Consolidated Kansas

Thanks Honeycreek, I went ahead and tossed out the eggs this morning. I didnt' see anything in them except for that bloodspot in the one. And I didn't want any problems with bad eggs in there.

Ivy, I did have better results taking the eggs into the hall bathroom where there are no windows.

No problem Tweety! Sell your chicks to your hearts content! :) I'm with Danz- there are some times when it's best when you know you'll be in the "hobby" range to just leave things alone and not mess with taxes for it.

Trish, I sure hope your girls start to lay soon! You've been waiting forever! Think it's our short days? My silkies are under lights, which is probably why I'm having no issues with getting eggs...

Tweety-Leaving the stump is a good idea. Roosters love to hop up on something to crow.

Sold some chicks today. Thank you for your purchase. Now I can hatch more, but I'm wondering about my sanity. I will be going to the Dr. in Topeka Tues. about getting my knee fixed. Once they do that I will be laid up for a few weeks... a couple at least, and my DH will be saddled with more chores than normal during that time. He's doing better himself, but still isn't 100%. If I knew when the surgery was going to be I would try not to hatch around that time, but I have a feeling I already have eggs in the incubator that will be hatching when I have my surgery. I want to get it done as soon as possible.

I posted on the poultry swap site that I've got chicks for sale. Marans, ameraucanas and golden lakenvelders. If anyone is interested just send me a p.m.

x2!!! :)

congrats on the sale today!

For example, the first year I acquired barnyard mutts from a local gal for a very low price. Last year I bought expensive hatching eggs and incubated them. Believe it or not, that made a difference.

I don't get it.. what was the difference? That the mutts were cheaper and made you more money? And the expensive hatching eggs gave you a loss?? I was following you up until that point and i got lost! ha! But I am curious to know what you meant. :)

Oh, I just meant that the barnyard mixes cost me $1/apiece, whereas the hatching eggs cost a lot more (and I only ended up with one hen from them). The adult hens lay just as well as each other, but in terms of the cost for flock purchases, I ran at a loss by the time I figured in the cost of the hatching eggs to acquire that one new layer.

Good news everyone! I was in the Andover Atwoods this afternoon and they have the bins set up for chick days! I asked one of the employees when they will get chicks and she said "next week". She went on to say that on Monday they will get the PO that tells them exactly what they will be receiving and when. I'm guessing, since they get their chicks from Ideal, that there will be a one-day delay due to President's Day, so next week's chicks will hatch Tuesday and Atwoods will receive them Wednesday or Thursday.

Pikeman - so sorry to hear she is still sick. I must say, those stools do not look normal but I don't have any answers for you. Hopefully someone on here will.

I found the tax information interesting too - thanks Danz and Hawkeye. I guess I must be the weird one because I actually quite like doing taxes. Over the years I've become the family tax person, so I now do 8-10 returns for various family members each season. Just this morning DSD called me to tell me she is mailing her stuff to me. I've done them for her ever since I married her dad so to me its no big deal but this year she asked if she could pay me. I told her "of course not" so instead she is paying me in Chili Mango from Trader Joes. She found out I love that stuff, so she went to the store and bought every bag they have. She said the cashier looked at her funny so she said "its the only form of payment my accountant will accept" which of course made the cashier look at her even more strangely. LOL.

Ivywoods - congrats on the sale. I wish I lived close enough to you for it to be reasonable to come and pick up some of those chicks. I would love to add any or all of those breeds to my flock.

Pikeman, that green could be bile. It doesn't look like she is digesting her food at all if she is eating. Try giving her droppers full of pedialite or something to get some electrolytes back in her, unless she is willing to drink it on her own. I mix pedialite with sugar, water and vitamins to get a bird going. I think she needs some professional attention if you want to save her.
My roo is doing a little better I think but not improving as fast as I'd like. I want that batril to kick in and get him well.
My cat is fighting her medicine and I have the puncture marks on my hand to prove it but she seems to be improving some. I haven't seen her try to pee without success any more.
I took pics of the pups to day and posted them on the Kansas Farm animal Swap page. I'll also post them on my facebook page for those of you who are friends. I don't want to force them on anyone here who has no interest.

Marty1876, that is a strange looking egg, I have never seen one like that before.

Pikeman, that definitely doesn't look normal, is there a Vet you could consult?

IVY, what kind of surgery are you having on your knee? If it's a total knee, you will be out of commission for more than a couple weeks. Plan on going to physical therapy for awhile. Knee surgery is one of the hardest things I have had to go through besides my rotator cuff surgery, that was hard too, but I didn't do well on crutches at all & we have steps in our house. When I got home from surgery I had to sit down & scoot on my butt up to the 2nd floor because that's where my bed is. I just couldn't get comfortable on our couch & I never did really get the hang of the crutches. I knew that if I tried to go up those stairs on them I would end up killing myself falling down. I ended up using a cane after two days because it was much safer for me, even the therapist agreed on that.

Yeah, Hawkeye, I hope my Ameraucana hens start laying soon too. I know it's probably because it's kind of dark where they are. I can't wait until it's warm enough to take some of those tarps off their pen & get them some more light. I have all the electrical outlets coming out of the garage in use for the chicken coop & heated water bowls, so I'm just going to have to wait it out.

We're almost to 100 members on the new Kansas Farm Animal Swap site, we probably will hit that tonight I figure. It's unreal how fast it has grown in one day. If anybody knows someone who would be interested send them on over, the more the better. With the Kansas Poultry Swap site we're getting close to 300 now, that's really amazing too. Pass the word on that one too, it should get really interesting come spring when everybody is hatching.
