I plan to cook it for a couple days then start feeding it to the geese and peacocks. It should be really good for them. Maybe it will make the geese smart enough to figure out how to lay fertile eggs this year for me!!!

Who was it that was talking about thiamine defficiency in chicks? I just read that there is a drug called amprollium in medicated chick starter. I didn't read this on any official study, but I think it was from a link that Trish posted, not the same page but from the same site. I think it was Trish. I've appreciated the link btw, it has a lot of good information and food for thought to say the least. The link is here...

I guess this drug is supposedly to inhibit the growth of cocci, but it does it by causing thiamine defficienty. I always thought of cocci as bacteria but this talks about protazoa and I'm a bit confused but trying to comprehend. I'm not sure what a good alternative would be to medicated chick starter would be. I haven't read that far yet, I hope there are some good conclusions.

You can supplement the feed. I will always use medicated chick starter-- seeing how birds are effected by cocci is sad. It's preventable and even though you are using medicated feed, you can STILL get cocci by having younger birds out with older birds and them getting into the poop. Having Corrid on hand would be another avenue if you don't want to feed medicated. It would be a must to have it on hand, because you will have birds come down with it eventually. I have a couple of things that you can use to boost your birds. The probiotic powder I bought at TSC has a list of vitamins in it-- and niacin and thiamine is in it. You can also buy a vitamin supplement-- I think Nutri Drench is one, but I've seen vitamin packets that you dose out, and I don't remember the name on it. My Atwoods carries it. I really prefer the probiotic powder I bought-- it has everything in it (including Vit E) and it's easy to top dress and then they get a boost of vitamins plus the probiotics. Win-win. I've taken my little tub of powder to all of my shows and I mix up their water with the probiotics/vitamins while they are there. Keeps them on track since it is a stressful situation for them.

Checoukan and I saw a few birds that had cocci at the last show. Young birds and they were a MESS. They looked bad. Fluffed up, runny poo going down their rears. I don't know why they weren't asked to leave. It can kill them pretty fast.

Don't you love this color? I have mille fleur cochins and they are still a project so their color has some work but they are cutie pies. I have mine cochins in with my orps right now for winter. In fact I went out last night to dose everyone with ivermectin and one of my cochin hens was jammed in between two orp hens and she was so snuggled in there I couldn't even see her until I parted the fluff! I bet she had a nice, toasty place to sleep.
I have never had d'uccles but I have heard they are very friendly little birds. I LOVE my bantam cochins, they are the sweetest little things. Very much pets, love to be held and fussed over, especially if you hand raise them. I have a few buff cochin girls in the garage that I need to find a home for that the friendliest little things because they have been in a cage and handled.

I actually got quite a bit done today for a change. I got everyone's feed and water filled, went to the feed store, cleaned part of the house, moved Lucie out to the garage, went to the dump and dropped of recycling. Phew!

I am losing multi posts. I remember hitting a quote on Hawkeyes latest post but it isn't here? Is that happening to anyone else?

That is great that you got to the dump and got all your stuff taken care of! We are going to work on the horse barn this Spring and put a ton of stuff on Craigs List or take it to the dump. My father in law has brought over a ton of crap-- he has brought over bicycles (and most of them need work) and just things. We have held on to it and I don't even know why we did. It needs to GO. That barn used to be so clean. And it will be again! LOL I'm determined to get everything out that is not horse related. We actually hired "Two men And a Truck" to come out last summer and take a TON of stuff to the dump. I had an old horse round feeder that was rusting out and was tired of looking at it. We used it until the end, but it was no fun opening it up when the bottom was trying to fall off. And we don't need two round feeders anymore with just 3 horses. We used to have 7, and then it was necessary. It was fun filling up that big dump truck full of stuff and seeing it go!

Everybody sounds really busy. Danz I am glad you finally got your trailer done and birds moved. I need to get the ones in the grow out pen moved over to the coop. They are 3 months old and ready to move. These are the phoenix/brahma crosses from you when I got the cochin. This morning as I was going to let the birds out I heard a rough, gargly, sad little attempt at a crow coming from that pen. They are growing fast and beautiful.

I called Ideal poultry about the dead chicks and they are reshipping. They go out on wednesday. They are going to add standard males for warmth. I do not see any standard sized males in the order that came last week so I am guessing they sent 35 bantams.

Mammahen I put some regular bread yeast in my first batch of FF along with the ACV. When I go to the Swedish flower hen building instead of smelling like poop it smells like fresh baked bread! Seriously. Of course I have a super sensitive nose but that is what I smell in there.
So since no one who has been eating this has died or anything I think the idea of fermenting brewers yeast in the Sabastopols food is a win win. My only question I haven't answered in my mind is whether to add ACV as well. The only reason I wonder is would the mix mold without that ACV? If you are using just yeast and it is working okay I won't worry about it. Please let me know.
Josie, I've been having heart to heart talks with the goosies on a daily basis. I told them how much work the FF was going to be for me and how much it would mean to me to have babies this year. They yelled their approval and ran around acting silly so I figured that meant that they would try. In goose language I was sure that meant they were in agreement!

Hawkeye I have a huge metal pile. Most of it was from junk that was laying all over this place when I bought it. I have been wanting to get it hauled out of here forever. The problem is I keep digging through it and using this and that to make something. I've been promised forever we'd take it and cash it in but there's always an excuse.
I did sell another old car this past week! Yay! One less rat trap around. There are a couple more out there that DH wants to use to fix up one. It will never happen. I bought one of them and he lost the title to it so I never drove it. Grrr! And he hit a deer with the other one. He was always going to switch out parts and make one good car. He had another older car that he had totalled twice hitting a deer. So I sold the other one, donated the one I had bought to him for parts, and kept the money. It wasn't much but it got one moved. I'm the one that really lost money on the deal.
I guess if I outlive him I'll just sell them all as scrap metal.
Hawkeye I use those same probiotics but I often just put some in the water. They don't seem to mind it at all.
I woudn't feed with non-medicated feed myself. Health conscious people want a guarantee of no chemicals in their birds and want them fed non GMO feed and no antibiotics. It seems dumb to me to take the chance of getting cocci. Plus once you have an outbreak on your property you can count on having more outbreaks. Short of vaccinating every chick on the place I'd rather feed medicated feed and keep Corid on hand for an emergency. I have never had a case of Cocci at least that I know of. I'd like to keep it that way.
Josie I have mille fleurs d'uccle. They are very pretty. In this case the hens are the pretty ones instead of the roosters. You'll have to stop some time and see them before you make the move.

Im glad we have a metal buying place not far from here. I take all my "junk" to them, May not be much, but over time it sure adds up. I save what ever money I get from the scrap yard, and when there is enough, we go out to eat at Outback or something like that. Makes it fun, no money really spent out of pocket, and beats hauling and just throwing away money. Junk, scrap is usually brings a good price.

Hawkeye, are you going to go to Vinita ok show. It is limited t 500. It is a bantam only show. I think I am going to go, but, I also think I am going to take some sale birds too. Just to move some birds out, and get ready for the spring chicks. Last year at this time I had babies almost ready to hatch. This year none of the Rosecomb girls are laying

They may have to get really busy next month. So I have babies to show!! Oh, I am going to split my bread mix tomorrow, would you like a start of it, ALONG with the directions? Or anybody else want some Amish sour dough sweet bread starter?

I have a mille fleur d'uccle and just love her. She is tiny and sweet and just so pretty. I have 4 new d'uccle/olandsk mixes. They will be beautiful as well. I will post pics as they grow. My little mille has one mate and he is a golden sebrite. He lets no one mate with her, brings her food and makes nests for her. He is the perfect gentlman and treats her like a princess. I hatched some of their babies and have a few more in the 'bator. I cant wait to see what they look like. Right noe they are all black with a tad bit of gold on the wings and a perky little tail. They are going to be super cute little designer birds. HHMMMM,, seccle? Or d'brite? LOL

Maidenwolf now that they have some size I can see what is what. The white one is brahma and I am guessing crossed with a silver laced Wyandotte. The red one looks red cochin. The boy looks Phoenix, and probably some black cochin mix. I had one hen that was half Phoenix and half black cochin. I'll bet she was the Mom. I have the four other chicks I hatched from the Pheonix Mom who are now starting to go out and eat with the other birds. Two of them are at least part buff cochin. One part brahma, and the other one is colored similar to your rooster. It is the one that doesn't have toes anymore. I had someone here the other day that has chickens that said they had a bird get their toes frost bit and the same thing happened to them so I assume that this poor little chick got her toes frostbit early on. She gets around really well though.
I'm glad they are replacing your chicks.

Maidenwolf I have a little mille fleur roo you can have. He came from champion lines out of Florida. I paid this guy $30 for a dozen eggs and only had 2 develop. He has a tiny bit of a wry tail. Not major but it doesn't stand perfectly straight. He is also very tiny which I love. If you just want a roo for general purposes and not showing he should be fine. He is yours if you want. I don't want to cull him just because he isn't show quality.

Wonderful. The red cochin one has a flat almost none at all as far as a comb goes. So I was thinking brahma in there too


This little guy Is the smallest of all of them. He is starting to get a gold trim around his neck. He has feathered feet and a good sized tail.

Maidenwolf she would be most likely all cochin. The gals have very tiny combs. I would think if she had brahma in her there would be more white. Can you take a picture of her comb up close? I know exactly where the black with red came from. I have a cochin hen and rooster both with those exact markings. They are half black cochin and half partridge cochin. The hen has poor leg feathering which looks like this one inherited.
