I curled up in bed last night and never moved.
First for today, I need help. I hatched a little turkey and part of her bowel is outside her rectum. Anyone ever have a situation like that with chicks of any kind? What can I do. I know she will die if I don't get it back in. Just when you think you know what you are doing!!!!
Well chooks you know I never close my coop doors and rarely my pens except for the breeds I have separated. I think that one possum in the chicken house the night you were here was the only case I am sure a predator got in. The dogs just didn't seem to notice it. Weird. Normally they'd pitch a fit. I think it was because Fluff had fallen so in love with you he couldn't think of anything else!

Ivy, The last two winters here is what I've done and I was out in many of those sub zero days last year for up to 2 hours at a time and didn't get cold. I have a couple pairs of those men's pants. I think they are called work out pants. They have the wind proof type outside on them and either mesh or flannel on the inside. I just pull them over the top of my jeans and tuck my shirt in them to make sure my back stays covered. They block the wind and hold in the heat. Amazing! I tend to splash water on my pant legs and they kind of shed the water as well. I wear my muck boots which are the warmest thing I've found. I put a scarf around my head and neck that I can pull up on my face if it is really bitter. Like Chooks I have a pair of neoprene gloves. Mine are called fisherman's gloves. They have the rubber rough texture on the outside so you can get hold of things and then kind of a felt inside. I've had my hands down in ice water and they never get wet and they stay really warm. I even talked my sister into getting a pair to keep in her car in case she would get stuck or something on her way home from work. They are so awesome. I bought a pair of neoprene boots thinking they would work as well but they are too stiff so they aren't comfortable. I'll just stick with the muck boots for the feet. I put on a sweatshirt and a chore coat and have myself pretty much insulated against as low as -50 wind chill. DH gave me my first pair of the pants that he outgrew and got me hooked. Best part is you can buy them at Walmart for around $10 a pair.I have a pair of insulated overalls but they are too stiff and I don't think they work as well as the other pants do.

That gave me a good giggle, too! I often have a hard time keeping up with everything/everyone. Don't worry about it.

Renee and Danz-- I've never seen neoprene gloves before! I want some! Do you suppose Atwoods might have them, or will I have to order them?

Danz-I like the insulated pants you describe. You say I can get them at Wal-Mart. I will have to look. I don't remember seeing them here, so I hope they haven't sold out for the year. I want something I can just pull on over my jeans to go out, like you describe. I've got plenty of gloves, and I manage to keep my feet warm. I've worn out several pair of muck boots. Sure wish those things weren't so expensive! When it's really cold I wear my "DORK" hat. It is actually a rabbit skin/fur hat and nothing I have ever worn is as warm as that. It is a bomber style hat. It earned the name Dork hat from my youngest son when he needed a hat and my DH gave him his hat like this to wear. Poor kid grumbled and growled about looking like a dork, but fell in love with the thing and we ended up buying him a nice rabbit hat of his own.

Danz, thanks for the links on the gloves, I need to get myself some of those. I can never seem to find gloves warm enough to protect my hands & I need some that I can do things with them on & not worry about them getting wet. I'll check those out today. I also have some of those pants you were talking about & they are great for blocking the wind. I'm sorry to hear about your little turkey, I wouldn't have a clue about that one, I hope you can get it some help. How is Marshmallow doing by the way?

Well DH got off this morning to Missouri. He always blames me for leaving late & he couldn't blame me this time since I wasn't even going, ha. He left with 4 dozen eggs for his sisters, first one wanted some & then the other one chimed in. That was all of my extra eggs, so I hope my hens keep laying! He's supposed to go pick up my rabbits for me tomorrow before he leaves to come home, so let's hope that goes all right because he has no clue what he's doing. I hope the gal is honest & gives us what we're supposed to be getting because he won't know the difference. Once they get here it will be way too far back if they get anything wrong. I will be getting another stacking cage tomorrow from the guy I bought the outside hutch from, his girlfriend is bringing it to work with her to Winfield so I can pick it up from her. That will save me another trip to Ark City.

Have any of you heard of large puppies getting what is called "knuckling over" of their front legs? My friend has a Great Dane puppy that she had to bottle feed due to the mother dying right after having the pups & she was doing so well at first & now has developed this condition in her front legs. The legs just buckle over & they can't stand right, the front legs won't hold up their weight. These large dogs grow so fast & I guess from what I read it is a condition affecting the growth plates. They have to splint the legs to give them support & they need good nutrition & extra calcium to correct it. Anyway, this was the first time I had heard of it.

I'm still feeling cruddy today, but my nose isn't streaming quite as much as yesterday. Tweety, I think I have the same thing you were describing, it sounds almost identical. I got up this morning & my cough was deeper in my chest, but now I'm not coughing so much as I was, at least right now anyway. I filled a trash can with kleenex yesterday twice, so yeah I can identify with that. I really don't feel like doing much of anything today but sitting around or laying around. I have things I really need to be doing, but I just don't feel up to it. My son is going to be here tonight some time, it will be nice to see him & my granddaughter will be here tomorrow. It's too bad I won't really feel up to par while she's here. I hope she doesn't get what I have, but I have a feeling she may have already have had it because we heard she was sick last week. This crud sure has been going around lately.

I just got an email that our first 4-H show is March 24th in Jefferson County at the Meadowlark Extension District in Oskaloosa (where the heck is that?).

This made me giggle. Oskie (what we call Oskaloosa around here) is about 20 miles north of us (Lawrence). You can take the highway from Wichita to Ottawa and then take hwy 59 straight there. It's a teeny tiny place and I'm shocked that they would hold a 4-H show! I hope all goes well with it!
