Consolidated Kansas

I'm out of time. I'll have to catch up with everyone later. Oh, I forgot to mention, mama in the previous pictures is "Confetti." She is a super sweet nubian. Looks like she is going to milk like a holstien.

BamaProud and wife and dad all just left. Danz, you didn't have to do that! BTW, they told me they were on their way with 2 roosters. That one is a pullet, sister, but I'm sure you knew that!

They are getting settled in their new pen. They seemed pretty scared at first, but I'm sure they will settle in soon, then I will see how they do with the rest of the group.

While they have a heat lamp on, they tend to go around the clock. By about 3 weeks I start turning the lamp off at night so they can adjust to the day/night schedule. The temperature in the house is warm enough that they don't get too cold. Then by about 4 weeks they are outside full-time and by they definitely know when it is night.

I us the Ecoglow, because you save enough in electricity brooding just one group to pay for it, there's no fire hazard, and it's non-light-emitting, so they run on an normal daylight schedule.

Busy morning here this morning.
Meet Blondie, Star and Dottie.

Well I can never seem to do what I plan for a day. So I was out finishing my watering while ago and found a disaster. DH put a desk top, (the big heavy kind that sets on top of file cabinets to make a desk in large offices) on top a ladder platform thing months ago to cover an outside chicken feeder. It worked great and has kept the food dry when it rained. Apparently one of these huge gusts of wind blew it off the platform It even had 2 concrete blocks sitting on top. I found one of my best red cochin hens smashed underneath it and dead. And a brahma hen with a concrete block on top of her from it falling. I took the brahma in and washed her butt. She was really nasty from laying there. I didn't know what to do but vet wrapped both the upper and lower part of one of her legs. I couldn't feel any bones but her joint was tender. I took her back out and put her in a cage with a hen that the roosters had rose too hard and ripped her sides. And now she can't straighten out the other leg. It looks like her back end is bulging. I am sure from the force of the block. The hen that died had an egg pushed out of her. I guess I am going to have to go get the brahma and bring her in to observe her. I gave her a drop of children's ibuprofen. That seems to have helped injured birds in the past with swelling. I'm just not sure she is able to get around good enough to get to feed and water by herself. Makes me want to cry. I can't control the weather but you would have thought if that top stayed there through months of storms today's wind wouldn't have managed to topple it. Why does it always have to be the good birds that get hurt or killed instead of some of these half breed roosters I sell later on anyway?

oops-- just saw my previous post DID post.. This board is acting up on me the last couple of days. I've had lots of double postings all over this board and weird things happening here. I still have a lot of time yet... tempted to go ahead and get the roof on... before it rains. I've been back and forth inside and outside getting stuff done. I chased down a tarp that goes over our BBQ-- I had taken it off and set it on the patio furniture while I was grilling. I went out to put it back on and couldn't find it anywhere! I freaked out and started searching. It was in the neighbors horse pasture. Sheesh. It's home safe-- no rips or tears and back on the grill. This wind is driving me nuts.

Ivy-- what breed did you get from Danz??

Oh NO, Danz!! I agree-- I don't understand why a lesser valued bird could have been under there. So sorry! We are having real problems around here today keeping things in my yard. I've been in and out securing things. Most of them brought into the barn or the garage. I'm SICK of this wind!!! What a fluke about your top/rain cover. So sorry about your girls. :(

Ivy - Those are some of the most adorable babies ever!!!!
