Consolidated Kansas

Thanks HeChicken It was your tag line that let me find the Kansas people here..
I've been reading along.. this and a few other posts. things happen fast around here..
When i fiure out some things I'll chime in a bit more .....

?? does any one know if we can "Save a post" there are a few things i would like to keep for future reference.. ( breading info , feed rations and the like).
I went thru several threads and I'll find some great posts. any suggestions here?

about the garden I tried to quote hechicken planning out the garden.. ( i cant figure out the " .." and reply yet.. ) but that is what i'm doing too.. this will be my first year with a "flock" and garden.. I've had single hen's with my garden before. but this spring will add 33.
It seems that i'll be planting alot of the same as you .. thanks to watching the "fat sick and nearly dead" documentary on netflix. I want to grow much of the greens to juice with.. Prices at the store make it worth the effort to plant.. now I'll be doing trial and error.. with chicks and garden.

... I wish i could type like some of you.. but its nice to get to know you .. from all your posts.

Chime in any time, we all just chat about all kinds of things here. I'm not honestly sure how you save a post, maybe someone else can chime in that knows. As far as the garden goes, I think you will have to put up some kind of fence to keep your chickens out or they will destroy it first thing. Mine have totally destroyed any flower beds I had around here. If we put in a garden I plan to put up some of the orange snow fence around it. That's about as cheap as you can find for temporary fencing. I know HEChicken already has her chickens fenced into an area by themselves where they can't destroy things, so that's nice, but mine aren't, they can go where they want.

Well when it rains it pours. No pun intended. My camera battery went dead when I went to take pictures. I can't even download the pictures I took of the puppies until it is charged.
I got a call and my Dad is in the emergency room. His heart isn't good and they are checking him out to see what is going on now. He was having chest pains and not feeling well. I'm on hold for the moment until I find out if they are keeping him or sending him home. I got the little Bredas settled for now but don't have the new brahmas settled.
I talked to Bruce this morning( the guy from Hambrick farms I bought the brahmas from.) He said he had a long conversation with greenfire farms yesterday. They haven't been able to offer the blue gold partridge brahmas because they are having trouble maintaining their breeding. They are getting some birds from Bruce and visa versa so some of my birds brothers and sisters will become some of Greenfire's stock. I think that says a ton for the quality of these birds. He also said later on he could hook me up with a few of the lines he traded Greenfire for so I could have some more diversity in the blood lines. We even discussed hatching some eggs later this spring. He doesn't sell hatching eggs but said he would fix me up later.
My new little Bredas are great. They have huge vulture hocks and seem to be more typey than the earlier ones I got.
I'm still letting the brahmas stay in the house. When I am convince the rain is over I'll move them out to the tractor. I sure wish DH was around to get it moved for me.
Oh man Trish, ticks already? That stinks. BTW have you seen anything on the web cam yet?

The new place is 5 miles east of Fredonia (on 47) . Putting on new siding and shingles on exterior. Putting in an underground greenhouse, so I can grow table greens (and treats for the chickens) year round.
wow.. I'd like to know more about this.. I've seen a few on line.. I dream of a green house just cant figure which one.. would be better? congrats on all your hard work.

It looks like to me your more busy than your dancing chicken. I've been sening healing thoughts for your arm and hand. .. will add your dad to that.
and although i never want it to stop raining where i come from .. i'll make an exception for you and your kin.

That's why I want to get a couple of little goats in the spring if I can to start cleaning some of that area out. We don't have proper fences for goats, but I know a lot of people just tether them out during the day & put them back in a pen at night. That's what I'm planning to do because since the darned county appraiser down the road tore down our fence there isn't one out by the other road down there. He was such a jerk, I don't miss him one bit & I'm sure other people don't either.
I was reading that and started wondering "Do goats get ticks?" Do you put a frontline collar on them like you would for a dog?

I really wish there was a good way to save posts......what I do when I find information I want to save, is highlight it all, including pics, and copy. Then I open a Word document and paste it in. I can then save the Word document with any title I want, and hopefully I pick something that will make it easier to find in the future. I started out with a folder on my hard drive called "Chooks". But as time went on and I save more and more interesting or useful stuff, I wound up having to create sub-folders under that. Now I can sort the information according to its general subject matter: feeding, breeding, incubating, coop/feeder/waterer ideas, and so on.

As for the quotes.....if you are reading and multiple people have said something you want to comment on, hit the "multi" under each post. When you get to the end, hit "reply" and it will create a typing box for you with all of those quotes in there already. If you just want to quote one person's post, hit "quote" under that post and it will immediately jump you to a reply box with just that post quoted.

Ahhh....not so much any more

The fence is still there and I can still keep them in but I usually open it up and let the out in the afternoons. They have got to expect this to the point that I look out the window around 3pm and the entire flock is waiting at the gate to be let out. When I open it, there is a stream of birds running past me to head to their favorite spots. The main reason I fenced them in the first place when we moved here is because DD and DH were tired of all the bird poop on the back deck at our old place. I've solved this by not feeding them ANYTHING at the back door any more. Now I carry it down and throw it inside the fenced area. So with no motivation to wait outside the backdoor, we get very little poop there.

Oh geez, sorry about your Dad - I hope it is just a little angina and he can go home with some Aspirin.

Welcome BBSnooks. If there is anything you forget and want to remember we don't mind posting again. Each time someone new comes on we rehash information. And even some of us old dogs are always learning something new.
Sarajoy I forgot to ask about that as well. What kind of underground greenhouse are you going to have. Please describe or take pictures too.
Thanks Hechicken, my Dad has had heart problems for years and years. I am a bit worried because it is coming up on my Mom's birthday and her birthday was the last time we were all together as a family until the day she passed. I know he is having a very difficult time right now because of that and stress is not good. His health is too poor and the doctor said he wouldn't make it through another heart surgery so what is is what is. I just don't honestly think I could bear loosing him after my other losses this year. So I am praying everything will be okay.

Welcome to the newcomers! Just join right in!

We got a little rain this a.m. -- so happy to see it. Still raining just a bit and boy, is it chilly. Today, I'm painting reinforcement boards and repainting the two pens we're working on and DH is structurally reinforcing the pens and putting the plastic on. I'm going to have to hustle to get all the painting done.

I've been planning what to do about a garden this year also. I think I'm going to confine it to the orchard area since it is well mulched and ready to go and a much smaller area to keep up with than the garden. Between watering the birds, garden, orchard and keeping water in the pond last summer, it's a wonder our pump didn't burn out. We've heavily mulched the garden area and will be letting the chickens have the run of it this year, so it ought to be nicely improved for next year. Surely, by then the drought will have let up?

I better get back to it.

maidenwolf, you might check on the Kansas Poultry Swap on FB, I know someone had silkie chicks, but I don't remember where they were located & I think they had cochins too.

Danz, I'm sorry to hear about your dad, I hope they can get him treated & he will be all right, sending hugs to you.

Well I need to get out & do a few things, I was looking at the weather map & we might still get a tiny bit more rain. I think I'll go work on my roosts inside the new coop, at least I could do that even if it's raining. Oh & I almost forgot, I need to go candle the first bunch of eggs I put in the bator & see what's going on with them, I'm excited!

Karen, it sounds like you're a busy bee too!
