Consolidated Kansas

I am so down and out. My sick roo who was doing wonderful last night, had ventured from his cage and was being followed by me down the hall with a paper towel, just passed away. I was so impressed he seemed so much better. I am about to cry. Now I'm down to one faverolle roo and if something happens to him I'll be in big trouble. I know most people only keep one rooster per breed but I really don't have time to go out and look for an adult gentle good quality rooster. So 5 days of batril and he still didn't make it. It must have been his refusal to eat. Maybe I should have put him back outside. My heart is broken.

Hawkeye earlier you said you had a tarp on your kennel. Mine with the tarp got flipped twice because the wind catches it and literally picks it up. You might have to leave the tarp off.

We had rain all day yesterday and then one major thunderstorm last night. I haven't been out to access the damage this morning. I don't think we got hail but the lightening was right here. It was lierally shaking the house.
HEchicken that's a great idea. I'v'e never thought of doing that but it is really using the old noggin. Of course I've noticed a tendency ( especially for those who can't keep a cell phone off their ear) not to keep their phone charged. I can't count the number of calls I've had when I've just been called that people say, "My battery is about to go dead." My first thought is "Why did you call me to talk about 'nothing' instead of plugging your phone in?"
The guy that I waited for all afternoon yesterday called at 7:45 this morning. I didn't even bother to answer. He can call back after I've had my coffee if he wants to waste another one of my days.
On the bright side I have chicks popping today and one of my new turkeys has hatched! Yippee! Let's hope for some more of those turkeys.

Is that a Midget White that hatched? I would really be interested to get some of those from you at some point in the future if you ever have enough to sell.....

So sorry to hear about your roo - I know how hard you tried to help him get better.

Tweety - sorry about the power outage. I think I would have been inclined to just turn the light switches to the off position and set an alarm on my phone, then go to bed, rather than lose so much sleep!
Oh, don't I wish I could have done that. I did try to sleep on the couch for a bit while it was off and did set the alarm on the phone in case it went out again - but my DH has OCD about his nighttime routines and insisted that he couldn't get ready for bed with just candle light. LOL

I know you tried really hard with him. He must have had that one last burst of life that I see with many of my pets right before they pass. I don't think there is anything else you could have done.

Danz, I'm so sorry about your rooster, I know you tried your best to get him well. I know that hurts, hugs coming your way.

Brahma, that is a beautiful rooster, I agree you will have to come up with a creative name for him since you went through so much to get him.

Hawkeye, I hope you can get your pen back up & there was no major damage to it. They must make those a lot lighter weight than they used to. I have an older dog run that I had to have help even lifting one panel on when I moved it recently, but I have had it for many, many years, I moved it here from Derby.

The storm didn't last very long here & I don't think we got any hail, but it just came in so fast & moved out as fast as it came. It's supposed to be a beautiful day today, I plan to get out & enjoy it.

Nope Hechicken, it is a blue slate turkey. I am still waiting on midget whites to start laying so I can get some eggs. I really want to start a large flock of them if I can. I got blue slate turkey eggs on a secret egg swap for Christmas. They were stuck in the mail for over a week and most of the eggs were broken. I only got one chick that hatched. So I bought some more eggs from the same person and that is what is hatching now. Looks like I only have 4 live embryos. I sure hope they all hatch. My one little turkey (who isn't that little now) is getting bored with the baby chicks.
So the guy that didn't show yesterday called and said he had to go to Ottawa to do some work, dropped his phone in a mud puddle, and picked it up but lost the back off of it and his battery. Didn't notice until he tried to call to say he couldn't come. He showed up this morning. (And I noticed the back of his phone was indeed missing.)
Anyway I sold him some button quail and plan to buy his red golden male pheasant. So now I'll have a male to go with my girls.
I'll just pick it up at Gardner at the auction.
I need to get some bins ready for my new kids hatching today. I'm out of heat lamps holders. I have too many out in the buildings here and there. Wish I knew if it was going to get cold again.

Pepper update: She is still hanging in there. When I let her walk around last night I saw a more solid stool. There is still a lot of water in it though. My neighbor across the street (Vet) is bring home an arsenal to assist in trying to get Pepper back to health. The cool part is that we have an agreement, I give her a dozen eggs a week and she helps buy feed/provide health help.

In other news my Barred Rock - Poppy has all but stopped laying. I have been finding a ton of feathers all over the place. Me thinks she is starting her molt. She is about a year old so she is due for it.

Orschlen in Lawrence has chicks! Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, EE, Brown Leghorns and Buffs. The guy I talked to said he thinks they will get a better selection once chick days starts in a few weeks.

Pikeman <---- This guy right here is tempted to get another chick or two.

Danz - Will you have an Black Copper chicks this season? Just curious.

Ivy has black cooper chicks now, or did have. Have to get ahold of her this evening. Might still be at the Dr.

Wow I wish I had a neighbor like that Pikeman. I only have cuckoo Marans, no black coppers. Sorry
I am happy. I have three turkeys hatch. There may be hope here.

I tried putting my 6 new ducks with my lap duck and he was being really aggressive with them so he is back on my lap again. Aw geez! Now what am I going to do??
Hatching some seramas. You can see there are some more eggs pipped and if you look in the back there are a few standard eggs. Look at the difference in egg size between the Seramas and others.

Congrats on the turkeys and Seramas. I like the blue slate too. Mostly I wanted the MW's because when processing time rolls around, I already have equipment to handle that size bird - the larger breeds would be a whole 'nother ball game. I'd kind of like to keep a breeding pair or trio though so I don't have to start with fresh eggs/chicks every year, so the first birds I get will probably be among the keepers.
