Consolidated Kansas

Medawinks I was just thinking of you earlier. I know what you mean about catch up. I have really been depressed lately cause there seems to be no way I can get things done. I have these little chicks for you and you need to bring the kids down to see the puppies. How does next weekend look for you (if it isn't raining or snowing or something that would make it miserable?) The pups are so stinking cute.
I really need a bigger pen for them now that they are getting out and playing. No place to put one right now. I wish I could take a decent picture through the window cause when they are just out there playing they have their little tails curled over their backs and act so tough with each other. They are covered in dirt cause there is zero grass here.
I just ran out and snapped some pictures of my filthy little pups.
Here they are:

I pulled the filthy carpet out of their house and put in a new piece. It shouldn't get so nasty. Muddy maybe but they are going outside to go to the bathroom now. I tried again to count how many boys I have and how many girls but they won't hold still and it's almost impossible to tell some of them apart.
I drained and vacuumed out the duck pond and almost have it full again. At least the ducks will be happy with that. I need to go wash out the vac when it's done and water the bins in the brooder.
I still have to put up some chick food and some dog food and go back and close windows and doors every where. I figured it was a nice enough day to let some air flow through the houses.

I would like to find a great dual purpose rooster, any suggestions for breeders near North Kansas City? I am trying to increase the meat producing caracteristics of my hatchery hens.. Lots of hawk activity when I let my chickens free range so my choice needs to be wary of predators.
It seems like the best overall rooster for watching out for my hens was the RIR rooster I had & he was a pretty big guy. He had to leave however because he got too people aggressive. I do like my BC Marans rooster also, he does a decent job of watching the hens, I haven't yet seen him looking out for predators though. The Orpington roosters are big guys, but so far mine seems pretty laid back & happy to be in 2nd or 3rd rooster position. Maybe someone else will have some other feedback for you, those are just the ones I have had around here. My Speckled Sussex roo is also a pretty good watcher over the hens.

Danz, those puppies are really getting cute!

Went back out and finished up. I clicked a few more pictures. You can click these and the previous ones for larger pics. Here they are. First the dog house. This is 6 x 6 X 4 feet wide. I like it cause I can open the top part of the door and almost walk in without stooping very far. I just took the heater I had in there out but still have a heat lamp just in case.

This is the chicken ghetto. The pen is about 20X 20 other than the front right corner which I angled so I wouldn't have to cut the netting to go around a guy wire on a power pole.

Another view of the side. You can see what I had to deal with power washing the thing. The original thing was silver with a red bottom. Over the years it had been painted white, black and gold. You can see my chicken ramp I made using the equipment hatch on the sides. I like the jaloupy windows. They are perfect for a chicken house.

This is part of the inside. I gutted it. Took out the kitchen, closet, benches, beds etc. The stuff in the middle are the braces I built to hold up the roof. It also is serving as a place to hang the electrical stuff right now. At some point I will build some roosts.

And finally nap time for the kids. They were catching the last bit of sunlight for a nap.

Trish I was hoping you'd see those pictures. Poor dogs are so dirty but by morning they'll be white again.
What a busy day and I didn't get any work done inside.
It's really impossible for me to think about working indoors when the weather is decent. That means the next few days when it is rainy (if it really happens) I'll have to buckle down and get busy.
I'm ready to rest tonight.
I heard from the breeder who I am getting the English BBS Orps from and she isn't going to send them until the 11th. When she does she said she will include a heat pack. They might actually make it here in good shape if the post office doesn't drop kick them.

medawinks, I was out of the loop for awhile too. This time of year is always crazy around here. Everyone is healthy and doing great, finally! Yay for that!

Danz, those puppies are so darn cute, I just want to hug them all, dirty or not!

I had a busy day -- made the Atwood's run, cleaned out the coop, restarted my FF and started a bunch of sprouts for the chickens and us! I really enjoyed hanging out with the birds while cleaning things out.

Danz- the pics are wonderful and the chicken ghetto is wonderful

Danz, that is a really nice dog house, wow! I love the chicken ghetto too, geez whatever works is what I say, it actually looks pretty good inside. I could use one of those, I actually have been thinking of doing something with this topper we have sitting here just for over a pen or something & there is another one that was abandoned next door where nobody lives any more. If someone hadn't totally stripped the travel trailer over there I could have used it, but people came & just stripped all the siding & windows off of it & the mobile home that was there, now it's just junk. I did tell my DH to go drag the topper over & we could use it for something.

That is quite a pile of pups there. When do you have to take them all & get their shots?

Hi hope everyone had a nice and productive day today since the weather decided to play nice.

We got all the coops nice and clean and my sister was able to get the stove and venting pipes added to the new greenhouse. Now just vent fans and then the fun playing with plants part-Yeah!

Maidenwolf--glad to hear great expectations for your current incubator group. I candled a few from mine last night and unfortunately doesnt look to promising--shipped eggs and cold weather darn it. But no smellers or weepers yet so still hoping for some.

I dont remember who asked about the Eco glow , but i have good luck with ours, you can prop it up on bricks or blocks as they keep growing.

Danz puppy love love love!

Trish, I wish i would have thought to take pics today, Sven the rooster looked so good today-his own breeding pen with the 2 girls, he was really gleaming!

It wasn't quite as warm here today as I had thought it was supposed to be, the wind was cold & it was cloudy. I'm hoping tomorrow is better because I want to go out & work some more on the inside of my coop.

I'll bet that Sven was just in heaven if he had his own pen & harem in there. His brother is still here waiting on the guy that says he wants him, but hasn't found the time to come get him. I'm starting to get a little aggravated at him. He keeps telling me he wants him for sure, but them hems & haws about coming, heck Derby isn't that far away from here. If I was going that way I would take him up to him, but I haven't felt like driving up there as of yet anyway.
