Consolidated Kansas

What about an indoor brooder Tonya? My current coop can't accommodate a brooder either so I have no choice but to brood my chicks inside. Traditionally I've had them in the living room so that I can watch their antics more, but when I hatched Coturnix last year, they ended up in the basement and I think that's where I'm going to brood my chicks this year. I have a view out basement so they get plenty of natural light. I'm thinking I may use my old ferret cage to brood this time instead of the tub I've used in the past. I also have a rat cage I made years ago that has stood empty ever since and that is another option. If you don't have a suitable container and would like to borrow one or the other, let me know. I'm sure we can work something out for you

That's so nice of you! I usually use a big rubbermaid tub in the family room but that won't look very nice for potential buyers. I will ask the realtor tonight and see if he thinks having the chicks in the house will hurt the sell. If not, I may take you up on your offer. Thank You!

Sounds like you have it covered, Ritter! :)

I was at Atwoods this morning in Derby--- there are CHICKS!!!!

The kids had a great time looking them over. They had a bunch of WCB Polish and some silver laced polish, assorted heavies, bantams, silkies, etc, etc... Oh, and lots of ducks. But I don't know what kind of duck. No poults or gunneas came in yet-- they said more are coming.

Just got off the phone with Atwoods in Andover. Their chicks are in too!!!

Well, my day of work only ended up being half a day or less of work. I ended up being gone most of the day and by the time i got started on my coop again-- the groomer called to have me pick her up. So back into town I went. I did get some work on it, though. I got the window fitted and hinged on there, along with the door/ramp. I haven't finished the back or the nest box, though. I guess I may work more on it tonight or tomorrow-- I hope it's going to be nice tomorrow! This site hasn't been working for me today. I'll see if I can post a picture as it stands right now.

Okay-- this is it so far. I STILL haven't gotten the back door on, or got the side nest box put on. I do have the lumber ready for it. (nest box and back door) I'm so tired now, I don't know if I'm done for today or if I'll work on it more. (dealing with the sick kids, and the dog, etc... it's been a LONG day) Anyway-- here the picture shows the window (with out the glass in it for now) and the pop door-- that will drop down to be a ramp. The ramp/pop door will have to sit on a cinder block so it won't be so steep, but it's cool that it's built in! One less thing to worry about if I move it around the yard. OH-- I'm still planning on painting it, but the charm of this rustic look isn't lost on me. I kind of like it as is. But I want it to match the other coop out there. :)

Oh Hawkeye, that's turning out so cute, I love it! You are so good at building these things, I still think you need to go into business building & selling them, you could make some money at it.

I'm trying to psche myself up to get out in the garage & start clearing out a spot for my brooder box. My problem is I just don't know what to do with my son's junk & some of the things that are in there. I have no storage shed any more because it became my coop. I guess it's time to do a major clean-out again. Well I better get out & feed all the animals & get busy, see you all later.

On the run today. Getting ready to leave again. As soon as DH gets home from work, I'm packing up and walking out the door. I guess he decided to go afterall. I hope he doesnt' take forever changing his clothes.
I got nothing done today except chores, cooking and going to town. I really need to quit spending so much time on the computer.
Hawkeye your little hutch is great. You have such a good mind for design.

I wonder if I could keep it up, though. If I only did one every now and then and then sold it as is-- that would work. I wouldn't want to do anything on commisson and then get rooked into doing something really extravagant and not get my time/money out of it. As soon as I'm done with this one, I'm starting one for my brother. I just designed it for him and showed it to him. Works for me, since I know it won't be too bad. His will be more fun, since I'll be using all new lumber and won't have to search forever. I'd start selling your son's stuff and just give him the money from it. I'd give him another warning --of say, two more weeks and then list it all on Craigslist and clear out your space. It's just wasted space, and you know he won't really come back and clear it out... right?

Danz, hope you have fun with your parents and have a good celebration. Sounds like you were pretty darned busy even though you didn't work outside too much. Thanks for the compliment on my hutch! I'm liking it. I got more started on it tonight. I started in on the back door. I just need to get it cut and hang it. THEN... do the nest box and put the floor and roof on. I got the vinyl floor picked up today. I wonder what your baby duck is doing while you're gone?

Question-- someone I know was interested in having chickens, but they live in Derby, Ks. I can not believe what I found -- so I'm wondering if I have come across old information (old link)-- but what I found says you can only have ONE chicken. Hu????! Anyone else know about Derby's laws regarding poultry? I'm not liking Derby much anymore.

Tweety-- I know you already have a game plan for your coop with the greenhouse.. But for the last year, I've been drooling over this cute little "Garden coop" (that's the style). There is a set of instructions with a material list, cuts, etc that you can buy for it. It's soooo gorgeous! I have too many birds to go building something like this, but I can really picture one of these in every backyard in town. What a cute cottage home it would be back there. :) I had thought of trying to build my original coop (that is now built) to look something like this.. but in the end, I just needed something a lot bigger. It could be built bigger, of course. And the run could be extended past the roof line to have a run in the sun, too. http://heatherbullard.typepad.com/heather_bullard_collectio/2010/03/our-chicken-coop.html I'm sure everyone else has already seen this-- but I was showing it to my brother earlier (he lives in Lawrence) and I remembered you were still coming up with plans. :)

OMG! Yes, that is super duper cute!! I love it! I was teasing my DH today that when he retires he better be strong enough build me more coops. LOL (I have 20 more years for THAT to happen though). I'm going to be sure to bookmark that and save that, just in case the greenhouse coop doesn't work! Thanks :)
