Danz, I forgot to say that I just told the guy wanting people to hatch for him that I would do one batch for him later on in March or April just in trade for the silver laced wyandottes I was wanting from him. That's pretty much what he's doing is having people hatch & letting them have some of the chicks for doing it. That's not a bad deal for people if they're wanting a certain breed of chicks that he has. I just wouldn't do it on a continuing basis. Maybe eventually he'll figure out it's cheaper in the long run to buy his own bigger incubator.

I was surprised my chickens wanted out today, but they were waiting at the door just like every other day. My dogs are a muddy mess today, they were laying right out in the middle of the yard in the rain, silly dogs.

Josie. I have a buff Orpington hen that waits for me to open the brooder house door every day. Then she goes in and lays an egg in the top brooder box. It doesn't matter what time of day it is either. It's like she holds the egg until her spot is available. Silly bird.
I've got to start thinking where I am going to put my new trio of birds. I want to keep them separate so I can breed the right colors. For that much money I don't want to mix them up. I might cross the rooster with a couple of other hens just for fun to see what I get but only on purpose. I might do some AIs. I have a splash brahma that came from the Dan Powell birds which could make something special. This guy Bruce, that raises these birds said once in a while he will create a blue splash Brahma by breeding back two blues from these lines. He said they are gorgeous and are making him rich. I didn't ask what he gets for them.
So next week I have two groups of shipped birds coming in and then the following week the english orp eggs. Time to stop buying chicks again!!
I'll get busy with spring hatching soon and won't have time to think about buying more.

Is it true that you can sex chicks like EE's and other pea comb birds by the tail feathers when they are a few weeks old? I saw that if the tail was long it was a roo and short and squared was a pullet

Trish, thanks for the tip about looking on Amazon for the EcoGlows. Strangely, the 20 is currently $10 cheaper on Amazon than on the Brinsea site and with free shipping that is a super good deal. Unfortunately the 50 is quite a bit more expensive, and that is the one I was planning to get. However the 20 is listed as sold out and you can order it but it won't be shipped until they have it back in stock - hopefully they won't raise the price on it once they have it back in. Now I'm half wondering if I shouldn't get two 20's instead of one 50. That would give me the option to only use one if I have a smaller batch, but use both for larger batches. Hmmm....hard to know what to do.

Does anyone know how much the shipping is from Brinsea? I tried putting one in my cart and going to checkout but I guess they don't show the shipping amount until later in the process and I wasn't ready to take it that far.

Arrgghhhh! Why are chickens so dumb sometimes!!! I just moved a bunch of serama pullets outside yesterday and they have a big metal coop to go into and instead they stand outside in the pouring rain. I had to gather them all up, wash the mud off of them and blow them off with the hair dryer. Needless to say they are all back in the garage under a heat lamp. I hope they are ok. Apparently their common sense hasn't kicked in yet. All my other seramas in the next pen over were all in their coop, nice and dry!

Alot of my birds like the rain. Especially my silly turkeys they will be soaked to the bone and refuse to stay inside..

Josie, I can't believe those silly birds causing you all that extra work for nothing. It's just not easy blow drying a chicken! Even if it is small. It's not raining here but it's cold and windy and I had to shoo little Lucy back into the coop. Bertram has the German NH cockerels on the run and they are big! His little crow just cracks me up and he does it with such dignity.
