I wondered since your locale listed Wichita, but I always listed that even when I lived 45 min out, so thought I'd offer.
I thought you all could have up to 6 hens w/o a permit and up to 12 with a permit. Have they changed something?
Our town doesn't have any limits, but you're not allowed complaints from neighbors. I've got 10 roos currently that I know of, 5 slated for the freezer. Only 2 or 3 of those I think might interest anyone.
The black Ameraucana, a black silkie and a cross I think has some neat coloring.
I've seen it addressed two places. The way I understand it is no permit needed at 3, you can get a permit with 4 or 5 and have to have one with 6-12. My home owners association only allows three fowl but they didn't think anyone would interpret that as chickens. One neighbor complained and the HOA came to talk to me. I explained they were domestic pets and confined to my yard. You cannot even see my coop behind my privacy fence. Flight feathers are clipped so the birds cannot get in anyones yard. They make less noise than the dogs in the neighborhood and they don't crap in anyone elses yard like the dogs and cats do. Also they eat pesky bugs in my yard so I don't need harmful pesticides. They then told me okay, we just wanted to make sure you didn't have any roosters.
That was part of the reason why I changed from leghorns to my americanas. Most of my neighbors like my girs and bring their kids and other family over to see them.
