Consolidated Kansas

Ivy - so glad things worked out as they did and you were there. It really is scary how fast disaster can happen.

Trish - so sorry about Rudy. It sounds like you gave him a great life and I'm sure he was happy to have the life he did.

Wow, it is so busy on here. I was gone all day today and came back to quite a few pages to read. DD had reconstructive knee surgery so we were up early to the hospital so that we could check in and wait, and wait and wait some more. Why is it that doctors always think their time is so much more important than anyone else's? We were told to check in 2 hours before the scheduled procedure. I figured that meant they would have time to do paperwork and prep her to start the procedure on time. But no, we checked in and then sat and waited the whole two hours just to be called back to start prepping for surgery. They didn't wheel her away to start the surgery until an hour and a half after the scheduled start time, and then it took longer than expected and then they kept her in recovery for an hour and a half before they would let us see her. Even once we got back to her, they said she needed to sleep some more so we sat with her while she slept for another couple of hours. When she woke up the second time, the first thing she said is she wanted to go home so they checked her out and now she's resting on some heavy duty pain meds. What a day. We're glad she had the surgery as she's been having multiple issues with this knee for several years so we're hopeful she will do better after this but this will be a rough week as she is in more pain than she anticipated.

HeChick- hope things imporve rapidly.... It can be tough.

How is everyone?

Am i on here too much? Don't want to step on toes of old buddies, and I know a newbie member can mess up comfy groups. ???

Ivy, that's scary about your fire in the brooder! Yikes! Glad it wasn't any worse than it was and all the birds were okay. Odd how they weren't chirping... hu. Maybe just too scared!

Trish, so sorry about your little roo. :( Sounds like you gave him a good life, like Danz said. Still... it's really sad.

Pikeman-- hows your bird doing? I hope she's feeling better. If you do give her antibiotics, you might want to think about giving her probiotics too, to counter act the effect of the antibiotics. I use a powder (in a tub I bought at TSC) made for goats... I just sprinkle the little scoop on the top of the feed. If they are having runny poop due to antibiotics, it will help stop it.

Seymore isn't fond of going outside with the snow on the ground. But she is going to be one DEAD turkey if she tries to perch on my car one more time! That ticks me off. And BTW-- my car was INside the garage! Of course.. I had the door open, but I didn't expect her to come back in and "roost" on my car. I got her down and put her back in her pen. Darned bird.

Ivy - OMG, This is my husband's worse fear with me having the light near pine chips. That's why I created the "cage" i did, just incase the lamp fell. I would have been freaking out! I'm sooooo glad you caught it and it wasn't more serious than it was!

Trish - I'm so sorry to hear about Rudy :( I know i'm going to get attached to my birds and I'll bawl the first time I find one has passed. *big hugs*

Hechicken - Glad to hear that your DD made it through the surgery fine! It'll be a long recovery, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, that's for sure!

Marty, Don't even think twice about it! I "jumped in" a couple months ago and have never felt anything but love from the group. You are one of us now.. :)

Thanks Tweetysvoice. How Lawrence today?? I lived thier for 10 years, but had to leave when I inherited a big property near Emporia. I miss Mass street! I miss Zen Zero!

Hey Chickenobsessed- turkeys and peacocks both are so bad about that! Get a car cover, or doors for your garage!!

My moms turkeys and peacocks didn't get along either, so our old tom and the peacock mail would get into knock down feather pulls! Amazing, though, to watch them fly at each other. Neither ever got hurt. Do you pen your turkeys at night?

Marty - Lawrence is good! It got to about 49 today, so the snow pretty much melted away (except for the piles that were shoveled deep). YAY! Not supposed to get under 46 for the next couple weeks, so if that's all the winter we have, then I'm good! I've lived in Lawrence since '91 and don't think that I could ever move away. LOL I'm just glad they allow us to keep 20 chickens in town now! (No roosters). Just passed a law allowed one pot-belly pig too, but right now I have to forgo that dream. LOL

oh wow-- how did I over look your post? So sorry about the long wait this morning for the surgery. I wonder why that is they do that? We've gone to dedicated surgery centers here that do nothing but, and still end up having a bit of a run around. I hope your DD will be feeling much better. I can't imagine that knee surgery would be easy to recover from. I feel really sorry about the pain she is in. :(

I moved their in 92. Wish theyd passed the law then!! Very cool place. Emporia is not bad, and it is a college town, but Lawrence is special. I used to help out at the comunity garden when it was still besdie TheMerc when it was on 9th (but not the tiny place on Rhode Island in the early 90's and before.)

I keep my garage door open a lot-- so the kids can go in and out with their bikes, etc. The turkey likes to slink back in when she thinks we're not looking. But in her defense-- her night-time kennel is in there. I have tried penning her up and it doesn't work. She's a free- range turkey during the day. I had her in a horse stall and put up wire on the top of it and she just learned how to fly straight up into the rafters and then hop rafters until she was free of the horse stall and wire I put up. If I don't catch her early enough in the evening, she will just roost out in the barn, but that worries me. She's not really the smartest bird. She lets the neighbor dog (who is nice) practically maul her. I now go out there and chase the dog off and put her up if I think the dog is coming back. We also have really mean dogs down the road that like to come over, too.

HATE those dogs! I've talked that neighbor about keeping his dogs on his property and he was less than impressed with me. Sigh. In the interest of not starting a fight with him, I've let it go and just make sure everyone is protected as best I can. I have run his dogs down a time or two when I've been out riding on horseback. (insert evil laugh..) But otherwise, I'm not going to shoot them or anything.

My brother lives in Lawrence. He had his law office on Mass up until a few months ago when he moved into a larger building. I've been trying to talk him into chickens. I think he's coming around! He has a BIG backyard-- he could have 20 chickens and not make a dent. But I'm just trying to talk him into something really easy to maintain-- like 4 or 5 chickens for now. Told him I'd build his coop, and bring it up for him, too. (he doesn't have any power tools) He and i think alike-- he's wanting to build a nice big greenhouse, too back there. :) He's only one step away from crazy.... ha!!
