Consolidated Kansas

Been reading about the comments on Brinsea's apparent quality control issues with their incubators. Anyone had any issues with their EcoGlow heaters recently? Thinking about getting one to try, but if I'm going to have quality issues with it I may re-think.

David, I just bought two of the EcoGlow heaters & have had one working so far in with my two chicks here in the house, so far it has done great. I haven't even plugged the other one in since I don't need it yet. I know Sunflowerparrot also has one that I borrowed at first till I got mine & she has had it going in with her chicks with no problems. She just ordered another one also. If you watch on FB Brinsea often has coupons you can use. Also, Hawkeye, did you know that we had found out the R-Coms are also made by Brinsea? We kind of found that out by accident, so those seem to be fine since Sunflowerparrot's has been working almost non-stop since she got it & flawlessly.

How cool - we probably wouldn't be far off your path then - we're just a couple miles north of 47, which I assume you'd be taking over to Girard? I haven't even begun to check out the churches/doctors/libraries/etc - all that good stuff. NOT looking forward to all the paperwork either involved in a move, especially now that all kinds of extra documentation are needed for driving licenses. Not an issue for everyone, but I was born in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. My parents were missionaries, and American citizens, so I was a naturalized citizen from birth. But the documentation required to prove that, since I wasn't born on American soil, is extensive. Sigh.... I shouldn't complain. I just hate humbug paperwork, especially when I'll be so so aching to get things done on the new place. Part of life though.

>The farm is south of Girard. We have tenant farmers that work the ground now and the land is all over. But all in the same general location. We mainly have tillable land, but we have some pasture too that we rent out for cattle. But anyway, we get out to check it over a few times a year and if one of the guys farming a location says there is fencing issues or erosion or whatever... we go check it out and get it fixed. Sounds like you're going to have a great location out there in the Fredonia area. They also have a really neat church there on the east side of town.

Hawkeye- thank you for the pics. I will take pics as they age. I cant wait to see what they end up looking like.
I am keeping an eye on the wound and keeping her away from the roosters, darn rowdy boys

David I haven't heard any thing bad about an eco glow yet. I do like the prices and versatility a sweeter heater has though. If I were going to buy one I'd probably go that route myself. Just because it would work better for my situation.

I'll have to check out the sweeter heaters. Thanks Danz.

Thanks Trish. Good to hear you're having some success with them. Don't you have a sweeter heater in one of your coops as well? Was thinking you mentioned you had one (or someone on the forum did). If so, any thoughts on one being better than the other? I'm looking for something to use in my brooder box. With my last flock I had pretty good luck just using a heat lamp with a red bulb. Was able to keep consistent temps & the chicks seemed comfortable. The constant red glow coming from the basement windows though had a couple of the neighbors concerned that the house was on fire. The only thing I'm concerned about with the EcoGlow is the height. Seems like it would only work while the chicks are still pretty small (under 4 weeks). If I'd have to switch back to a heat lamp for heat then I might as well stick with that from the beginning.

David, no it wasn't me that has a sweeter heater. I'm still using my EcoGlow & my chicks are over 4 weeks, I just have it adjusted all the way to the top now & they can still get under it if they get cold, which they do at night. During the day I don't see them under it much at all, they're running around pecking at things & jumping on top of it. It does give them entertainment as well with it being something they can stand on & look out. I have these two in a big stock tank in my house right now because it's too cold out in my regular brooders. I hadn't intended to have any chicks through the winter, but these two captured my heart & I had to keep them. Anyway, I hope that answered your question about using the heater for a longer period of time.

I would like to find a great dual purpose rooster, any suggestions for breeders near North Kansas City? I am trying to increase the meat producing caracteristics of my hatchery hens.. Lots of hawk activity when I let my chickens free range so my choice needs to be wary of predators.

Ocap are you looking for any thing in particular? Something larger maybe to increase size of your offspring?
I will be moving to the North KC area in late April and ordered chicks from Cackle for a June hatch date. I couldn't decide what breed so here is my order:
5 WHITE JERSEY GIANT ST RUN
5 BUFF BRAHMA STRAIGHT RUN
5 SILVER LACED WYANDOTTE STRAIGHT RUN
15 SILKIE SPECIAL BANTAMS
(HATCHERY CHOICE)
5 BLACK AUSTRALORP STRAIGHT RUN
5 BUFF ORPINGTON STRAIGHT RUN

So.... if I am going to try and match breeds then one of the 5 dual purpose breeds that I have ordered. otherwise just about any breed to increase the size of offspring. What breed do you suggest?

I am slowly catching up on reading posts! I have missed this board terribly! Between having traded my phone and given my oldest my 4s iphone and switching to a 5 and having to replace it 2x because it kept freezing, and all possible complications adjusting to a new normal schedule following my dad's recent stroke, sick kids, kids having school issues, car brakes going out.... You get the idea.... I am just majorly behind on anything and everything...... I need a month of no responsibilities just to catch up on the ones I haven't kept up with....

I love reading though and am quietly trying to catch up!!! I am hoping all the sickness I have been reading is long gone!
