the water out of the bowl.

Anyone else have any good ideas on heated waterer's for the frozen season coming up in this Kansas weather?

Rees Fruit Farm sells hot spiced cider.

Thanks for that link. Sounds like a nice place!! I was referring to having hot cider at the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin. If there's anyone there selling it I haven't found them yet. I like to go to the Louisburg Cider Mill but might have to go check out the Rees Fruit Farm sometime too.

Was just at the Louisburg Cider Mill last Friday. Got some yummy cider donuts and cider, but they are branching out to peaches, too. No peach donuts, but they had some peach butter, as well as cherry butter, etc. Lots of fun stuff to look at

When is the Baldwin festival? I might run up there.

The Maple Leaf Festival is October 16th and 17th, the third full weekend in October. Baldwin is always beautiful with the maple trees, and of course, there are plenty of arts and crafts to go around!

Kansaseq, If you like cherries you ought to try their cherry butter! Oh it's delicious!! I have a friend in home health care and she makes a potty/donut stop there when she's out that way and gets me a jar of cherry butter when I'm about out. I recently opened a new jar. Yum!!

This is my 1st winter w/chickens - & I read somewhere recently that if you use a bucket, a heated dog water bowl, etc., just put a (smaller diamameter) disk of wood (with holes drilled in it) in the water. The smaller wooden disk allows the birds to drink the water around the disk & stops them from either getting in the water or slopping it all over themselves. Sure hope this works...will post again if it does.

Hmmm. That sounds interesting. One book I have shows a cinder block with a lighbulb mounted inside a jar, sitting in the cinder block hole. The bulb heats the block and the waterer that is on top of the cider block does not freeze. Ever heard of this?

Anybody else with chicks out there? These temperature swings are making it difficult for me to control the brooder heat!Geez.
