Consolidated Kansas

Chickendanz, thank you for posting that link of footprints. It is even better than the one I was looking at.

Trish, glad to hear that the pyr has a home. My pyr was an indoor dog, but in the really cold weather, I used to have a hard time getting him in the house. He thrived on the cold, the rest of the year he was a couch potato with the rest of us or guarding the door. I think my household, three young children, two other dogs and three cats were his "herd" to guard. He was the most awesome dog ever, and the birds and squirrels loved the hair I would leave out for their nests after I brushed him. One day I will have another...

Josie, We used to live in a 100 plus year old house. My husband, who is a carpenter, did replace some of the plaster. What a mess! Even though he sealed the other rooms, dust would get everywhere. We had horse hair plaster. When I lived in that house, I was constantly sick with colds, about 4 times a year. I moved out four years in May, and haven't had a cold since. I really think those walls used to make me sick.

I went down to let the chickens and the ducks out this morning, and there was an orange cat in the trap. He wasn't very happy. We have seen him before, not sure if he is a stray or owned by somebody. We hadn't seen him in a while, so we thought a coyote had gotten him. The trap was a couple feet from the chicken coop, my daughter said the chickens were making some humming noises at the cat.

My husband said this week two days in a row, he saw a coyote in our yard. It walked right by the ducks ( I have seen one do this too ), we think the ducks just make so much noise that it doesn't scares them away. I have four females, and I swear they are louder than the roosters. Hopefully, the chicken coop is stronger enough now for any predators. I did notice the night after my two were taken, there were paw prints in the snow on the roof over the nesting boxes. I have a glass window over that, so it is almost like a coyote was looking into the window.

Hi , thought i would introduce myself.. i am jeannie.. i live 60 miles straight east of wichita. i have started raising silkies, lavendar orpingtons , and americanas. i also have a few mutt chickens who arent laying right now. i started hatching eggs last summer from some well known breeders and i think i have some beautiful chickens.. well i am really not sure but of course i love them. i am trying to study all the good traits they are suppose to have and my daughter in law has been documenting their growth and progress. right now i am hatching some silkies from catdance and lavendar orpingtons from the Hink-JC lines.. hopefully they will hatch and turn out well. Looking forward to reading all about everyone here on this thread and maybe even meeting some of you in the future..

Hi jeaniec, welcome to the thread!

How cold was it when you had the catdance eggs shipped? I tried her eggs in August, but I think I had them shipped when it was too hot. I had a handful make it to about day 12- 15, but that was it. I am new to all of this too, so I am sure a lot of it was human error too. I am dying to get some her eggs again, but want to wait until it warms up a bit.

jeanniec & kansas-chick, glad to have you here. This is a chatty thread, so just jump in any time, we're always happy to see new people on here.

After having such a busy day yesterday I didn't get much sleep last night, our little dogs woke up early this morning before it was even light out & one of them kept howling wanting out of her crate. I have been trying to discourage them from waking us up so early, but she just wouldn't stop this morning & finally we had to go get them out & then they came back to bed with us. This has happened about every night the last week, it's getting really old. They have always slept in crates since we got them, one is two & the other is going on three, but it seems like they have been getting cold at night even with sweaters on & the door propped open where they are. They'll end up sleeping with us, I know that's what's going to happen. My DH has let them sleep with us when we stay at a hotel & now they think that's where they belong. It's not that they're going to take up much room, one weighs 5 pounds & the other 6.

maidenwolf, congrats on the chicks arriving, yes I would make them give you credit for the ones that died.

Danz, that is probably what I"ll end up doing is using a bucket since right now while it's cold I have to keep the FF in the house. When it gets warmer I will put it in the garage so I don't have the mess in here. Whoever asked me about the size of my plastic container, it is about 40 quarts, so it's twice the size of the bucket & not so tall, so it's much easier to stir the stuff than in a bucket. I guess they were thinking with the buckets you could make the holes in the bottom & drain it, but I think a colander with handles is just as good. What I'm doing now is sitting the colander over the top of my bucket I had first & draining it in there, then I just pour the liquid back into the container. I'll get to see how all the rest of my birds react to it this afternoon. The ones in my main coop devoured theirs this morning, not a drop was left.

cubbysan.. it wasnt cold the days they were shipped .. it was those couple of days when it was around 50 and 60.. hopefully i will get some chicks.. i am so excited to be getting some more and it does break up the winter to be antisapating a hatch

Well all the chickens loved the FF except for the Wheaten Ameraucanas. My turkeys just kind of looked at it & acted like they weren't interested. The guineas as usual acted like it was some kind of alien & none of them would come near the bowls I put in there until I get their feeder put together. They all stood back & discussed it & discussed it until finally one of the peafowl came over & took a bite, then they decided maybe they should check it out. They are the goofiest birds I have ever seen! It took probably 20 minutes of them standing back looking over at it & then getting close & going back before some of them would go try it. Once they did they seemed to like it. So I guess overall you could say it was a success for the first day.

Hey,another Kansan here. I live a few hours NW of Wichita.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

We have Rhode Island Reds.

I have the bin with the fermented chick starter in the brooder so I just spoon it out, but I've just been filling a plastic bucket with other Ffeed I have in the house and carry it out.
The bin works so much better for the feed than a bucket. I wish I'd known that before I bought the buckets. But I can always use the buckets for other stuff.
Here is a link I found on tracks. Hope it helps. http://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/common-plants-and-animals/mammals/animal-tracks
Mammahen I would so love to find whole fresh milk. I used to buy all of my milk that way and make my own butter and great ice cream etc. I sure wish I could find someone near here to sell me milk. There is nothing nicer. I used to skim off extra cream for what I needed and the milk still had a lot more cream and body than the store bought stuff.
Be sure to call Ideal and they will credit you for the dead chicks. If you have some chick saver to use in their water it really does help with shipped chicks.
They are slightly larger but sooooo much prettier. They have quirky little personalities. I love them!

Really? I didn't know this about the geese. You really should share more info. I am totally dumb about these wonderful creatures.
Your whole post didn't multi. I sure hope I get some fertile eggs this year. I'm counting on it. If the boys can figure out what to do at least the girl from Trudi should be old enough. I want babies!!!
I have vi-tal I am going to use. Everyone else is lively and chirping. Eating and drinking and pooping. They are picking and pecking on each other so I need to find things for them to do. I am going to bring some straw in for them. I want it to warm up first.

maidenwolf---so excited for you! Cant wait to see babies.

Jeanniec and Kansas Chick--Glad you are here :)

Question for the 4 H supporters on here, is there a particular breed that kids tend to go for as far as their fair birds?

Welcome to our humble group. We love new people and we all love pictures. Do you do any hatching? I might be interested in trading some eggs later if you like. I have some Priscilla Middleton birds. I do have white hinkcj Orpingtons I got from her this fall. They are still too young to breed.
I also have lemon cuckoos from Pricilla Middleton lines. I am always looking for good blood lines to keep from inbreeding and to breed for good traits. I don't like keeping a rooster too long.

I don't do 4H but I sell to kids who do. Most of the kids like the fancy birds. Things with Top Knots like a polish or something, and things with unique or fancy feathers like a cochin, turken, d'uccles. But there are always those looking for a simple barred rock or a leghorn.
Most of the ones that come to me are looking for something more unusual.
Well I had another day of running today. I got in just about dark. I went to town to deliver eggs hen went to my Dad's. I had his replacement Christmas gift with me. It was a deck bench I ordered for him to set on his patio. Looks like a fancy patio seat but has storage under the seat. He needed a place to store things like his battery charger since he is living in an assisted living home now. He didn't want to leave it sitting out where people would see it and steal it.
It took forever to put together. The dumb directions had drawn the picture backward so the piece that was supposed to go on the sides wouldn't fit. How long we both battled to make it work. Finally I realized they had drawn the pieces going the wrong direction on the drawing. Made all the difference in the world.
I had typed up some beginners notes for the computer. My Mom had been the one to use the internet before she passed. He decided he wanted to learn so I set him up an email address and tried to write instructions to use it all.
I programmed his computer so his email would direct load on to his computer and he wouldn't have to go to the website to read email. It is a lot more efficient that way. Of course the protocals were set all wrong in the computer so I had to go back in and change all the server settings and docks and stuff. It had been so long since the computer was used I had to download some updates that took forever before I could make it work. I finally got all the settings right and did a couple of test emails to make sure it was sending and receiving. So when he sets down there he should be all set. I'll have to write out more instructions for later once he gets the hang of the basic things. My dad is extremely smart but is intimidated by the computer. I kept telling him he couldn't hurt it. I guess starting on a computer at age 90 is like teaching an old dog new tricks.
So that was a 2 and half hour stop in my day. I had to get back home and finish feeding and watering. Another day shot without getting any house cleaning done or getting my new pen set up for the grow out pen!
I got stopped for speeding. Man I was sweating bullets. And of course I haven't put my insurance card in my old car I am driving since I totalled the other one. I guess he went and did a record check and figured out I haven't got a driving record and that I was telling the truth about totalling the car recently, so he didn't write me a ticket. I had my check book out and was ready to sign the line that said I pled guilty. Whoo! What a break!!! I was just thinking about other things and didn't realize how fast I was going until I saw him. I just pulled over and waited for him. I knew he was going to stop me. He had to turn around so I was just waiting for him.
I think I need to say an extra prayer of thanks!
