Consolidated Kansas

Ivy, I totally missed that about your knee and had to go back a page to read about it after Teresa said something. Since DD is going through recovery right now, having just had her surgery last Tuesday, this is really fresh in mind for us. Like you, DD wanted to get it done ASAP. She is an old pro with crutches having used them many times in the past when she injured the same knee. She had her first physio appt yesterday and he said he wants her off them by the end of next week, and she should start putting some weight on it now (i.e. 3 days post surg). As of tonight (I just came back from helping her do her physio excercises), her knee is still about 3x bigger than normal due to all the swelling and she is still crying in pain from it - and she is a healthy teen who will probably bounce back from it faster than those of us who have a few more decades under our belts. As Teresa said, I would really plan on being out of commission more than a couple of weeks, depending on what surgery you are having. I've heard that ACL, PCL and Meniscus are actually harder to recover from than a total knee replacement but I haven't had any personal experience with any of them.

Hechicken, I had surgery for a torn meniscus last June & it was a really hard one to recover from, but then I'm no spring chicken either, ha. Learning to use crutches at my age didn't work too well. The therapist actually told me they don't even recommend them for people over 40 for that reason. I have never had to use crutches in my life before. I just started using the cane & it worked pretty well. I still don't have full extension of my leg, I lost a little in that surgery. It seems like that happens to me, it did with my rotator cuff surgery too.

Danz, now you know we all love seeing the pics of your puppies! For those who don't, they don't have to look.

Well as I predicted the Farm Animal Swap surpassed 100 members today. I'm glad people are so receptive & that we can have a place to share as with the Poultry Swap also. I'm so happy we have both sites!

Dr. Mendoza at the Emporia Vet Clinic (sort of across from Bluestem) helped me with my chicken last year when she developed laying problems. He euthanized her for me when there wasn't any hope for her. Nice man and a realist.

I think that vets name is Mendoza or something like that. I have some friends that use him for the cockatoo. Does that sound right? I just don't want to drive 40 miles for something minor I can handle here given the right medications. My roo is still pretty congested but acting a little better. He is eating cooked egg and picking at his food, He is actually running around my dining room right now. I opened the cage and he is just wandering around. What do you bet I;ll have some poo to clean up??
Tweety I keep records of all my feed and my sales. Well I did,but have gotten pretty lazy this past year. You can claim a loss as a hobby for a couple years if you are spending more than you make. If you file farm taxes you can depreciate the cost of buildings and equipment, not the actual cost of them. You can't claim the loss of an animal if one dies. You can only show a farming loss for three years. In reality I used it last year to get some tax $$ back but it was a big chore and takes an unreal amount of record keeping. The thing to remember is if you aren't going to eventually show a profit you are probably better off not showing your losses. You certainly don't want to draw attention to yourself unless you just really enjoy audits. If you file a farm income anyway I'd go for it. I have always done my own taxes. I had a tax agency check over mine last year and he said he would have charged me $160 to do what I did. Now I know why I do my own. If I had a really big farm income it would be worth it.
I've got 2 more days before I take any more eggs from the incubator. It sure seems like a long stretch. I'm getting hatch impatient. I'm used to hatching every few days.

Ok so here you have them. Taken earlier today: I just didn't want you all to feel I was trying to peddle them. I actually have all but one sold and have 3 interested parties who haven't committed for sure yet on it. I guess we'll see. The one on the left with the half mask is
the one I am keeping for myself

Dr. Mendoza is our vet for all our animals. First met him a few years ago when he performed emergency surgery on a prized breeding rooster. He is very good, and down to earth, like Sharol said. I recomend him to all birders.

Here is a picture I took of Marshmallow today when she came in to do her daily raid on the catfood bowl. Not a great picture but she just doesn't like cameras. She is slim from feeding all those pups but she is still the world's best livestock guardian and of course my baby. And of course Fluff is my avatar picture.

OMG Danz.. too cute!! I want to roll in that pile of puppies!!

We got the tree cut down and wow.. my back is killing me. Not from watching DH cut down the tree, but from picking up and cutting up all the limbs. LOL.

Too bad I can't have a roo to enjoy that stump! Maybe one of the ladies will step up to the plate and take over as roo. LOL. I've read on here that it can happen!

I'm thinking about using this shelf that's just been sitting outside as the nesting boxes. I'll of course turn it on it's side and add a few more slats to make the bottom solid and give it a lip to keep the shavings in, but what i'm debating now is whether to remove the middle shelves and just make it a community nest box. The shelf itself is 47" tall and 14" deep. I'll probably saw off the top that has the pointy ends no matter which way I go.

He is our vet for 4 dogs and a cat, too. I didn't mean to imply that we went to anyone else. I've been with the clinic for 15 years (since I adopted my first dog) and the people there are wonderful.
