Consolidated Kansas

Oh Trish I wish I'd read your post before dark. We made an awesome little coop using a camper topper. In fact we are looking for more of them on the cheap so we can make some more little houses. At first I had it sitting on saw horses and strung netting scraps around the bottom to enclose it. That was warm weather. Then I put straw bales around the outside to cut the wind. Finally we made premade sides, screwed them together and just set the camper on top. It really doesn't look bad at all. Of course it has no floor but that would be easy to do if we wanted. I just cut a few 2X 4's the width of the shell and laid them on the inside ridge across it so the chickens have roosts.
I'll try to remember to get some pictures tomorrow if I don't forget. I have a group of chickens that sleep in there and Marshmallow goes in there to take naps or get out of the weather as well. Of course on cold days we have the dog and chickens both snuggled together.
This chicken ghetto had huge open gaps along the bottom because the bottom outside boards were rotted out. That is what took so long getting it ready. We put new pieces of OSB along the bottom and up the wall a few inches to close it all in and strengthen the walls. I noticed another trailer a distant cousin of mine has sitting on the back of his property. I've been thinking about asking him about it. It is much newer than this one. Maybe 60's -70's. This one was like a 1954 model. I really wanted to get this back down to just the aluminum so it looked more like a streamline but it was a lot harder to get that old paint to come off than I thought. When I bought this one it was full to about 1 foot deep in pack rat nests on the floor and in all the cabinets and every crevice. That's why everything got torn out. It was nasty. I paid $150 for it cause the guy was trying to get money for scrap metal. But my intent all along was to make a chicken house out of it. It is 16 feet long (13 inside) so it has quite a bit of space. If I bought another one in as poor shape I'd probably harvest the windows out of it and use them elsewhere.
It at least is a place to grow the chickens and they have lots of room around it and under it to dig in the dirt.

Well I made it back from the Klondike Derby in one piece. I agree completely on the camping anymore, but the heater helped me make it through the night. The other scout leader think it funny that I need my creature comforts. I have tent fans for summer camping and the best cot and mattress I could find at Cabela's. I got a camping recliner last year for Father's Day. I may try combining the ceiling fan and the heater for the early March Campout.

I came home to only one Duck egg (normally one or two) and four Chicken eggs. Yesterday there were 8 eggs out of the 10 hens. Hopefully tomorrow the count will be back up.

Danz, I think the little chicken trailer looks great. With (or without) a little paint it could become your summer camp for teenage chickens. You just need a sign above the gate that reads "Camp (fill in the blank as my creativity is spent for the day)"

I would like to find a great dual purpose rooster, any suggestions for breeders near North Kansas City? I am trying to increase the meat producing caracteristics of my hatchery hens.. Lots of hawk activity when I let my chickens free range so my choice needs to be wary of predators.
did you look at Kansas Poultry Swap on facebook,

Hello and Greetings..
I wanted to post and say hello and get to know a few of you in Kansas.
I was lucky enough to find a post here that had a reference to-if your from Kansas- on it.. (thanks.. for having that in the tag line... i forgot your name tho.. oops.!)

Its taken me 3 days to finalize my order from hatchery.. because every time i returned hoping to reduce the number of chicks in the order.. it seemed that i would end up with more than i started with.. after looking at the photos here and at the hatchery.. I don't know how i finished the order with under a hundred birds....

today managed to get the order completed from McMurray's before they ran out of some of my wish list.... The below i'll add to my 2 cockerels that i got from Maria Hall's Jersey Giants.

6 Jersey Giant - P
2 Blue Laced Wyandotte - St Run
2 GOLDEN WYANDOTTE St. Run
15 ORNAMENTAL LAYER COLL. Females
2 PHOENIX St. Run
5 SALMON FAVEROLLES St. Run
1 Free Rare Exotic Chick
So.. if my chicken math ( love that.. ) is correct 33 coming early in March to join my 2 roo's..

Thanks for letting me share my excitement.. with you.. and i hope to gather some insight from your experience..

Yuck, poor thing. It is hard to tell from the picture if those dark spots are dried blood or dead tissue. Do you have any idea? Does it smell nasty or just kinda like hamburger? I would try to pluck the feathers that are close to the wound to get plenty of air in around it. Wash it off really well with soap and water and rinse well to get any stuck shavings or loosen any dried bloody crud off. Then leave it alone and watch her. I would not put anything on the wound. Resist the urge to "doctor" it because ointments and salves will actually slow the bodies healing process. I think she will heal up just fine. You may be able to trim the ends of your roosters spurs or even remove them so they don't tear up anyone.

Here is a shot of my phoenixs injury

I really need a bigger pen for them now that they are getting out and playing. No place to put one right now. I wish I could take a decent picture through the window cause when they are just out there playing they have their little tails curled over their backs and act so tough with each other. They are covered in dirt cause there is zero grass here.
I just ran out and snapped some pictures of my filthy little pups.
Here they are:

Ahhhhh!!! I love this one!!! It is so cute.

I pulled the filthy carpet out of their house and put in a new piece. It shouldn't get so nasty. Muddy maybe but they are going outside to go to the bathroom now. I tried again to count how many boys I have and how many girls but they won't hold still and it's almost impossible to tell some of them apart.
I drained and vacuumed out the duck pond and almost have it full again. At least the ducks will be happy with that. I need to go wash out the vac when it's done and water the bins in the brooder.
I still have to put up some chick food and some dog food and go back and close windows and doors every where. I figured it was a nice enough day to let some air flow through the houses.

The chicken ghetto with jalopy windows!!!!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!!! Love it!!!
This is the chicken ghetto. The pen is about 20X 20 other than the front right corner which I angled so I wouldn't have to cut the netting to go around a guy wire on a power pole.

Another view of the side. You can see what I had to deal with power washing the thing. The original thing was silver with a red bottom. Over the years it had been painted white, black and gold. You can see my chicken ramp I made using the equipment hatch on the sides. I like the jaloupy windows. They are perfect for a chicken house.

This is part of the inside. I gutted it. Took out the kitchen, closet, benches, beds etc. The stuff in the middle are the braces I built to hold up the roof. It also is serving as a place to hang the electrical stuff right now. At some point I will build some roosts.

And finally nap time for the kids. They were catching the last bit of sunlight for a nap.
If it was for butcher roosters it would be a riot to call it Freezer camp!!!

Sorry I haven't answered PMs. I promise I will get back to everyone tomorrow. We just got in and are just flat wiped out after unpacking the pod today at the new house.

Josie I'll bet it feels good to have the pod moved. One more step toward the big move!! Did your washer and dryer make it in as scheduled?
If I leave the ghetto where it is I really would like to get the rest of the paint off of it and repaint the graphics so it looked cool again. No reason it has to look so awful other than it's one more project. At any rate it was a lot of work, but for the price and being able to tow it down the road it made a convenient building. Luckily the tires off of DH's boat trailer fit perfectly so that problem was solved. The old tires and wheels had rotted into the ground. The chickens seem to be pretty content in there for now. It holds the heat amazingly well although a lot of the insulation is gone.
Wow! That wind is blowing something insane today. Of course I haven't seen all the predicted rain but that doesn't surprise me.
I really need to keep myself busy inside today regardless of what the weather does. It's supposed to be really warm but I can't let that side track me.

Josie- Thank you, I have already washed with soap and water and plucked some feathers. It cleaned up nicely. There is no bad smell. It kind of smells like rawhide really, but not rotted or rancid. My roos dont have pointed ends on their spurs yet. I am going to double check on it though. I got rid of a couple guys and things have settled down. There is no fighting to mate anymore.

Welcome bbsnooks, It sounds like you will have quite an assortment of chickens there, some nice eye candy. I have the Gold Laced Wyandottes & Salmon Faverolles myself. Jump in any time, we just have an ongoing dialogue here all the time & a little bit of everything.

Josie, that has to be a big relief to get that pod there & unloaded, whew! I'll bet you'll be glad when you can get all moved & start settling into the new place.

Well I'm disappointed that the weather is not as nice as predicted today, so far it's very windy & cloudy here. We're finally going to get to see our granddaughter today, we haven't seen her since the week before Christmas. She was supposed to go to Missouri with us & then that didn't happen since we both got sick. I really was hoping she could go with us so everyone could see her again, it's been years since she's been there.

I've decided to set up my poultry endeavors as a small business this year. Since I hope to put forth efforts to make money to offset feed expense, the IRS is going to view me as a small business anyway. I'm going to get a tax id #, separate checking and the whole nine yards. I think it will help me to focus on my goals and it will be easier to keep DH informed as to where I'm at and where I'm going with the whole thing. I think putting together a little business plan like I used to for my real estate businesses will make it all seem less random for DH and it will keep me more strictly on track with my projects.

Among those of you who are hatching, selling chicks and selling eggs, have you put together a spreadsheet for tax purposes? How do you handle the business-end of it all?

If there is interest, I'll keep you up-to-date as I set up my small business.
