Dans love the puppies the are growing so fast

Maidenwolf sorry about chicks I hope they pull threw.

I have been letting my younger pullets free range with current flock they are still chasing them & pecking at them. I haven't put the younger ones out in same coop/run yet is there something I can or will they just have to deal with it? I know someone showed a gadget to help with pecking does anyone know what it was called?
They are going to peck at them, they have to put them thru the pecking order. If the younger group is at least the size of your smallest hen then they should be ok. Remember that every time they are taken away and then brought back it is new all over again for the older group. They need to be able to always see them even if they are seperated by fencing. Free ranging is the best way to get them acclimated to one another though because the smaller ones can get away

So cute. They are growing fast.
I know what you mean about craigslist. I get the same thing and it is frustrating.
So I have a brooder full of sick chicks. They have been sneezing and wheezing for a week and been on duramycin since then. They are still sneezing and I am going to lose at least one more today. Should I switch to an antibacterial?
Duramycin is a fairly limited penicillin. If it isn't the right one for the infection they have, it won't do any good. This is why I hesitate to medicate, because I worry that if I try the wrong drug first, it will only make it that much harder to kick it. I had some snuffly birds about 6 weeks ago and treated only with VetRx which seemed to help them get over it. But my little Mille Fleur Silchin wasn't kicking it and that is why I finally broke down and started medicating her this week. I think of Denagard as being better for respiratory stuff and it seemed to help her almost immediately. I don't know if an antibacterial will help that much - I really hesitate to overuse antibacterials. I hope someone else can answer you more definitively.

They are called Pinless Peepers - Hawkeye found them to be great with her Barred Rocks.

I just saw a listing on eBay that has me kind of mad: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281048797367. The description says:

Quote: Unfortunately it ends in 4 hours and someone has already bid $52. I hope the bidder knows what they are doing and isn't taken in by this false and misleading information.

HEChicken-- thank you. I have heard lots of good stuff about denagard. I need to wait until payday to go get different meds. I have no vet rx left and no more essential oils to blend any. I have to wait until next friday to be able to buy anything. I have duramycin and sulmet for meds.

Michelleml those are called pinless peepers. When I introduce new birds if there is a problem I simply put them in a cage with the bigger chickens so they get used to them being around for a few days. Then open the door to the pen. They young ones will come out and the older ones will check out the cage and normally there is no problem. My silly birds are so used to having new introductions they don't pay attention. It helps if your birds have lots of room or are allowed to free range some.
Maidenwolf, Duramycin doesn't seem to help the bird colds that have been occurring this year. I only had luck with denaguard which is pretty darned pricy. Perhaps you could make them a tea with golden seal root and echinacea if you have some. Golden seal by itself would probably work as well. You might have to add a sweetener or something.
All of my birds got over their colds other than a couple that are still sneezing but don't seem distressed at all.
I see Hechicken just posted this same stuff but I am too lazy to delete and choose what to post.
I hope someone is just wanting a bunch of eggs to hatch and not expecting much with that add. I guess most should be good layers but they won't be able to tell male from female. They are paying over $8.50 a dozen for eggs. That is pretty pricey. I guess maybe spring fever is starting to kick in.
Just reminds me how far behind I am right now!!!

IF the seller created the red sex links by breeding RIR"s and delewares, then MAYBE? the chicks could resemble RIR's or delewares. I am not sure how that works.

What I am curious about is how they will be shipped. 6 dozen eggs will weigh a lot. If shipped in one box, the weight will add to the risk of damage to the eggs. The seller may not actually make that much from it. I would rather take a chance with local mutt eggs.

I hear you on the tools. I am strong on "a place for everything and everything in its place" but DH tends to get something out and get distracted and it doesn't get put away. I have a little cordless drill driver that I love because it is good for so many projects and I was really upset a few weeks ago when I needed it and it wasn't in its place - or any other place I looked either - and he was away on a business trip and I couldn't even call him to ask where I should look. I threatened to buy him one of his own if he wouldn't put mine back where it belongs, but that would likely be a waste of money as he would misplace his, then take mine and leave it lying somewhere anyway
big_smile.png
. At the end of the day, I'd rather have him than not have him so I try not to let these little frustrations make me forget how lucky I am to have him but.... sheesh.

We got a little rain this morning - unfortunately I forgot to set up the rain gauge so I don't know how much. I'm sure it wasn't as much as we need but I'll take any at this point.
LOL! Yes, I'd rather keep my man too! What a funny way to put it! My DH and I have a unique relationship-- we do tend to bicker a lot about the little things, BUT then we end up laughing about it. It's a very non-serious form of communication if you want to call it that. My DH is pretty darned stubborn about how he wants things done, but he is usually really organized and puts things away. Seems like *I* may have been rubbing off on him and he's getting a little lax. hehe! I'm not the best at keeping things put away. I always find I am up to my eye balls in things out everywhere again and I run around all day long "cleaning house" which is REALLY putting things back where they all belong. I'm about to do that today! I'm sitting here wasting time looking around at the mess around me. I should have learned years ago to just put things where they belong the FIRST time. Now with the tools-- I'm pretty good at putting them back every single time. Probably because they are expensive and I know if I leave them out, I'm paying for it. I'm really a spend thrift at heart, I have a hard time letting go of the money. But inside the house, I know if I set a bag down near the table instead of in my closet, it's not ever going to cost me any money by "being left out". Sigh.

I would still take my old house over this one a million times over. I love that wonderful old charm. I wish I could build a copy cat of it. I'd be thrilled.
I was glad that I did gut mine in the long run because I unearthed a multitude of wiring nightmares that could have started a fire any day. It made me wonder how it had survived over a century and a half.
Hawkeye I swear if DH put his stuff up he would be surprised at all the tools. He leaves them laying out wherever he uses them. It drives me nuts. I hate to think of all the things he has ruined.
Sounds like you had a beautiful old home! I think it was a good to gut it and put it back to being a single family home. Funny about your DH! I wonder if he really knows what all tools he has or if he "rediscovers" them again! hehe

Well I really appreciate every ones advice on the plaster walls but we have decided to go ahead and repair them.

Yuck, it is raining and very cold out today. I know we need to rain but it is kind of nasty out. My goose pen is already a mucky mess, I am sure this is only going to make it worse. Should have gone and picked up feed yesterday!
Sounds like a great plan and it would be really neat if you could get assistance for fixing it up! I was thank the Lord yesterday for what little rain we had. I just wish we'd get a LOT more. They are starting to talk about the contingency plans now for this coming summer on water restrictions because this drought is really getting bad.

That is weird about the hacking of the credit cards - do you know how they are getting the number so often? I've never had my card numbers hacked. My only issue with a cc was when my whole purse was stolen two years ago. It was several hours before I noticed it was missing and by then they had charged up about $3K on the cards. They did start with small transactions at RedBox to be sure the card was going to go through and then went to Walmart and spent thousands. I had words with the security division of Walmart asking how they were able to get away with it and it turns out it is a Walmart policy NOT to ask to see ID. They did have the thieves on video surveillance footage though so I hope they were apprehended and prosecuted since of course actions like that raise the prices for all of us. I wasn't liable for the charges since I reported it stolen but Chase told me the way it works is they give me my money back and then they go after Walmart (and any other retailer) to recoup their loss. So in the end, it was Walmart that lost the $3K, and they pass those losses along to us in the form of price hikes so in the end we all pay when something like that happens. It makes me really question the self-checkouts, as it would be so easy to use any card at a self-checkout, bypassing any security measures at all.

I finally got the call that my car is ready to be picked up!!! So this afternoon when DD gets out of school she will drive me there and then we will both drive back. I am so excited to finally get my car back - I've really missed it.
I use Chase too-- they told me on the line that people just spend their lives plugging in numbers and when one works, they go with it. So they don't know who's it is, or anything about the person attached to the card. So it's not even like they got my number off of an online transaction-- it's all just a fluke of being able to hit upon the right numbers. Or so they told me. I shrug my shoulders, I have no idea! I'm just glad they are able to catch it. That was a real awful story about your card being stolen! I think they should be checking our cards and asking for ID. A lot of places do that now! I appreciate it and I don't find it to be a hassle at all. Hope you're able to get your car!

Just thought we needed an "AWWW picture"
Very cute picture!! And WELCOME to the thread! I was waiting to see if you'd check in again to welcome you! :)

Glad you're here!

I hope you all don' t mind if I post this here. This is a flier for the fund raiser they are having for my son's girlfriend Dana I have told you about. She is currently fighting a very aggressive cancer. She is only 34 years old & they need financial help with treatment. I just found out about this today myself. We will be attending that day, but even if you can't attend & would consider a donation that would be great. Any donations can be sent to: Landing Zone

Oh wow Trish, she is just gorgeous. She's soooo young-- I'm only a couple years older and I can't imagine fighting for my life right now. What a beautiful girl and it just seems so unfair for her. Midwest City is where my DH and I were eye balling for potential homes (of course out in the country) if we had to move down there. It was so close to the AFB. Is there any hope she might beat the cancer? Have they gone to the big cancer centers down in TX for other options?

I'm sorry she isn't doing better Trish. I took some pictures of the puppies yesterday. They got their first taste of food. They were hungry and Cloud was out chasing ghosts.

I have a super busy day ahead. I got nothing done I planned yesterday thanks to it drizzling or sprinkling all day. We only got maybe a 1/4 inch of rain out of a whole day of it. I have to bake pies and do some other cooking for my Christmas get together with the kids tomorrow. I need to take eggs to town and also meet with my insurance agent to pick up the check and sign over the title to the car.
I spent a bunch of time yesterday cleaning out a closet. Unfortunately that is the way way I clean I start with something inobvious and never get the big picture done.
I really need to make a run to Springhill but I just don't see I'll have the time. I am sure I have tons of wet feed to dump and replenish. I do wish my birds all liked eating inside rather than outside.
I am so disgusted. I have answered about 10 adds on craigslist either by text or by email and haven't had a single person reply back. Why on earth do they put adds in if they are going to ignore inquiries??
I used to check craigslist every day but rarely do any more for just that reason.
CUTE, CUTE, CUTE!!!! HA!! I do that too!! I'll go work on a closet or something and purge. So the rest of the house stays a disaster.... BUT I can point out to my DH that the closet is decluttered and looks fabulous. UNfortunately, it usually takes me ALL DAY to do something like that. And yeah, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't seem like much, but if you are purging, it really is!!! It counts! Because I can usually breathe a big sigh of relief that I have 5 more bags 'o crap to take to Goodwill! ha!

So cute. They are growing fast.

I would switch off the duramycin, I've never had good luck with it, which is why I bought the Denagard last year. I bought mine at QC Supply. You can also buy the powder OxyTet (or some version of tetracycline-- maybe even Tetroxy) and I've had better luck with it. I think it's about $9.00 at the farm store for a bag of it. If you are going to use antibiotics, just remember to add in your probiotic powder and top dress your feed to keep them from having runny poo. This is what the probiotic I use-- I got it at TSC and it's meant for goats, but works GREAT for chickens over their food. You can put it in their water, but I wouldn't mix it with the antibiotic. I think I paid $11 for this bottle and it is going to last a loooong time.

Everyone already told you, but I use Pinless Peepers. I have 2 really mean barred rocks and they would NOT stop picking on my Polish girls. They grew up with them in the brooder! They were raised together and they just turned on those poor Polish. Anyway, the Polish had all their tails and some of their crests plucked out and I'd had enough. I bought the Pinless Peepers and it fixed every body right up! Easy to put on! You just spread them open a bit with your fingers and "snap" them on the nostrils. (they don't really have a snap, just pressure). My girls have been wearing their Peepers for over a year now with NO issues. :) I'd recommend them!!!

If any one is interested in getting some Silver Laced Wyandottes chicks let me know I will be hatching a lot this spring. I am located by Canton Kansas.
Very cool! I don't need any, but do you show your Wyandottes? If they are exhibition quality birds, I will keep you in mind for a source! I am the new Community Leader for our 4-H club and I'm going to be giving a demonstration on showing poultry for the county soon and try to get it thru the parents/kids heads NOT to bring hatchery quality birds to our shows.

Last year, we had so many upset parents when their birds were disqualified or judged harshly because they didn't meet Standard. I actually have a couple of hatchery quality SLWyandottes that I ordered for my layer group, and while I love them, they look nothing like the exhibition birds I see at the shows! Nice to see you on here! If you don't have a group to hang out with, I would recommend you stick around and join the thread!
big_smile.png

That's just the thing. The chicks might resemble either parent but will not BE that breed.
oh yikes, that sounds like a big mess! Don't you wonder what people are thinking when they try to pass off things as legit like that? Sheesh. The listing didn't make any sense at all as I was reading it. So what they SHOULD have written was-- barn yard mutts out of "______" X "______" parentstock and fill in the blanks.

You always give me so much to comment on in your posts!

I hope it didn't seem like I was criticizing. I read a real tear-jerker years ago about an old woman who had spent several decades lying awake at night, unable to sleep because of her husband's snoring. You can imagine how irritated and frustrated she always felt. Then he died, and she realized she would give anything to lie awake listening to him snore one more night. Somehow that is always kind of in the back of my mind, so even though my DH does things that I find irritating, I always wind up reminding myself that I'd rather have him here to be irritated with, than be lonely and wishing for one more day with him. So that is where that comment came from.

That is wild about plugging in numbers to get a valid credit card. But then they'd need to guess the expiration date too. I suppose since most cards are good for only 3 years, there are only 36 potential expiration dates, so if they try it enough times, eventually they hit the right one. But then there is the 3-digit security code. It seems like a lot of time they have to spend guessing in order to get anything for their time - maybe they have a computer program doing it for them, otherwise it doesn't seem like it would be worthwhile.

I did get my car back last night - yay!

Wow - I *just* before reading this, took a saucer of yogurt out to Millie, thinking the probiotics might also help her get over the respiratory symptoms. I had no idea about this recommendation at all - thank you for the explanation.

Trish, I meant to say, I am so sorry about Dana - it is so sad that someone so young is struggling for her life like this. I hope the benefit gets a great turnout.
