Consolidated Kansas

So Loralee have you tried to hand feed this pigeon? Just put some bird seed or even chicken feed in your hand and slowly move it toward it. Give it an extra 6 inches or so of space and see if it will come to you. If that spooks it put food and water in the same place every day for it. If it is watching you it will start associating you with good. It sounds like it has been handled before or is at least used to humans. I am sure it recognizes that you will feed and water it. I am a true believer that animals in need can often sense when a person is willing to help.

I'm here. Just haven't had a chance to post anything to the thread yet. I hope to get to know everyone over the coming months. I'm brand new to this & I'm sure I'll have many, many questions so look for many posts in the future. My chicks have been ordered & are due to arrive the end of March. It's good to know there are people close by that I can ask questions of.
This will be fun!

I guess there are a few of us around then. A new poster by the name WichitaKidd just joined and I saw his intro in the new members section a week or two ago - haven't seen him on here yet though.

I used to hear a rooster crowing when I was in my backyard a couple of years ago. I haven't heard it in awhile though so I wonder if the neighbor's patience wore thin....

glad you are here. Lots of friendly folks here!

Wow it seems like we are growing by the hour after the new BST FB group! Welcome to all of you joining.
Hawkeye, I guess I missed that you have another pigeon coming around. Are you thinking of encoraging him to stick around? If you could catch me up a little bit I might beable to give you a little help.

Hi David!

I know there are other lurkers out there...speak up! This is the time of year things start to get egg-citing!!

I built an incubator over the weekend. I had it stable and now that I've loaded it up I can't get it back up to temp...so I'm going to add another heating element to it today. Can't let 120 eggs go kaput!!

Danz, I want to smell a puppy head so badly!! I have just a pair of buttons left now...it seems one was objectionable by the chicks it had grown up with and they killed her. Huge surprise. The remaining two are in a big cage by themselves and we're going to make it a terrarium. The male is red and blue and the female is a laced lavender looking color.

I have chicks coming out my ears. I have been hatching like mad trying to replace stock that was lost over the summer by the farm help at the land I rented before this. I'll be choosing my keepers from the juveniles soon and the rest will be for sale, so if you are looking for Silkies, Marans, or frizzled Cochins, keep an eye out on my signature.

Ta!

Well, if you remember I had that pigeon that was floundering in my yard last week when it had froze for 3 days in a row. I picked him up and brought him in. He was frozen like ice. I wrapped him in a towel and heated him up and gave him water. (he drank and drank and drank..) Someone that is good with pigeons told me that was a bad thing-- that I probably foundered him. He died soon after. ANYWAY... The very next day I noticed this pigeon sitting on my pergola out back. I was thinking-- OH GREAT! Another soon-to-be-dead pigeon. So, I watched it but kept away from it. It kept sitting in a spot where it could watch me thru the window. Either it sat near the living room window (during the day) or it moves to my bedroom window-- at night. I've been out to talk to it, but it doesn't talk back. It just stares at me. I figured if I could get it to talk back to me, then I'd be making some progress. But it's not scared of us-- it sticks around even when the kids are playing basketball and it sits near enough to watch. I haven't tried to pick it up. One of the guys i know said they could be disease ridden, and I can't be sure how the first pigeon died. So I'm more leary. But I do feel bad. I think it's eating feed out of Seymore's feeder (turkey). Her feeder is by my rose bushes and I have water out there too. I've noticed the pigeon goes and sits next to my coop and chickens, too. She's just checking things out and looking it all over. But I'm wondering if the pigeon that froze/died was her friend. Like I've said before-- never have seen pigeons out here before. I'm probably inferring a lot of my own emotion into this bird... but I DO think it's sticking around for a reason!

Awww, sorry about your buttons! Are they still really tiny? So cute that you have a pair!! That was super lucky!! Are they too small to hold? Those seem like they'd be a lot of fun to raise! :) Hope you get your incubator up to temperature! Scary! I'd be freaking out on 120 eggs!

Welcome David! It's especially nice to see another guy here. Our men aren't usually as chatty as the gals. Humm! That seems to be true in life too!
We'll be glad to give advise and ideas to help you out. I highly recommend a book, Success with Baby Chicks by Robert Plamondon if you are a reader.
It gives a good broad start to a lot of things if you aren't real sure what to ask. But you are welcome to come here for all kinds of advice and discussions.
So do you have your chicken house built or planned yet? How many birds are you starting out with?
Chooks it is getting closer to spring so maybe the other bird was a male and the male was fighting over the female? Mine really haven't been fighters at all, other than one male I have quarantined. He is aggressive and has killed two other birds but he is the only one that acts like that. I've thought he might become hawk food if he doesn't calm down. I had eggs delivered to Daren and Michelle this weekend. Let me know if you need more. Is the female laying? She should have started a long time ago but maybe hasn't had enough light yet. Chances are with the two, if you make a plant cover or a place for the female to hide she will hatch a clutch of eggs on her own. I've never set mine up to do that because there isn't room in their cages. I really wish I had a place where I could just watch them and enjoy them like a big glass aviary or something. There just is no place to do that here.
My puppies need a bath. They smell like their Mom and she smells pretty gamey being outside all the time. I love the normal puppy smell though. It's so fun to watch them wobble around. They are so unsteady on their feet. It seems like this litter is maturing rather slowly compared to the last litter. Maybe it's because it's not summer and I am not spending so much time out there watching their every move.
I'm a hurting unit today. I sure hope I have no need to wrestle and handle birds today. There isn't a joint in my body that isn't screaming! It sucks to be old!
