Has anyone here ever had to deal with mites/lice on their chickens? Besides being super clean, are there any good products out there to deal with this issue?

Yes, I just recently gave my cockerel a bath-- and THEN only a few days later he was infested with mites! (thinking the bath might have sped up the eggs being hatched) I used Hartz puppy flea, tick and mite powder. Make sure you use the powder on their rears-- where most of the mites are, and then under the wings and around the neck. I then also used the puppy (the smallest dose possible) in the Flea and Tick Drops. I just used a drop on their neck-- be sure to get it all the way down to the flesh and then a drop on their rear--on the flesh. Don't over do it! Everyone says you should really use the Ivermectin-- but I haven't bought it yet and didn't have it on hand. It's also expensive. But it is something I'll be picking up soon. In the mean time, the Hartz from walmart will work fine and kill them. Be sure to really dust them GOOD. I flip their feathers back and dust.

Hi everyone.

I made cakes for my kids for every birthday and designed them to either represent what they were into at the time or a hint toward what they were getting for a gift.

That is a really neat idea about the cake. I know I have the time to do it... but I don't really WANT to. But that is so neat! I bet you'd have made a really great volcano cake!! (that is what my oldest wants) He's getting it... just not made by me. :)

Manna Pro Poultry Protector: The natural enzymes in Poultry Protector clean away these pesky bugs safely, without the use of harsh chemicals found in so many other insect treatment products. Ridding the coop of these pests helps reduce stress and makes your birds more comfortable so they can do what they do best: lay beautiful eggs, grow and flourish.

My question is that it doesn't say you can use it ON the chicken. Just to spray it in the coop to clean it out. Soooo... does it kill on contact, or does it just clean the coop out? I'm confused if this product works ON the chickens...??

Gees. I'm running so behind today.

Candace-LOVE the picks. What a good mentor Xena has there! They look like they are all doing well. I think looking at your pictures has helped me convince my "dog covetous" husband we NEED to get her out of the house and out with the chickens and goats and other dogs.

She has been out some, but not actually living out there yet..

Pikeman-I use Ivomec Eprinex for any parasties. Works for months, but may be expensive to get a bottle. It is actually made for cattle. We use it on our goats and I just "borrow" some from my DH.

Hawkeye-How many eggs did Checoukan send you? Good luck with this hatch. Remember, bantams may hatch a day or so early. You are going to LOVE these little rosecombs. Hers are from some of the best! They are such little aristocrats.

You guys gave me an idea on the vetwrap thing. Next splay legged chick I get I will take detailed pictures. Perhaps I should check out the article writing contest. I could write an educational article about it. Oh, yeah. I need another project!

I don't know how many she is sending! I guess it'll be a fun surprise! I sent her some $$ to cover shipping and I'll be happy with whatever shows up!! :) I know she's trying to hatch them herself, so I wouldn't have felt right asking for very many! ha! But I'm really excited to have something actually HATCH! (not to mention, they are super cute!)

Great idea on the vet wrap tutorial! Go for it!!! That might really win, especially if you have pictures with it!

Thanks everyone on the Arabella comments, she is a good momma and guardian dog. She is 7; she MIGHT give us another litter, but I am not going to ever push her, if it happens next year, it happens, if not, I kept a son of hers as a replacement stud, so I know I will always have her lines....She is also the alpha, and a good alpha....

As far as having more than one, yes, you need more than one, for multiple reasons, some I talk about here.
