Well dang it. My purple pied white peacock has a cold and is bleeding out his nose. Will it ever end? This is the first peacock I have had that ever got sick. Of course it is the prettiest and the most expensive one I have as well. I am so done with this weather and sick birds.

Danz, that sucks - I'm so sorry. A few weeks ago, I had a couple of cockerels sounding really congested and sneezing a little. I dosed them with VetRx but decided not to take extraordinary measures since they will ultimately be eaten anyway. I just noticed this morning that I haven't heard them sneeze or have difficulty breathing for quite awhile. In other words, they kicked it on their own. It gives me hope for four little guys that are currently doing the same thing. I am treating with VetRx but otherwise, trying to let it run its course. With a mixed flock containing ducks who splash water out every chance they get, it is really hard to medicate. If it were another time of year, I'd separate out the ones who need the meds but as cold as its been getting at night, I really think they need to be with the main flock in order to stay warm. So I'm hoping these four will kick it like the cockerels did. They are eating and drinking and otherwise showing interest in life so don't seem to be really sick - just a little sniffly. I will keep my fingers cross for you that yours kick it also.

Danz, I read about Biggie and I'm so very sorry that he's gone. I'm sure you are feeling his loss strongly and I know how much you love your cats. I can't believe all the sickness and loss you've been dealing with lately. It's just one thing after another and I have been praying that it stops for you. I sure hope your peacock will be okay, I would be scared with blood coming out his nose. I have no idea what to tell you on that one. I know what that sounds like-- so hoping that it isn't.

I have just not caught a break myself. Still sick and I kept my youngest home with me today and didn't drive her to Preschool. No fever, but I can tell she doesn't feel great. Besides, I shouldn't be driving, I can barely stand up with out being over come with dizziness. I did have to drive to the kids' school this morning to pay for the non-funded tuition I have my middle child enrolled in. I barely got there and back. Glad it's all rural highway out here to get there. THEN... I was starting to lay down and the school called me and said that he had a fever and to come pick him up at school. I made it out there again and once the nurse saw ME (and trust me, I look a mess), then she was all high and mighty about sending a sick kid to school. He was NOT sick this morning. Geez. I'm not an idiot! And the other nurse quickly said that she had checked his temp this morning because my son had asked her to. I had no idea my son liked to visit the nurse's office so much. Great. Anyway, I have him here at home, gave him Tylenol, and he's had a snack and some 7UP and he is back to feeling great again and running around. Just what I need when *I* need to be quiet and recover and every time I stand up, I feel like I'm going to black out.

Karen, loved the pictures! Great stuff, I want to get out and some some pics of my birds in the cold. Just can't manage to get out there right now.

MaidenWolf, congrats on the incubator! I know that is exciting stuff right there!

Trish, I hope your marans feels better soon. They sure do eat a lot when they are cooped up, I agree. I need to get out and check water. I just feel like I could faint out there and not be found for a long while! ack.

HeChicken.... I can't quite remember what I was going to say. I am glad that the under dogs fit in nicely with the silkies and silchins. They should be nice and laid back and easy going. Sounds like you have some baby sitting going on there with a couple of your birds. I hope the silkies aren't giving you any more troubles lately. (getting in and out and getting to food)


I really need to get out today at some point and clean/refill water. Sigh. I might wait until my oldest gets home so someone besides kids under 5yrs are here to make sure I don't die out there. har, har.

I'm so far so good on health with the birds. But I can see I'm going to need to clean out the shavings in the silkie pen sometime soon when I am healthier. I sure wish I was okay now, this would be a great day. It looks nice out there. I hope your birds do okay for you!

Hawkeye, so sorry you are still feeling bad today. I was thinking about you this morning, since it has been a few days since you posted and hoped you are starting to recover. It is hard having spirited kids around when you feel lousy yourself. Hopefully when your DH gets home from work he can take the kids and let you rest.

The silkies are doing wonderfully. They have no both learned to navigate the pop door so I don't have to worry about them getting in and out so much. One of them has been making that "I need to lay an egg" sound - not the egg song but that other squawk. No eggs so far, but I'm hoping it won't be long

. I've never seen a silkie egg.

On the bright side of things when I get disgusted with life I tend to work harder. I got all the birds fed and watered then finished up the dog house and pen and got the puppies moved outside. Since then I've been mopping, I guess I won't know if I got the dog smell out of here until I go out and come back in again. The puppies are just getting their eyes open so I do feel better about them being out there. At least they can sort of see to get around. I put carpeting in the bottom of the dog house and put a heat lamp in there. Cloud went right in and laid down to nurse them. Now maybe I can sleep tonight without having to get up 3-4 times to let her in and out.
In the past I've had a couple chickens get a bloody nose when they had colds so that part doesn't concern me so much. I just put some vetRX in the peacocks water and hope it does the trick.Normally that is all I prefer to do but after loosing a couple of expensive birds I'm going through the medication thing at least on the exotics. The rest of the birds other than the one house of special birds and the one peacock haven't had any colds....knock on wood.
I'm still feeling like crap but there were things I had to get done. It makes me feel better just to get up and do things.

Well, with all the talk of sickness I was feeling grateful that my DW DDs and I were fine. My DW got the crud while visiting family in Utah and I started getting it driving back yesterday. hopefully we can get over it soon.
